16. bon iver - bon iver (apart from the unforgiveable last track) It still makes me cringe whenever I hear it. It's become the stuff of legend. Looking forward to seeing everybody's lists and trying out stuff I've missed. Stocky, My guess is that it's the Big Krit record, I really hope it's not James Blake because if it is, I won't be angry... just disappointed!

That Bon Iver record for me probably registers in my 'Most Disappointing' category. Fortunately Beth, Rest is ''hidden'' at the end otherwise I may have rated it lower.
Should get chance to type up on the computer at the weekend - off back to Kent tonight so its been mobile only the last few days. And that would be an epic portable post!
There are a few albums I've not heard enough to rate so I'll have to keep them out for the moment.

The fuller sound IMO hasn't added anything to his songs except making them feel a little bloated and the voice effect thing really grates on me with this record.

I must say I found both Gruff's and BSP records quite dull

Yeah, Bon Iver was an odd album for me. Wasn't a huge fan to start with but with repeated listens it reveals itself more and more. 'Beth, Rest' i found hillarious when I first heard it, totally didn't fit with the overall 'sound' of the album, but, after you've heard it a few times and know that intro is coming up, it's great.
Kids On A Crime Spree was a late entry onto the list, but, I do really love it.
It's been a great year for music.

I started hating it but it has won me, great executed video, very good way of trying to "sell" a song these days.

