Probably only SRK will really care about this thread. One of Canada's finest band. The lead singer has terminal brain cancer and next Saturday they will perform for the last time It's always sad when you put a band on the back-burner for years and only come back to them when something bad happens My favorite song by them. Also nice performance with Kelly Jones from Sterephonics singing Tragically Hip's Fiddlers Green.

I've seen the Hip close to 20 times, and I'm seeing them again (probably for the last time) on thursday. Still not capable of talking about it without getting a lump in my throat. I went to the same high school as they did (albeit 15 years apart), but still...they're MY band. And this sucks.

Crazy.
I've only seen them a few times. Always an entertaining show.
Funny enough come 8:30 pm tomorrow night Canada is closed. So many viewing parties etc. I can't wait for the CBC to release the number of viewers.

Saw them last night. It was...heartbreaking. Joyful. Powerful. Fun. Wrenching. All of the above. The most emotional concert of my life, and nothing else is even close, even flying halfway across the country to see Beady eye the day of my grandfather's funeral. Glad I went.

Literally the first time i've heard of them. Been reading about it this morning- amazing that they're so big in Canada. So sad

Gord Downie, the lead singer of the Tragically Hip, passed away after an almost 2-year cancer battle. I can't put into words what a profound and sad loss this is for me, and for Canada as a whole. I always joked that to me, the beatles were the best band, oasis was my favourite band, but the hip were my family band (based off the title of one of their songs.) I grew up in the same town as them, went to the same high school (albeit 10 years later), saw them live 20 times (and Gord solo another 5)....they documented this country in a way no one else has, or maybe ever could. He was a one-off.

The other great thing about Gord was that while most bands who toured Canada would only go as far Nova Scotia. Every tour he came all the way out to Newfoundland to see us.
RIP.

My favourite Hip song:
Chased it live for years, until one night in Montreal...."This might be the very first song ever dedicated to Dostoyevsky, but this is for Dostoyevsky. This is Locked. In the trunk. Of a car. (pregnant pause....) He's a prospect for the Canadiens, playing for Peoria....looking to coach, when his playing days are through."
I'm a slow white guy, so when I say I jumped 3 feet in the air, it was probably closer to 3 inches, but still...was I ever excited.

Here's a live version from the opening night at the new hockey arena in their (and my) hometown of Kingston, Ontario. Featuring fat Dan Akroyd (also of that parish) pretending to be elwood blues on harmonica. I was behind the stage at that show and can't even begin to describe how ridiculous that was.
