No, not asking for a list. I mean which artist or artists, old or new, have you been obsessing most about this year?
i've been listening to a lot of ambient stuff this year, dunno why it's really clicked with me. maybe because it's been handy soothing and/or reconfiguring a sometimes parlous state of mind. but Brian Eno and Aphex Twin have been played a whole shitload this year. the expanded version of Apollo this year came at just the right time (and was instrumental in dropping the era of beef with rolli
) as I was getting bang into Eno just a bit earlier so Apollo pushed it onto another level.
As for Aphex Twin, I've always been a big fan but seeing him in Mexico in April made something in me shift profoundly. I maintain that it was the best gig or live anything i have ever seen. Completely mind-shattering. And even though his set was nothing like it, i have been utterly besotted with Selected Ambient Works II, to the point that I'd probably consider it my favourite album of the 90s now.
As a result, my spotify algorithms are pumping out nuff wonderful ambient shit and for now, it makes a great deal of sense.