My favourite tunes of the year:
1 Elbow - Lippy Kids 2 Friendly Fires - Live Those Days Tonight 3 Nicki Minaj - Super Bass 4 Tyler the Creator - Yonkers 5 The Pains Of Being Pure At Heart - Heaven's Gonna Happen Now 6 Kid Canaveral - You Only Went Out To Get Drunk Last Night 7 Kasabian - Re-wired 8 Nero - Promises 9 Beady Eye - Millionaire 10 Laura Marling - The Muse
11 Miles Kane - Come Closer 12 Frank Ocean - Swim Good 13 The Streets - Those That Don’t Know 14 Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds - AKA… What A Life 15 Yuck - Shook Down 16 The Streets - Trying To Kill M.E. 17 Pixie Lott - All About Tonight 18 FOUND - Anti-Climb Paint 19 Laura Marling - All My Rage 20 Shabazz Palaces - Yeah You
21 Twin Atlantic - Make A Beast Of Myself 22 Action Bronson - The Madness 23 Bill Wells & Aidan Moffat - Man Of The Cloth 24 Cut Copy - Where I’m Going 25 Cage The Elephant - Around My Head 26 Mariachi El Bronx - 48 Roses 27 Pusha T & Tyler the Creator - Trouble On My Mind 28 Cerebral Ballzy - Drug Myself Dumb 29 The Game, Tyler the Creator & Lil Wayne - Martians Vs Goblins 30 Wretch 32 - Traktor
My favourite live sets of the year:
1 Janelle Monáe [Glasgow ABC - February] Perfect gig. Monae and her band often get compared to James Brown, and there is an urgency about them, as well as the style, that is definitely JB, but P-Funk was the one ringing in my mind when I saw her live. Loved the record last year, but still I was totally blown away when I was at this gig. Most fun I've had at a gig all year.
2 The Bronx [Reading Festival - August] Have long wanted to see the Bronx since their first, and best, record. Their third and most recent album is also a stunner, so I suppose it was unsurprising that it was the most relentless setlist in terms of quality that I saw all year. Liveliest crowd I've been part of all year as well, really is all or nothing with the Bronx, no cunt was just standing about. Anybody that likes Future of the Left, Mclusky, Pulled apart by Horses etc should check out the Bronx as soon as they can, live or on record, astounding.
3= Pulp [TCOTU Hyde Park - July] 3= Pulp [Reading Festival - August] Can't really separate these two, both were quality. Hyde park had Mile End, Reading had Richard Hawley back on guitar for Sunrise, otherwise much was similar. Having seen his solo show before, it was no surprise to see Jarvis with the crowd in the palm of his hand, but it was great to hear those songs live as I wasn't into them in 2002 and didn't get the chance to see them. This Is Hardcore live was an eerie ethereal treat, and Common People was predictably magic.
5 Les Savy Fav [Aberdeen Tunnels - March] My mate had only heard Les Savy Fav on record before this gig, and was surprised to see the four ordinary workshirt-wearing Americans on stage joined by an enormous fat cunt with a beard (who had glitter all over his face and was wearing a woman's blouse) who waded his way through the middle of the crowd to his mic at the front of the stage. He was rarely onstage for the whole gig, clambering the bar, the sound desk, the railings, and running out of the fire exit at one point, disappearing for five minutes before coming back in the main door. Mad as fuck, but keyly, with loads of incredible tunes. Patty Lee and Let's Get Out of Here were highlights of a maniacal show.
6 Morrissey [Dunoon Queens Hall - June] What a fucking gig. Opened with I Want The One I Can't Have and finished with This Charming Man, playing First of the Gang to Die, Shoplifters, Everyday is like Sunday and There is a Light, not much more needs to be said, the man is a king among men. I will add that Dunoon was surreal that weekend, tiny Scottish seaside town overrun by folk in their 40s with quiffs, young quines wearing homemade Meat Is Murder t-shirts, and every other hotel window blaring Smiths and Morrissey all day. One pub was packed out the door with everyone singing Please please please.... it was like a European away day.
7 Deftones [Reading Festival - August] Deftones are absolutely on fire now, and Chino's back to being a skinny hyperactive frontman, rather than the fat bastard hiding behing a rhythm guitar that he was for so long. Be Quiet and Drive, You've Seen the Butcher and 7 Words were highlights for me. Also the most amount of weed in the air of any show I've been to since Nas.
8 The Streets [Glasgow ABC - February] Sad to see him leave The Streets alone, as he still is a brilliant showman, loves to get the crowd involved and has an army of great and unique tracks to his name. Rob Harvey did the female vocals of every song very well also.
9 Laura Marling [Aberdeen Lemon Tree - July] Laura Marling is unstoppable, three quality albums at 21, at this rate she could have an Oasis-sized back catalogue by the time she can join the 27 club. Prolific as she is, quality is never sacrificed and I got to see 7 of the tracks off the new one played at the lemon tree before the album got released. The Muse and All My Rage immediately grabbed me and are still my favourites of the new one, but older tunes from the previous two albums also sounded mega. No mumfords to be seen in her band these days either, so all good.
10 Muse [Reading Festival - August] This was an Origin of Symettry show, which I was over the moon about, as Muse haven't released anything I've thought was a solid album since then. Lots of good singles along the way, but overlong albums spilling with filler. As a result of the set being Origin of Symettry, followed by a miniature greatest hits set, it was the best set I'm ever likely to see them play. They had the pyro, big graphics, stage props etc because they aren't the most charismatic boys, but they can fucking play. Also happy to see them confuse a bunch of English kids with the likes of Megalomania as they were shouting for 'Uprising' hahah.
11 Elbow [Glasgow SECC - March] 12 Frightened Rabbit (acoustic) [Aberdeen Snafu - January] 13 Friendly Fires [Reading Festival - August] 14 Best Coast [Reading Festival - August] 15 The Phantom Band [Aberdeen Tunnels - March] 16 The Streets [Reading Festival - August] 17 The Hives [TCOTU Hyde Park - July] 18 Pulled Apart By Horses [Reading Festival - August] 19 Beady Eye [Reading Festival - August] 20 Kid Canaveral [Aberdeen Tunnels - December]
21 Kasabian [Aberdeen AECC - December] 22 Cut Copy [TCOTU Hyde Park - July] 23 Jimmy Eat World [Reading Festival - August] 24 FOUND [Aberdeen Tunnels - December] 25 Yuck [TCOTU Hyde Park - July] 26 Cerebral Ballzy [Reading Festival - August] 27 Odd Future [Reading Festival - August] 28 Stephen Fretwell [Aberdeen Lemon Tree - December] 29 Mariachi El Bronx [Reading Festival - August] 30 Lone Pigeon [Aberdeen Blue Lamp - April]
Albums to come soon...

