I've decided that, just for a bit of fun, and I guess inspired by lo-fi heroes such Daniel Johnston & GBV, I'm going to distribute some copies of the first EP I did, The Weekend EP, on cassette. I've got a few friends who I think would like a copy and it could make a cool gift. And I can keep a couple of copies for my kids for when they're old enough to appreciate music and art.
I was also thinking of treating it a bit like an art project. The idea would be do about 50 copies of the EP and send them out into the world somehow, perhaps just getting some random addresses or something. In each package, I'd include a personalized note and a link to an Instagram page that I'd setup. I'd ask the recipient to either 1) make post to say they'd received the cassette, linking the Instagram page or 2) if they have no interest in whats going on, to pass the cassette and instructions on to someone who might. If I was to receive something like that, from a total stranger, I'd think it was pretty cool, so maybe there are people out there who would think it's equally as cool. And it'll just be interesting to see how many people get involved.
If anyone has any ideas on this, I'd love to hear. And also, if anyone here fancies a copy, feel free to drop me a PM with a postal address and I'll send one on when I get round to doing all this.

Sounds like an ambitious, fun and cool project tbh. Having said that, I don't think that many people have a cassette player nowadays (thinking about the random instagrammer here, for friends is the own object that has the value of course).

You're probably right tbh. Still, that'll make it that little bit nicer if/when people do hear the cassette. Maybe the tapes will end up on a bit of a journey, being passed around friends until someone finally hears. Or, most likely, they'll end up in the bin are at the bottom of a pile in a drawer or cupboard somewhere.

would love a copy Tux, The Weekend EP is a yellow peril classic. I agree with Barny's sentiments, though I dunno, could be a cool idea.
Had thought in the past about making up tapes myself, basically just 1 for each record I've done, but it seemed too much work plus I'm thick & don't know how you'd go about cutting a tape to the correct length you need.

Though the problem being as Barny said, people don't have Cassette players any longer, there's still something very personal about them. CD's just feel so disposable as objects.
I have an incredible collection of Cassettes - Shit Horse, Dry Cleaning & Cigs & alcohol, would love to add the Weekend EP to this exclusive club.

I suppose part of the appeal is seeing if people would actually be responsive at all. Maybe instead of randomly sending it to people, there'd be a way to target people. Perhaps sending copies to local record shops to give out for free or something.

That's the exciting aspect of it, as long as you don't push your hopes too high. But at the very least it can be quite interesting to see how people react to it.

Maybe leave them in public places and include a note to share once found on social media using whatever hashtag
anyway. make some tapes so you can explain to me how easy or how much of a ball ache it is

You just need a tape player with a line in jack and 3.5mm male to male cable. Connect your computer to the tape player, put the tape in, hit record, play the music from your PC. As long the music is coming from the PC, you can record anything (YouTube, Spotify)

yeah but I'd want the tape to end with no dead space so I'd have to get into splicing and all that bollox

I really like the concept Tux. Could maybe try and send them to public places, like libraries or student unions, random local newspapers, small local businesses, vegan cafes and some record shops etc.. Like the idea that it’d be more interesting to see just see if you were to get any traction.

I think if you did it maybe to keep it mysterious, like no artist name just a hashtag or something. Harmony Korine almost did this idea by making a film called Trash Humpers, he was gonna just leave 100s of tapes around LA but he was worried about the copywrite so chickened out.
