There's probably an older thread, but fuck it, we all have a lot of time on our hands, so let's start a new one. I've always thought their fabled debut album is a bit of a stylistic mess, despite the obvious great songs. Not to mention Nico's skin-crawlingly bad vocals. My favourite album, by far, is their self-titled. Pale Blue Eyes / Beginning to See the Light etc are Lou Reed at his peak tbh. I could happily never hear Heroin again. I also love the 1969: Live album. In short, I don't mind Doug Yule. So I was pleased to read this Quietus feature. thequietus.com/articles/28058-1969-velvet-underground-live-complete-matrix-tapes-reviewLet's hear your 2020 VU hot takes!

I was really into this band when I was 13/14 but I find them extremely overrated and quite boring these days, much prefer listening to Lou Reed’s solo albums.

I'm with you on VU being their best, absolutely love it. When they hit the refrain of 'How does it feeeel, to be looooooved' on Beginning to See the Light, it's one of most joyous moments in all of music.
Still love the debut, though.

I'm more of a John Cale man personally. Don't get me wrong, the two after Cale departs are PACKED with great songs, but the experimental/art-rock elements are mostly either numbed down or gone completely. John Cale's importance & influence on those first two records can't be understated, they changed music forever & people are still trying to capture that sound & failing miserably 50 years later. Loaded & VU of course are wonderful, but the magic of the velvet Underground is gone for me, I see them as Lou Reed records for the most part... which of course is never a bad thing.

Top 5 VU solo records?
Transformer FEAR Coney Island Baby Honi soit... Lou Reed [72]
I do like Berlin but it has never really grabbed me as a whole, been a few years since I've heard it now though. I downloaded both Reed & Cale's entire back catalogue a while back, been meaning to have a proper go through the pair.
but anyway, don't didzrespect the Cale.

I'm more of a John Cale man personally. Loaded & VU of course are wonderful, but the magic of the velvet Underground is gone for me. See this is where I disagree. The magic of the VU is as much Sterling and Mo working with Lou, as it is Lou working with John. Sterling's guitar in particular is such a fundamental part of the band. The sound he gets on Candy Says has never been replicated, even as you say, so many bands have tried since. That one song is the equal of anything on the debut. Also weird how the VU were singing about trans rights about four decades before anyone really knew what that meant. Cale is obviously brilliant, but this idea the VU ended when he left is just rubbish imo.

There's a great, great, live video of them performing this from the 1994 reunion tour. They all look like shit (apart from Cale), and you think at first it's going to be awful, but my god: when the refrain kicks in, it's magical.
