They are supposed to play in Amsterdam in Jan 2022. I haven't been to a proper gig in ages so I thought I might give this a try while I'm still in this country.
I literally know nothing about them except the name and that they are relevant in music history, but I don't think I ever heard a tune or if the music they make could actually be classified as "tunes". I heard they put on great live shows, and that's where part of the interest comes from.
So is anybody here familiar with any of their music or has had any experience listening to them? Ta!

I've just noticed that The Residents' Eskimo LP was rated by popular forum member Mahoney a meagre 0.5 out of 5 stars on Rate Your Music, thus making it one of only 6 records (out of nearly 7000 Karl rated) to get the lowest possible score on the website. The plot thickens.

Yeah I've always wanted to catch them live, though I'm not sure how many original members are left at this point. Commercial Album is pretty good & though I've not heard it for years their debut is a lot of fun. TBH I've not heard them in years, sort of band I'd have to have a real deep dive into, but yes Eskimo rubbed me the wrong way probably like it if I heard it now!

p.s, I really hope when I'm dead somebody makes a post like you just did Simone. It'd mean the world to know that the time I wasted on that site wasn't for nothing. Will probably have the link to RYM on my Tombstone. "Here lies Karl Mahoney, postman, soapboxer, maker of terrible music & giver out of many stars on RYM".
"I can't believe he liked the Lemonheads that much" "1 star for Rumours, is he crazy?" "Who is this Tuckerman he gave 3.5 stars to, I must hear more!"
& I shall smile from the heavens.

It'd mean the world to know that the time I wasted on that site wasn't for nothing. I was heartbroken when I noticed you started listening to Jason Molina and didn't call me for advice!!! I always check your ratings first, expecially when I venture outside of my area of competence or when I want to listen to current music. Speaking of RYM, isn't it amazing how the audience of the website changed over the years? Take Eskimo for example - if you look at early reviews from 2006, people either said it was a masterpiece or it was shite - not unlike Trout Mask Replica. Which is a very genuine reaction to a genuinely puzzling album. And nowadays you get reviews like ESKIMO by THE RESIDENTS: WE NEED TO TALK ABOUT RACISM AND CULTURAL APPROPRIATION!! No we don't you prat.
Let's push the thread forward, shall we? A couple of days ago I discovered that back in the 80s The Residents locked Penn Jillette (the juggler from Penn & Teller) for one week in a motel room with nothing but Residents records and some food. Penn was supposed to listen to all their albums and record his impressions on tape. He recorded 50 hours of talk, which later the Residents edited to 90 minutes and released as double LP / cassette. This was their way to celebrate their 10th anniversary, apparently. I recommend you give it a listen, it's a great experiment and I suggest we now lock Derren Brown in a basement in Blackpool with the entire Jesus Abyss catalogue.

Nice, thanks!

I suggest Simone listens to the entire Residents back catalogue and then recommends us key releases to check out.

Just did a quick wikipedia of the residents and snakefinger, and saw this line "In 1972 Lithman returned to England and formed the pub rock band Chilli Willi and the Red Hot Peppers" I've seen this episode approximately 800 billion times, and all of a sudden this makes sense.
Mind. Blown.
