so we have the yearly albums thread to discuss the latest releases but i thought it would be useful to have a decade thread as the end of this year will see us all painstakingly put together our top albums of the decade list and even more painstakingly barny will count them all up and work out the soapy's albums of the decade.
i plan on revisiting some big hitters of the decade throughout the year in preparation for my list and will post thoughts here. there's some big questions to be answered - will foxygen's we are the 21st century ambassadors of peace and magic sound as good to me as it did back in 2013? will the jesus abyss hold up to critical reassessment? and will all the young make my list of the decade?
also discuss any reccommendations here too.
i'm definitley going to give that foxygen album a few spins as i was obsessed by it for a long time when it came out but have been pretty disappointed by them since and not returned to it all that often.

2011-2014 was a pretty bleak time in my journey as a fan of music, I really fell out of love with it and hunting for new stuff. There are only a handful of albums from that period, so i'm looking forward to delving back into that era and looking for stuff.

I'll probably deliver mine a month or two into 2020. There's no way I'll be able to deliver an end of year list and sort this out as well.

I suppose we do at least have a full decade of Soapbox end-of-year lists to look back on for reference. Unless Dan suddenly reappears and deletes the forum again.

started this mission by listening to a couple of my favourites from 2010 earlier. high violet by the national and then before today by ariel pink's haunted graffiti. i'm still a huge fan of the national and often find their albums to be growers. i think i love high violet more now than when it first came out and have listened regularly over the years so it was no surprise. before today by ariel pink i really loved at the time but haven't listened to it a great deal since and dont think hes touched that album since. ive also kinda gone off that sound a little bit so was interested to see if it would still hold up 9 years later. thankfully it did and i had a really good time listening to it, so many hooks and catchy choruses but balanced with just the right amount of weirdness too. have one on me by joanna newsom is what i have down as my current album of the year for 2010 so will give that another listen too sometime soon to see how that has aged.

High Violet is dull as fuck and was the start of The National's decline for me. I heard it for the first time in ages about a month ago and doubt I'll ever bother listening to it again.

For me, it's Trouble Will Find Me onwards I couldn't give a damn about - long and dull records. Huge soft spot for Alligator, Boxer and High Violet still though.

continued listening to some of my 2010 favourites today. have one on me is definitley album of the year for me and will no doubt be high up on my album of the decade list. i gave grinderman 2 a listen too as i realised ive never spent that much time with grinderman compared to the bad seeds lps. its good but its not going to make the album of the decade list, ITS CERTAINLY NO HIGH VIOLET. i also relistened to the gil scott heron album from 2010 as i have properly gotten into him since around then so wondered if i'd like it more nowadays. again its good but not a end of decade threatener. lastly i listened to BEST COAST's debut which im pretty sure i gave my album of the year too back in 2010 and i think even won the soapy album of the year. after being obsessed with them and bands like vivian girls at the beginning of the decade ive barely listened to them since so i was interested to see how this held up. tbh there's plenty of good tunes on it but it's all a bit samey. in a year with releases like have one on me, high violet and before today it should have been nowhere near the top of my list.
oh and im not even going to go near that allo darlin abum from 2010 i loved.

That Best Coast album was always underwhelming. The singles Boyfriend and When I'm With You still stand up, tbh.
Brad: do you rate Sad Songs for Dirty Lovers? For me, it's that, Alligator and Boxer which are their three great LPs.

Best Coast Fuck me they were average. Part of that mediocre American scene of the late 2000s involving indie bands fronted by girls in love with reverb pedals. See also: Vivian Girls. Probably the dullest band I've ever seen. Behind The Dears.

Nah, just think sometimes you champion local bands far worse than those.
Plus Celtic might kick us out of Europa League

Nah, just think sometimes you champion local bands far worse than those. I like to give the occassional shout out to bands barely known outside of Glasgow. Who knows, one forum member might like them. Best Coast on the other hand were promoted by established music media on both sides of the Atlantic. They toured internationally. They weren't some plucky amateurs. So your comparison is shite, frankly.

For me, it's that, Alligator and Boxer which are their three great LPs. This is the undeniable truth. Still do like High Violet a lot though. Sad Songs didn't click til later but is probably my favourite of theirs now. The debut is still rubbish.
