How's first pick decided?
I've got an album in mind that I listened to for the first time this morning. Pretty sure at least a couple will like it.
Or is first go a random pick?

Right. Well Mahoney has basically listened to every album in the world so gonna have to go fairly obscure I think. Was gonna select Lil Peep for the selfish reason of just being curious what the soapbox taste-makers think of him, hopefully justifying my love for him... However I decided go for something with a bit more credibility. Autechre are a band i've got really into over the past few years, I think I discovered them by following on from Aphex Twin and that early Warp records vibe. They are a duo from Rochdale (near Manchester) who came about in the early 90's, their early stuff was really beautiful, atmospheric and quite ambient at times but they gradually got rid of the ambient side and changed their sound to really complex mad sounding complex electronica with insane song structures. The record i've chosen is their 3rd album so it's still in that early stage albiet at a crossroads. It was hailed as a masterpiece at the time as it sounds more complete, rounded and flowed better than their first two albums. As a fan of both electronic music and noisy shoegaze, this album with it's gradually unfolding quite psychedelic work outs and weird background soundscapes has had a big effect on me. Enjoy. Autechre - Tri Repetae (1995)

Nice pick, as I know fuck all about that genre (I'd say the closer I've ever get to it is Radiohead tbh). I'm afraid of its length as I tend to switch off with this kind of music...

Nice pick, Stocky. I'm glad you went for something of this ilk, as I know electronica is more your area. I've been delving a little more into this sort of thing over the last few years and Autechre were definitely on the list to listen to.
Had my first listen through this morning and I quite enjoyed it, though wasn't blown away. At 72 mins it's quite a beast and there is obviously a lot to digest, I found myself drifting out in a couple of places, but think it'll take a couple more listens for some of the subtleties to settle in.
A good start.

i'd deffo recommend listening to it in half sized chunks tbh. The songs are fantastic but its one of those albums that you can drift off to a bit so it's better if you split it into 35 min halves.

I've read people describing it as alien or assembly line-like, but I digress. It is definitely the sound of the gears in my brain trying to figure out how to write or pronounce their name. Autrexchsstte

Interesting choice Stox. I've been slowly getting into more techno/house music recently so this was kind of along those lines. Had a few listens now & I dig the sound, I like the blend of ambient meets IDM/Techno. I did make the mistake of listening to it each time in full sittings (yes I know you warned me ) & subsequently have found myself losing interest in parts of the record. I'm still finding my feet with what I like & don't with dance (I use that term loosely), though that glitch sound is something that just doesn't resonate with me very much & unfortunately that runs throughout the majority of the record. I'm a big fan of atmospheric music & this gives off a really cold vibe (I listened to it whilst out in the snow last week which I swear made me feel like I was gonna freeze to death ) though at 72 minutes the record didn't feel varied enough for me to completely lose myself in. It kind of has its own uniform sound & sticks to it for the most part throughout. Right now I'd probably score it a 6.5 A nice choice Stocky & I'm glad I got to hear this. I think for my personal preference I'm gravitating more towards straight forward house music, whether it be deep house or slightly more uplifting ambient variations. Just a reminder, those that have not commented on this record by the 16th run the risk of some very serious AIDS coming their way.

I'm not ready to give a full review of it, but I doubt I'll change my mind very much. Some things I'd like to mention is I don't feel like any of the tracks individually is too long (they could get cut though), but on the whole the record does feel a bit bloated. A problem is all tend to have a similar structure, not ending too far away from the point they started. But I do like the production and it seems quite mindblowing (at least for me) to think it was released on 1995. I'll give some more shots and might also check out what they did before and after this record to have a full rounded image.
