A new concept EP of songs I've come up with recently Karl Mahoney - '27, Not Out'01. 27, Not Out [0.52] 02: Picking Up The Pieces [3.59] 03: Who's That Knocking on my door? [1:06] 04: Lord Don't Take Me Away (Featuring Helen The Swede) [1:14] 05: The 27 Club [3.04] 06: Kurt Cobain's Stomach Pain [2.18] 07: I hear Voices [1.06] 08: White Noise [0.11] Download:www.megaturtle.com/?d=CMHN8CY6 or rapidshare.com/files/461265715/27._not_out.rarThis is a concept EP about whether or not I wish to join the 27 club & kill myself before I hit my 28th birthday. The constant themes throughout are wasted lives, questioning my own mortality & the death of 27 year old rock stars. The opening spoken word title track 27, Not Out received rave reviews from SuperJohnny & Magneto when they heard a sneak preview at Chelmsford train station a few months back Picking Up The Pieces - about a man who loses his friends & family through alcoholism, is a cockney anthem. Who's That Knocking On My Door - me attempting to be Tom Waits. Lord Don't Take Me Away - about me not wanting to die yet. Didn't work with me singing/talking over it so I got my bird do it in another language. The 27, Club - A song about the famous club of dead rock stars aged 27 Kurt Cobain's Stomach Pain - is about exactly that. Sometimes I get a bad stomach & do a nasty shit, I feel his pain. Kurt provides vocals & also features on the EP's artwork. I Hear Voices - This track has Satan singing the classic songs of all the members of the 27 club. White Noise - The only track not recorded at Karl Mahoney's home studio. White Noise was recorded at Royal Mail, Sidcup & features JamesDCody & King John on the table drums with 'Screaming' Karl Mahoney on vox. Thanks to anybody who takes the time to listen

I challenge anyone to listen to 'Kurt Cobain's Stomach Pain' and look at the EP's front cover and not be affected. Haunting stuff.
Another classic Karl.

really enjoyed this, seriously.
27 not out is a nice opener and sets the scene for the rest of the ep nicely.
picking up the pieces reminds me ever so slightly of the rifles and i think it showcases the fact that you seem a lot more confident about your vocals this time around compared to learning the trade.
whos that knocking on my door is enjoyable too and nice to hear youre willing to try something a bit different, similar sentiment with lord dont take me away really - learning the trade was all very similar but its nice to hear totally different sounds on this release.
i think the 27 club is probably my favourite karl mahoney track. this is genuinely really fucking good and id love to hear it recorded in a proper studio with a proper band.
kurt cobains stomach pain is a great title and i liked the use of the sampe of his voice but ultimately the song didnt really go anywhere. i think it would have maybe benefited from not being acoustic and getting some shoegaze sound in there.
i hear voices is a good idea but i think could have benefited from being a bit longer, white noise is an effective ending however.
so yeah really enjoyable overall and the best thing to come from yellow peril records.
8/10

Thanks for listening brother Unfortunately I only have an acoustic and that fucking roll up piano which now is broke & stuck on the same sound I'd love to bring some nasty shoegaze sounds to the mix. Will probably retire the guitar now & get one of them programs I can make beats on & try to become the new Odd Future.

Wrote quite a nice, in depth review but the cunting computer crashed before i could press POST REPLY. Story of my life tbh Alas - another addition to the ever growing catalogue. Enjoyed it! Bit short but then again its only a nice little EP. It's good to hear you tinkering with a few new ideas and yeah keep it up I've always got time for a man creating a little bit of ART AND ROCK & ROLL of his own. 6/10 - weakest so far but still a very enjoyable record with the opener and the 'proper' songs taking centre stage. I always wondered how long it would take to get The Swede on tape

I'm very impressed Karl, I think this is your best to date. Your songwriting really got sharper and more direct and your acoustic songs have some kind of Ray Davies-esque presence for some reason. Picking Up the Pieces is my favourite of the lot so far, it's a very strong tune and it has a couple of genuine original moments.
I think your style is getting very personal and unique, and this release shows some serious effort in creativity (different sounds and styles, trying different solutions etc). This is very very good but I sense that the next records will be really special.

Thanks for the kind comments Simone. I kind of wish I'd held out & tried to make a full length record again but I'm completely out of ideas. It's kind of hard when you can only play about 10 different chords, can't play bar-chords or even a proper F chord to come up with songs that sound different to the last on an acoustic guitar. Broke the shitty roll up keyboard as well so I'm doomed now. I'm seriously considering getting one of those beat making/dance programs & making some kind of instrumental hip-hop record next though I'll probably download the software & be intimidated by it & give up after 5 minutes. Do you have any new songs in the pipeline? FRIDAY NIGHT IN THE PUBKarl: We're bringing a guitar to Glastonbury Magneto: Wicked, you can play Rolling Thunder Karl: Na, I don't know the chords I only remember the chords to one of my songs off the top of my head. They are all written in notepad with chord names that only mean something to me like 'upside down D' 'funny A' & 'Fake F' Sorry Ax-man. Rolling Thunder was a complete fluke which happened after watching Once Upon A Time In The West, I could feel Bronson's power flowing through my veins as the lyrics came out.

I've just listened to this Great work, you're the master of concept albums tbh. The Tom Waits track is brilliant although White Noise is my favourite. Hope you really die before it's too late and your work gets discovered by someone in 50 years and then you grow a legion of fans. In fact you're already inspiring people out there, I have seen a video with Mourinho talking over a bossanova rythm, surely influenced by the Kurt Kobain's track.

Thank you guys. I used to snicker at the concept album but now I embrace it & can't imagine ever making anything that doesn't involve one.
Thanks Axl. I guess I'm still coming to terms with the fact that I wrote Rolling Thunder. I am still in denial of it's greatness, I guess one day I'll look back and be proud that I wrote such a song but for now the weight of the track is pinning me down for the 1-2-3.
BTW Ax-man, I tried Kate Bush's Hounds of love out about six months ago after you was talking about her & I didn't get it, I think the 80's sound of it kind of put me off. However, today I listened to The Kick Inside & really loved it. Where should I go next? Will stick with hounds of love, hopefully I'll get into it.

As much as I loved your previous effort, this is much more focused, in a good way. "picking up the pieces" had me grabbing my guitar and strumming along. I like the EPness of it, it made a fun undaunting listen.

Whopped this on the iPod for a listen at some point. Will report back, loike
Btw Karl, it might be worth d/l Kate Bush's new record Director's Cut, as she's basically gone back and pared-down/re-recorded some of her best tunes. Apparently they sound great