I won't make a top 500 or whatever coz that would be a lie. Here's the record i actually listened to, not just downloaded, went through once or twice and never looked back on. There's probably 30 more i could have listed, but i didn't have time to give them a real chance.
1- Noel Gallagher's High Flying Birds - S/T Okay, it's Noel, so it gotta be #1… well no, i genuinely love that record. It could have been better (If i Had a Gun i'm looking at you)… but then not many records are perfect these days. This would will do as first solo record. + Noel Gallagher, Strings & horns sections = ear orgasm
2 - Fountains Of Wayne - Sky Full Of Holes Well none of you guys probably heard this but it's a fine pop folk record, it's got some real gems on it, and lyrically they're unbeatable.
3- The Loves - … Love You A good record to end a band that really never got the success they should have got. Probably because the singer's voice can be really cringeworthy. But i like unusual voices. And it's funny, witty and it's got good retro songs on it without sounding too retro.
4 - The Booze - At Maximum Volume Another band that broke up this year due to financial issues. Shame really. They're no reinventing the wheel but again, who is these days. Good songs, good production, great singer and musicians, what else would you need. I love this.
5 - Pokey LaFarge & The South City Three - Middle Of Everywhere What's good about that band is that i travel in my head. With them it's all about the feeling of freedom on the road. another strong recording with some good old americana songs that sound like they actually were recorded in the 20s / 30s. Not many bands can achieve that.
6 - Ivy - All Hours The complete opposite. Modern, a bit clubby and drum 'n' bass. I dont think there's one guitar on that record.
7 - Beady Eye - Different Gear, Still Speeding I won't lie, i listened to it to death back in early 2011 and i still rate it as a good record. Some tunes on it, but let down by a U2 production. Please change producer for the next one. Maybe a 11 track record should be enough too.
8 - Sallie Ford & The Sound Outside - Dirty Radio Only discovered this a couple days ago, but what a slap in the face. Think female White Stripes / Black Keys with 50s distortion. Not too much overdubs, just people playing and microphones recording. As long as there's acts like this surviving in the future, we'll be fine.
9 - The Vinyl Stitches - S/T A little disappointed by the LP coz the EP was so strong. Some good tunes, some weaker ones. Think dark Velvet Underground meet The Ramones.
10- Triptides - Pyschic Summer Another retro-ish number, not the best thing this year, not the worst, enjoyable enough.
Not got into previous favorites: Foo Fighters - Wasting Light : well, down the wrong road for a few years now. that pseudo garage record that isn't is a joke really The Black Keys : El Camino : "Let's make another album fast to make as much money as we can", that band is going down the toilet. Kasabian - Velociraptor : Starts off great, but after 5 tracks, what a bore. Juste like many of their records actually. Ryan Adams - Ashes & Fire : quite enjoyed it but not enough variety i guess to be in the Top 10
Joke Of the Year: The Strokes - Angles
Gigs of the year: Pulp @ Hyde Park. Surreal. Been waiting for this for 15 years. Just amazing. Noel Gallagher was okay in TCOTU, huge in Paris. He's on the right track. Neil Hannon (Divine Comedy), seen him three times this year, always an amazing night. Just a piano or a guitar, amazing presence. Ryan Adams @ the Trianon, Paris
Discoveries from the past years, looking for their 2012 LP : Golden Animals - Mindblowing stuff with a singer who's got Jim Morrison's voice. "White Stripes set up" (guy on guitar, girl on drums) but it sounds way different, very 70s pscyhedelic.
He's My Brother She's My Sister - Cabaret pop i'd call it, got huge expectation for it. There's a girl tap dancing in the band.
