Records that really stand on their own. That imitators fall well short of. That nothing else has ever sounded quite like.
We need a thread to breathe some life into this creaking, hoary old forum while Simone lines up the next polls.
I'll start with Dummy by Portishead.
Loved it when it arrived nearly 30 years ago. It soundtracked many post clubbing come downs and many smoking sessions, but I never REALLY listened to it.
So, with new ears and great headphones I've given it another go and it really is stunning.
Every track a perfectly polished jewel and although the feel and atmosphere of each track is similar, they are all quite different.
It's amazing how many are instantly familiar. I dread to think how many TV adverts and backing tracks have used these songs.
Listen to any of Mysterons, Sour Times, Wandering Star, Numb, Roads, Biscuit, Glory Box and you think oh, that's that track by Portishead that everyone knows.
Plus, all tracks sound so sample heavy, but truthfully although some samples were used, so much of it- most of it- was recorded by the band.
And Beth Gibbons voice!
I don't know if any of you have seen them live? I've only seen a televised performance- I think from the Other Stage at Glastonbury, and it was sensational. You wouldn't think these songs would translate to a large festival stage.
Anyway- whenever the next best albums of all times thread comes around, this will feature somewhere high.

I saw them live at an outdoor show at the old port of Montreal, about 10 years ago, after 3rd came out. Most of the set was a combo of 3rd and dummy, with 2-3 songs off 'portishead'. It was, and I can't emphasize this enough, FANTASTIC. Beth sounded great, the band was nailing everything, and the atmosphere at 10pm in October on a coldish canadian night was perfect.
