Have you got one? And if so, tell all.
Naturally got a couple with albums - most notably when I played my (younger) mates SOTSOG after they'd only heard the early classics - being into more melancholic/mellow stuff I watched them sit in silence for most of it. It was that night I truly decided Giants is fucking amazing. Still can't believed it got panned so much. I'd even put it above Definitely Maybe nowadays and that's a fact. Special, special record.
In terms of individual songs though, there's one that really stands out. I met this Spanish girl around 3 years ago through tastebuds.fm and we decided to meet in Liverpool given it was both was a fairly even distance between us. The plan was to explore the city and chat and drink and share a hotel room - the latter meaning we both knew the score despite initial pretense. It was exciting and something I'd never done before - what would be would be and for one night only, especially as she was heading back to Spain soon. She loved Elliott Smith and Cat Power and we were both attracted to each other, thus the fundamentals, right? We had a laugh but in truth her English was relatively poor (no harm in that, obviously, cos my Spanish is atrocious) and for that my attempted northern humour went over her head. So the spark was hard, even frustrating at times, but we had enough of a laugh helped by alcohol and we found unity through music. And she played me this tune:
It's like nothing I remotely like at all but I fucking love it. It's one my favourite songs ever now and gets me pumped like little else. And I love that the unity was in the song itself. We won't see each other again, and it was fun, but always remember - "we are the lo-fi kids".
