Squid- Savage: This is immense. A new band has no right to be making music like this- it sounds like a kind of 8th album where a band has started experimenting. Only problem is, it's about 8 minutes too short.

I am not sure I am getting my point across... not saying they sound like Mark E Smith, but reading that article it's like they are doing some intellectual deep thing when imo the reasons are far less pseudo philosophical...
Anyway don't want to put them all together, Black Midi are incredibly talented, Squid seem like (sometimes) they take themselves a bit less seriously and have huge potential, not sure if I have heard Dry Cleaning yet. It's just all of them coming together at the same time is putting me off a bit, seeing BCNR live couldn't avoid thinking that I much preferred the instrumental sections.

Pozi- Noel: This feels like a pure soul track remixed by Ariel Pink. Great stuff.

seeing BCNR live couldn't avoid thinking that I much preferred the instrumental sections. What's wrong with that, though? They probably have more instrumental sections than all of the other bands mentioned in that article (and this thread) and I don't see what the issue is with that. Probablt 50% of what they do is instrumental. A lot of these artists are using the vocals in a different way, than what Liam does, but so what. It's not exactly new, is it? They're using the voice to complement the music. None of the artists would sound any good with a traditional sounding singer. I think what the article was trying to get at and probably should have delved further into, is the influence of Hip-Hop, which has been the dominant force in popular music for 15 years, all these bands are (mostly) from the first generation to grow up with the entirety of the musical landscape at their finger tips, for free. Most of Black Midi are still 19 and so the ability to discover artists and genre's that might have a bigger focus on instrumentation and less on traditional sounding vocals is endless. Plus, a lot of these bands are coming up together, playing together all the time, working with similar people and labels etc.. we see members from all these bands at each others gigs all the time, they're obviously rubbing off on each a lot as well. That's how these things work.

Lou Reed, Bob Dylan, Shaun Ryder, Mark e Smith, Patti Smith, Eddie Argos.
None of them could sing, all of them have essential vocals.

Maybe Dry Cleaning should try and get Adele in, really reach those emotional notes on 'Traditional Fish'.

If anyone is to be blamed for this boom in spoken word bands then it is me. Ever since the Jesus Abyss released Grave Times in April there has been another of these wannabe posers appear on a weekly basis.

It is still too early as most of them don't even have an album out yet, but I am missing a versatility or flexibility in their vocals, just that.

Maybe Dry Cleaning should try and get Adele in, really reach those emotional notes on 'Traditional Fish'. Or they might just as well cover the 4th Art Brut record front to back, but that is not what I'm saying. Probably saying 'a Liam' wasn't the best choice, maybe a Bobby Gillespie who can't sing either but at least tries something different once in a while... but of course it would not fit at all, and that is the issue, having a singer would be a strange decision for a whole generation
