Been very slack lately, OK here goes, lots to update...
010: Inception (2010) - Christopher NolanI enjoyed it, didn't think it was as amazing as loads of people have claimed but it was enjoyable, didn't really have a problem keeping up with it either as loads of people had said it was a
head fuck and that you really need to concentrate, I found it quite easy to follow, and thought it was explained quite well. my only gripe with it was it was too similar to shutter island in premise, though I preferred it to that film, the whole thing of DiCaprio/viewer slowly unlocking the mystery of the break up of his family was very samey.

011: Chinatown (1974) - Roman PolanskiI like the pacing of this film, seems to float along really nicely, slowly uncovering the mysteries, good old fashioned linear storytelling, Nicholson and Dunaway are both great, but the ending blew me away, brilliantly shoy and conceived, I really was not expecting it either, the last 5 minutes really take the film to a higher level.
8.1
012: The Apartment (1960) - Jack LemonAnother enjoyable film, light hearted comedy dealing with darker issues but not quite a black comedy, Jack Lemon is brilliant in it, such a great physical actor and he seems to be able to embody completly different emotions and believably too, great premise too.
8.1
013: Waynes World (1992) - Penelope SpheerisLike people who say Star Wars was the film of their youth, this was mine, I must have watched this film 50 times in my life, can't really say more, its a stupid and what not but I have a connection with it, I know all the words and I still laugh at it, the second one wasn't as good but still a favourite.
8.4
014: Blood Simple (1984) - Joel CoenThe Coens first film, tense film noir pastiche, you can tell they are finding their feet, doesn't threaten to reach the dizzy heights they have done since, but enjoyable nontheless.
7.3
015: The Man Who Wasn't There (2001) - Joel CoenAlong with Fargo, probably my favourite Coens film, brilliantly shot, feels like it could have been made in 1960, great performance from Billy Bob Thornton, you are really dragged through the film at his characters pace which is a great achievement, and obviously a great meandering story from the Coens, brilliant.
9.0
016: Changeling (2008) - Clint EastwoodI wasn't really sure this would be my thing before watching it, but the fact it had good reveiws and Eastwood was directing lead me to watch it and I was really surprised, I loved it. Never been a huge fan of Jolie before but she puts in a great performance, but the story is the killer, its quite harrowing at times and the direction is supurb, really sucks you into the plight of the protagonist and feels very claustrophobic at times.
8.8
017: The Big Lebowski (1998) - Joel CoenI was going through a bit of a Coens phase... anyway this was the first of their films I ever saw years ago and I don't think I fully appreciated it then, I thought it was a bit weird, but as tastes expand and I've come to love all of their work I went back to this with opened eyes and although it's very enjoyable, I don't think its this amazingly great film that it is sometimes made out to be, I like the Dude on his own, but the dialogue between the Dude and John Goodmans character grates on me sometimes, a small qualm really, but a good film nonetheless, if not mind blowing.
7.8
018: North By Northwest (1959) - Alfred HitchcockI suppsoe a little lense intense for Hitchcock and not as dark as he can be, but one of his strongest films for me, does well to mix up a good potion of intensitty & slight comedy with a really well paced and slightly fragmented story, some great notorious scenes too with the crop duster and mount Rushmore at the end. Carey Grant does what Carey Grant does too and puts in a good performance and I will never tire of listening to James Masons voice
8.2
019: The Royal Tenenbaums (2001) - Wed AndersonI really enjoy all of Wes Andersons films, even The Life Aquatic, but this along with Rushmore & Bottle Rocket are my favourites, good performances all round from the ensamble cast, no real standouts, it works well because like the story everyone is pulling at their own piece of overal narrative, I love Andersons little direction techniques and camera work and soundtracks though, they really keep things fresh and interesting.
8.2
020: The Shining (1980) - Stanley KubrickFirst time I've seen this, good solid film, good performance from Nicholson, I suppose its doing what he does best, good interesting direction from Kubrick as well, it
looks fantastic too. I'm not really a horror movie fan as such and although this is only bordering on horror its the kind I prefer, tense and slow building, Shelly Duvall is a tad annoying though.
8.3
021: Unstoppable (2010) - Tony ScottNot great to be honest, only really watched it as I was at my parents house and they had it on, kind of obvious 'average man saves the day' type hollywood film, Denzil Washington being Denzil Washington, ok for a lazy Sundy afternoon watch I suppose, nothing more.
5.0
022: A Clockwork Orange (1971) - Stanley KubrickA stone cold classic obviously, love it, everything about it, the style, how it looks, the soundtrack, the narrative, Malcolm McDowells stirling performance, can't really add much more that hasn't already been said
8.9
023: Inland Empire (2006) - David LynchWhat the fu
ck? Probably the must fu
cked up weird film i've ever seen, but I loved it, I love Lynch anyway and he is obviously very abstract, but I think its the weirdest film he's ever done, the brilliant thing about Lynch is you have to take yourself out of the film and see the big picture to have any chance of understanding even the smallest part of it, but you can't whilst your watching it because it sucks you right into this nightmarish meandering abstract mindset that goes all over the place, so you have to really sit and ponder about it afterwards, its all I've thought about since I watched it. Laura Dern is absolutely fantastic in it too. Mullholland Drive was a headfu
ck and really took some thinking and reading up on, this is even weirder.
8.9
024: Twin Town (1997) - Kevin AllenIt was ok actually, a light hearted look at quite a bleak way of life. Set in Swansea, kind of black comedy but involving quite a dark story, remember seeing this when I was a kid and enjoying it, seemed a bit tamer now, but a decent watch
