Finally got around to hearing Across 110th St. Fucking brilliant. I saw Krburg has only given it 2 and a half stars on RYM. This upsets me. If you don't need my love, baby give it back

Listening to this for the first time, superb stuff: died aged 27 in 1970. His obesity, brought on by glandular disease, was signed to Curtis Mayfield's label. Only recorded a handful of tracks before his passing. Listening it seems like a huge waste of talent. Theres an almost ten minute version of A Change Is Gonna Come which is breathtaking. Also, looks like the drummer from Yuck

'Hard Times' is one of the best soul songs I've ever heard.

Had a listen to his version of A Change Is Gonna Come yesterday and it is huge - the screams took me a little by surprise but top version.
Will give the rest of the album a go later. Always a shame but yet not surprising when you see he was another 27 year old

It's great stuff, I'm sure you'll love it Brad. Really excited, for years I've been pissed off that many of Wilson Pickett's golden period albums were either too hard to track down or any I found were in poor quality but I found 'Funky Midnight Mover: The Atlantic Studio Recordings 1962 - 1978' which is basically every song he did for Atlantic so I've spent ages retagging all the tracks to form the proper LP's Flicking through random tracks, it's shocking just how good every song is so far. I can't wait to give all these records a go. Just feels like they are all gonna be near classics for me. The Exciting Wilson Pickett is one of the most upbeat joyous records I've ever heard, hope a few of his others can match it. Just listened to his Hey Jude LP, fantastic. His cover of the title track is so damn good & I can't stand the original.

Wilson Pickett, good call. If you look at the actual ''hits'' he must be in double figures, yet he's so underrated. String of great albums in the late 60's tbh. Same with Marvin Gaye's mid to late 60's output, classic stuff, yet often overlooked.
Then again, they all released so much albums in that period, hard to keep track of..

It's just all of such high quality. Never any poor tracks, they all have that special sound that makes them so good. Seems as if all his Atlantic LP's were great from what I've heard so far.
Had a few listens to From A Whisper To A Scream by Esther Phillips as I saw you gave it a 4.5 on RYM, what a voice, really loving this record.

I dunno if they ratings are accurate any more though, theyre all old and i havent got any of the albums any more (life's work: destroyed) Always find that if somethings a bit obscure i give it a higher rating

That's fine as anything you've rated highly tends to be at least good. If I lost my mp3's I'd kill myself.
Luckily they are on the PC then backed up on 2 separate external drives then jamesdcody also has a copy of the archives. Might send a copy into space incase earth ever ends.

Another obscure one which I've just found through that Zooey blog. William Pulliam, who performed in the 70s under the name Darondo, was a funk and soul singer who sounded like a combination of Ronald Isley and Al Green. Little known by anyone except serious enthusiasts of that genre, Darondo is highly respected by that limited audience. The mythology surrounding Darondo is that he was a pimp, although he denies this claim. Still living in the San Francisco Bay area, Darondo has received considerably more attention in recent years thanks to TCOTU DJ Gilles Peterson playing his 1973 single, "Didn't I" on his BBC Radio 1 program.
Darondo recorded three singles and played four shows in the ’70s ,and then stopped and drove home in his Rolls Royce after he opened for James Brown. Later he traveled the world collecting interesting artifacts, became the king of Bay Area cable with three shows per day, and worked as a physical therapist coaxing patients to walk again.[1]
Three singles recorded during the early 1970s were re-released on Luv N HaightThis is a compilation thats came out this year of all his recorded material (16 tracks). From the looks of things he never released a proper studio LP. Very Al Green sounding & for the most part up there in terms of quality with the reverend. Wonder if he's still a pimp
