it would've been great to see this thread back in the old days. a hundred pictures of charlotte hatherley, a short discussion on how republica never lived up to their early potential, and a debate on whether lisa moorish ruins the warchild version of fade away.

I'd bet my external hard-drives on Shenandoah knowing more & listening to Dylan more than you ever have. Me on the other hand....I have every album dylan has ever done, I have close to 800 dylan bootlegs, and have seen him live 20+ times. (none of those are exaggerations, btw.) I have heard at least 10 Joni albums, and saw her live. (I dated a girl who was a massive fan of hers.) She is entirely accurately rated by where she is. Which is the female equivalent of James Taylor. Someone who has written some very good, pleasant songs, and that's pretty much it. ETA: which is not meant to be an insult by any means. I kind of like some of james taylor's stuff. (I have also seen him live.) You are right, sound wise she is very much similar in style to James Taylor but Joni is often cited as the female Dylan, which perhaps is lazy but still a compliant to be called the female version of what is regarded as the best songwriter of all time. I think the point Simone was trying to make is that had she been male she could of been regarded higher (or even as highly) instead of being 'a female version of' anything.

You can book Republica for a few grand to play party's still to this day. They had a couple of mega hits. Might get them to play the pub before the BDI gigs.

I don't think she would be, though. If I look at her objectively, and I think I can, she's written some really good songs, has a couple of all-timer level albums....and a whole lot of shit. I didn't mean that she sounds sonically the same as James Taylor (though she does, to a degree), but she's at that level in terms of "the all-timers". She could have 4 penises and still not be in the same discussion as Dylan. Mainly because there's 3-4 people *total* who ever get to that level. (Lennon/Mac, and *maybe* Neil.)
A more interesting case is Carole King. Shouldn't she be up there with the all-time greats? She was half-responsible for an entire *genre* before the dylans/beatles of the world even existed.

I'm not even massive into Joni Mitchell, I was just re-enforcing Simone's post due to Andy making one usual one line shit posts that offer nothing other than making himself look a prat.
Neil Young is on an entire different playing field to every songwriter ever in my book but different songwriters for different tastes.

I'm with Karl in nearly every post he has made in this thread edit: that was just too dull specially the first comment about the proportion, the one about film writers and the Andy-owning

Are you thinking of booking Republica as well? Safron was a visionary, a huge influence on Lady Gaga.

Along with Babylon Zoo they should of dominated the 90's. I don't think the public was ready for either.

I have heard at least 10 Joni albums, and saw her live. (I dated a girl who was a massive fan of hers.) She is entirely accurately rated by where she is. Which is the female equivalent of James Taylor. Someone who has written some very good, pleasant songs, and that's pretty much it. Well, if you think that Blue, Hissing of Summer Lawns, Court and Spark, Hejira, Don Juan's Reckless Daughter etc are just collections of pleasant songs then there's really nothing much to say. To me, they are easily the pinnacle of 70s songwriting and the only songwriters who could rival her output are actually Bob Dylan and Neil Young. And the James Taylor comparison is rather gratuitous, just because they were friends in real life doesn't mean they sound alike. I've never seen James Taylor playing with world class jazz musicians, never seen him tributed from people like Herbie Hancock, Jaco Pastorius, Pat Metheny, Bob Dylan, Robbie Robertson (of The Band fame) etc etc, never seen him inventing different and exclusive tunings to play the guitar and the list can go on forever. Only thing I've seen him doing is losing a copious amount of hair and playing bland covers of Joni Mitchell. There's a very good point Joni makes which is written in "On The Road With Bob Dylan" (since you're a Dylan fan, I assume you have read it) where Ratso (the writer) says to Joni his 3 favourite male songwriters and his 3 favourite female songwriters, and she gets mad at him because there's no really need to separate the women from the men, as if they were 2 different categories. But then again, we're just educated in thinking that women play on an inferior level compared to men, and even the best female artist can't rival the mediocre men, let alone the best ones. It would be like saying that I can't trust your opinions that much because you're from Canada, which is an effeminate, pale, bland version of the United States.

The comparison to James Taylor has nothing to do with anything beyond him being the first name I thought of when the name 'joni mitchell' and 'equivalent male talent' came up. You clearly have something of an inflated opinion of Joni Mitchell as compared to everyone else, which I suppose makes you the female equivalent of Axl with Pink Floyd. Oh, and this: "Robbie Robertson (of The Band fame) " As opposed to the Robbie Robertson of Deep Purple fame?
