Second elimination round of the tournament, this one is subtitled EARLY PSYCHEDELIC PIONEERS The 13th Floor Elevators - The Psychedelic Sounds of... (1966) vs. Pink Floyd - The Piper at the Gates of Dawn (1967) Led by the genius of Roky Erickson, the 13th Floor Elevators pioneered a psychedelic sound that was quintessentially American, Texan even, influenced in equal parts by 50s rock'n'roll and long acid trips under the scorching Austin sun. Meanwhile Pink Floyd, led by the equally brilliant Syd Barrett, developed a British psychedelic sound that was all of their own, intertwining pop sensibilities, jazz influences, drugs and classic English fairytales. These two albums practically became the blueprint for psychedelia on the respective sides of the Atlantic.
...and now you have to pick one. The poll ends in just 5 days.

I've never had my moment with either of these records, always though they were fine enough, but nothing more; a good enough excuse to have another dig into both.

I'm not massive on either tbh, but I prefer the 13th floor elevators.

Have a had a reminder listen on both today, twice through each. As, like Ogden's and Disraeli Gears, it's been a while.
Both bloody great. Both influential. Both entirely different.
I think like popular forum member Mahoney said for Disraeli Gears/blues rock, the 13th Floor album feels like a good garage rock record creeping into Psych territory (i know there's a lot of overlap anyway) whereas Piper at the Gates of Dawn couldn't be more Psych and is something entirely other.
I think they're both brilliant to listen to but Piper's utter weirdness makes me want more.
I want to go back to Piper for more listens but after two runs through of the 13th Floor Elevators record i'm done for now.
Although- it's hard to think of a better opening track to any record than You're Gonna Miss Me.
Tough call, but Piper At The Gates of Dawn for me. I wonder where Pink Floyd would have gone had Syd not been booted out.

There was a guy on oasisforum whose name was James, also known as "Jim the Bin". Through him and due to my love for The La's, I got in touch on soulseek with a guy named Steven, who became a good internet friend of mine for a number of years. He was the guy who first introduced me to a lot of this obscure music from the 60s, including the 13th Floor Elevators. He would point out a lot of similarities between them and The La's, and I still think he was spot on. I had a listen today to The Psychedelic Sounds of... and I was instantly transported to 20 years ago, when I was just discovering this untapped goldmine of amazing music. Splash, Reverberation, Don't Fall Down, Fire Engine...this album is phenomenal. The 13th Floor Elevators will always get my vote.

I used to love piper at the gates of dawn but it really hasn’t aged well at all. I wouldn’t even rank it amongst their top 3 psychedelic albums.
Saucerful of secrets, atom heart mother and meddle are all massively superior albums.
Piper at the gates of dawn doesn’t even include Syd’s best songs.
