Sly & The Family Stone - Stand!
Though it obviously veers into funk/rock crossover at times, its still an rnb record at its core, there are some big funkier, rockier, psychedelic moments on the album but they are padded out brilliantly but some really excellent pop/soul songs, they obviously have a few other great records, but this is my favourite and good place to start if you have never heard them or it..
Aretha Fraknlin - Aretha Now
This gets mixed reviews but i've always been a fan, its got a couple of big singles on it but the rest is still good, a couple of renditions of other soul standards too..
Sam Cooke - Live at the Harlem Square Club 1963
This is the best live album ever, by miles, such a good fun listen, sounds like he is having a lot of fun.
Also, this isn't a great great album, but I stumbled across this record from last year recently..
Aloe Blacc - Good Things
The lead of single 'I need a dollar' is fantastic, the album runs out of steam a bit, but there are some good moments and for a modern day soul album its not bad, he wears his influences on his sleeve, tight and neat arrangements ala Al Green, worth a listen anyway..
I think it was either Ton or Bart posted this clip in the 'Groove' thread a few months back of James Booker..
I loved it, though its not exactly 'traditional', its more New Orleans esque piano based stuff with souly arrangements, anyway there is an official album of that performance called Live at the Montreaux Jazz festival' and its a great little album, been loving it the last few months, thanks Ton or Bart for that recommendation..
