That's exactly what happened to me with Butterfly house. Mani as well as many reviews bigged it up to be this great album & it ended up being my least favourite of theirs. I still like it (not got round to the acoustic version) but I can't help but feel the Coral are out of steam now Bill Ryder Jones has left. They were actually kind of dull when I saw them a month or two back. For a band with so many great songs that shouldn't be possible.

coral are a weird one. it feels a bit like theyve gotten old before their time.
when they burst onto the scene they were only about 18 and were genuinely exciting, seemed to worship zappa and beefheart and wanted to bring some weirdness to their music which was great. they must only be in their late 20s now but are bringing out the kind of records youd expect of a band in their 40s. theyre not awful (in fact i really like roots and echoes) but i do wish theyd inject a bit of weirdness back and find a bit of their creativity again rather than just keep producing these "nice" songs.

I think it's mostly to do with the loss of Bill Ryder Jones, I think he bought all the weird & wonderful influences to the band. James Skelly is an fantastic songwriter with a unbelievable knack for a melody but unfortunately with nothing interesting to go into the tunes they just end up being nothing special.
The Coral are the reason I got into Captain Beefheart, they mentioned him in NME when they had the debut out & I thought the name sounded so strange & cool that I had to check him out.

yeah same here, was 2002 when them and the music burst onto the scene and both seemed like theyd revolutionise british music. i remember most people on the masterplan saying the music were the better band but i always sided with the coral.

I was massive into the Music. That original take the long road video seemed like the 2nd coming of the stone roses to me. They were top supporting Oasis at shepherds bush as well.
Still would probably see them live but can't bring myself to listen to them on record anymore minus a handful of tunes, sounds dated to me now.

I don't want to butt in but I saw The Coral in Atlanta right after their debut, opening for Supergrass, god damn it was quite a double bill, one of the best gigs I've been to. Never bothered with any of their later albums though for some reason =/

havent the music split up now? i think ben said something about rob harvey mentioning it on his twitter.
felt like exciting times back then anyway with the co headline tour with them two bands, thought theyd both go on to be huge but neither really lived up to the promise.
gonna stick on the newest coral lp now actually as ive not really given it a fair listen, probably only listened to it once or twice.

There weird cunts anyway, smoked far too much pot & didn't produce enough material. Always loved this video though, it feels so surreal

Yeah he called them 'the worst band to ever support Oasis'
They were top at shepherds bush, Rob came out in an Argentina football shirt and they got heckled before they had even plugged in, got tons of abuse that set & they seemed to feed off it & give even more because of it. Top night, Oasis did two encores and finished with roll with it

Top night, Oasis did two encores and finished with roll with it well i read that and im sure he said something about how badly they dressed? but surely that must of come from something first, i wonder what got his goat so much about them - im guessing he'd obviosuly be aware of any bands there booking as support so the music (the actual music!) and the style of the band couldnt have come as a suprise....

despite everyone on here loving them ive never really delved into eels back catologue too much.
i gave beautiful freak a listen a month or so ago and thought it was pretty average really so just didnt think eels would be a band for me. just listened to electro-shock blues though and absolutely loved it. really great lp.
have downloaded end times now and will give that a spin in a bit. i think im gonna prefer e at his most depressive so thought that would be the right lp to try next.

Amazing band, Beautiful Freak is a shit starting point. Unfortunately that was my starting point as I bought the album when it came out in the days before I really even bought records. Didn't like it so never bothered with them again despite Kev telling me how great Eels were 27 times a week.
End times is the best record of the year as far as i'm concerned though it's much more simplistic sounding than Electro-shock, I'd recommend the double LP blinking Lights, it's got it all.

yeah the bird has beautiful freak on cd so thats why i tried starting with it. novacaine is obviously great but the rest is pretty dull.
just really loved electro shock and it kinda took me by suprise. noticed youve only given it 3.5 on rym tho bruv? you not a massive fan of it?
kinda expecting it to become my favourite eels lp now but obviously i still have all the rest to come.

It's a good record but everybody seems to think it's E's best record hands down which for me he's made much better records.
Freak is a grower but once again theres much better Eels records than that.
