Searched in the bar at the top and couldnae find anything about the man, but I'm sure theres folk on this forum thats talked him up before?
Basically, I've never really heard much by Neil Young, excepting Oasis' cover at Wembley, and now, this week, I've been listening to Decade, after hearing it on a trip back to my dad's house, and pinching it. He was listening to it, tho i canna mind hearing a note of it before when growing up, he's liked him for years.
Basically, where should I start wi gettin into Neil young? Nae really a fan of Sugar mountain, heart of gold or I believe in you, but everything else is sitting well with me offof Decade.
Where now? Appreciate any recommendations.

Oh shit, where to start, well if you don't like Heart of Gold, then stay clear of Harvest for now, it's his most popular record, not my favourite but still a solid album, maybe come back to it later when you've heard other stuff. I could list loads of albums, but my top 3 would be:
Tonights The Night:
Not everyone's favourite, its probably Neil at his bleakest and rawest, Neil himself has said its the closest to 'Art' he ever came. Its ragged and dirty. Basically 2 of Neil's close friends had died and he wrote a bunch of songs and went into a rehearsal room and recorded live in the rehearsal room as they went along. Plenty of bum notes and cracked voices but its utterly pure.
On The Beach:
Its like the counter part to Tonights The Night, from the same time, the themes of the songs deal with a similar issues to TTN, but the recordings are a lot cleaner and it was recorded 'properly', the first half is full band stuff and a bit more 'up' sounding, the second half is mainly acoustic and introspective.
After The Goldrush:
A real mish mash of sounds and songs that Neil would veer into later on, there are country ballads, sombre acoustic melancholy and big guitar driven songs, some of his best pure songwriting I think, well crafted songs, recording half shabbily in that typical Neil Young lethargical way.
Those would be my 3 picks, though a lot of people would say otherwise about the first two, if you want some big guitars and raaawk, try Zuma, Everybody Know's This Is Nowhere or Rust Never Sleeps.

My personal favourites have to be Zuma & After The Gold Rush. Harvest & On The Beach are pretty great, too. Also a big fan of American Stars N Bars, reckon it's a bit underrated.

Love the acoustic side of Rust Never Sleeps.
I think Kev's recommendations are where you should start. Good shout.

I'd go for 'On the Beach', which is the LP that got me hooked.
I've said this before, but I can only listen to him in small doses. His lyrics and general demeanor just irritate the hell out of me sometimes. I just can't get past how much of a colossal cunt he is. Which is strange, as I generally love musicians who act like utter arseholes.

I can happily listen to Oasis as most of the time it's not him you're hearing, it's just his guitar. As everyone knows, if Liam hadn't been around to sing his songs, we wouldn't be talking about Dwayne now.

I'd say After The Goldrush, On The Beach & Rust Never Sleeps will give you a good taste of Neil's different styles & are all great records.
You are in for a treat discovering all these great records for the first time. Basically anything he released up until 79 is great. Just avoid 'Journey Through the Past' as it's not a proper album and isn't worth bothering with. Everything else is golden.

Sound, thanks for the recommendations everyone, think I'll go and get After The Goldrush and On The Beach downloaded now then, listened to Decade again walking to and from work today and For the Turnstiles and Walk On seemed to be the standouts.
