I know my name's not Karl but I would recommend you to listen to them all, barny. You're going to love it. People with moustaches always seem to love the groove Yeah but I can't listen to more than one album at the same time, so a starting point would be nice, ton

The father has a HUGE soul collection at home - some of it is mega, the other half is fucking awful.
One day I'll work my way through most of it

yep yep yep i just love listening to singers who sound like singing is the most natural thing in the entire world, just an extension of talking. no strained vocal chords*, no dumb affected riffs or tics or stupid forced accents. just opening their mouth and telling a story. something like only sixteen would probably sound stupid if almost anyone else sang it, but he just nails the simplicity of the whole thing. and you send me is up there with god only knows, total classic. edit: *obv there are also plenty of great singers who proper rag their throats, but you know what i mean.

Love just about everything named already but Ill add some more, avoiding Motown only because if you have the Complete Motown Singles collections, you're pretty well covered on the necessities aside from the most important Stevie and Marvin records:
Wilson Pickett - A Hits Collection - This is not the title, but just about any hits collection with 15 or more songs will do. Incredible party music.
Sam & Dave - Hits - Same as Pickett, just get a hits collection.
Maxwell - Embrya & MTV Unplugged - Embrya is a strange record, but its wonderfully layered and the songs are cool. MTV Unplugged is a rip-roaring performance, made all the more special by a gospel version of NIN's Closer.
Sam Cooke - One Night Stand - Live record, amazing.
James Brown - Love Power Peace - Another live record, my favorite live record of all time for that matter.
James Brown's Funky People - Compilation of tracks by the JBs solo. Lyn Collins, etc. There are 3 volumes of it, the first one is the best, dive to the rest if you enjoy.
I like Erykah Badu a lot, but shes a strange one. Try her latest if you're adventurous.
always a good opportunity to post this:

An astonishing record of James and the Flames tearing the roof off the sucker at the mecca of R&B theatres, New York's Apollo. When King Records owner Syd Nathan refused to fund the recording, thinking it commercial folly, Brown single-mindedly proceeded anyway, paying for it out of his own pocket. He had been out on the road night after night for a while, and he knew that the magic that was part and parcel of a James Brown show was something no record had ever caught. Hit follows hit without a pause -- "I'll Go Crazy," "Try Me," "Think," "Please Please Please," "I Don't Mind," "Night Train," and more. The affirmative screams and cries of the audience are something you've never experienced unless you've seen the Brown Revue in a Black theater. If you have, I need not say more; if you haven't, suffice to say that this should be one of the very first records you ever own.

Im not a huge fan of early 60s JB. Sure, there are some bonafide classics and the Live at the Apollo album is a touchstone, I prefer the 70s era Brown. Albums like Hell and stuff of that ilk.
Its great, dont get me wrong, but the 70s stuff is even better.
Theres actually like 3 Live at the Apollo albums now I believe. The first one is still the best, but the other two are worth a listen. Also of note is the live album at Boston Garden the night MLK was killed and the bootleg of his Zaire concert for the Ali fight.

Ive never been able to get into whats goin on except for 3 songs. Its not bad tho, just the overall sound is so syrupy. Dont like the concept either, compared to someone like curtis mayfield its a bit shit really. Gaye's mid to late 60s output tho, great ''northern soul''. love starved heart compilation...
