The 1990s were a three-piece indie rock band from Glasgow who, confusingly, recorded during the mid-2000s. The band name was always intended as a bad joke. Fronted by Jackie McKeown (the man behind The Yummy Fur) with Dino Bardot on bass (now plays lead guitar with Franz) and Michael McGuaghrin on drums (the very same Michael behind the Franz song). They released two solid albums on Rough Trade (the second, Kicks, is an underrated classic IMO). The third album was recorded in spring 2011 at Green Door Studio in Glasgow, with Sam Smith producing. Not that Sam Smith, the one behind cult Glasgow band Casual Sex. The Third Album has never been released. I don't know why. It sounds great. But here it is! A Soapbox exclusive. Check out that groove on 'Fassbinder Would Have Loved Techno' Do you or someone you know run a record label? Get in touch with Jackie and offer to release it. It's too good not to be heard more widely. wetransfer.com/downloads/12ca6686f6959b1f3145390bc9daf2f820200923110440/db1b63?fbclid=IwAR3amOwbs8Ps0hY9a7mqR4uDouxGJj6CvBj72M44qMuR32GhJ2VrgGy28F0

1st listen - not bad at all but I feel it lacks a big single plus some of the crispness and exuberance from their 2 first records, sounds a bit tired and demo-y in comparison

Green Door is a purely analogue studio. Also, they paid for it themselves. It was never going to have the shiny sound of Kicks. But I still think it sounds great tbh.

Enjoying it more on second listen, expectations more measured. Was expecting some kind of lost classic and it's basically a "more of the same but a little bit worse" which is still good enough. I got the same feeling after listening to Thin Lizzy's Johnny The Fox yesterday so this bunch is in good company.

What do you think?
You’re doing better than popular forum member and self-proclaimed 1990s superfan ‘Forever’.
I sent him a link last year and he’s still never heard it!

Give it a listen, guys. Definitely growing on me, I still believe it would have been a tad disappointing for a 3rd release as it doesn't do anything better than the previous 2 while adding absolutely nothing to them, but at the same time it's quite enjoyable if only a bit unambitious.
