Inspired a little by the chatter in the 2017 Albums thread, but I was going to start this anyway as I had recently listened too and enjoyed an album for the first time in ages.. The Dears - No Cities LeftOriginally released in 2003, but I think this got a re-release in Europe in 2004, I really loved this album back then. I stuck it on a couple of weeks back for the first time in probably at least five years and still really liked it. It's very cinematic and 'epic' sounding, I thought perhaps the production might grate a little now, but it didn't at all. In fairness, this predates the Arcade Fire debut by at least a year and it's certainly within that area, they are also Canadian and I think they might have been in similar scenes. The singer sounds like a cross between Morrissey and Damon Albarn. I saw them live a few times around the release of this record as well and they were fantastic, I noticed they have a new album out and are playing in TCOTU next week. I might pop along for a nostalgia fest. Anyone else enjoy this record? Dig out an old album and give it a go!

funnily enough i listened to this album for the first time in years over the weekend. it held up pretty well tbh. the opening 4 or 5 songs are really strong. i felt it tailed off slightly in the second half but the singles especially are golden.

Yeah agree with that, it's quite a long album, it's over an hour long and does tail a little in the final third, but the title track is a strong finish.

I saw the thread title and knew Kev would have picked that! I agree with JP, the opening 5 songs are really good (I don't mind the production either) but then it goes downhill really quickly. I'm sure Columbia_rocks_man will be along soon to mention the time we got freebies to see them in Glasgow and they were so dull we fucked off the pub after about 25 minutes.

Im glad you brought that up Rod.
On this topic: Does anyone still listen to the White Stripes? I absolutely loved them 10 years ago but never feel the urge to revisit them. I gave Elephant a go the other day and don't think a lot of it stands up that well. Black Math does remain an absolute banger, however.

The earlier records are still great fun.
I don't listen to them too often but if I want some garage rock that isn't billy childish the they are always a good option

Yeah the garage rock stuff is great but I can't fucking stand the cutesy pish or the overproduced crap he moved on to later. My Doorbell is probably the last great song he wrote.

Get Behind Me Satan is the one I tend to revisit the most, plus some tracks from here and there.
EDIT: Had written Get Behind Me Santa which would be an amazing Christmas record

Of course you would choose their worst album by a mile. When did you become the forum's answer to Piers Morgan, Barny?

It has three good songs on it and they're all piano-based. Your opinion is bad, and you should feel bad. Elephant is their...elephant. And the second one with the weird painter name that I can never remember.

No way! I'm with you on this Barny, it's my favourite of theirs. It's only recently had it's first 'proper' release on vinyl so I listened to it quite recently, sounded better than ever!

Still think white stripes are the best band of the last twenty years. Consistently brilliant from first album til last. I only listened to the first two albums properly a couple of years ago. And they're both bloody essential. I could listen to any one of their albums at any time.
