Different sound, in fact different band. Produced by Steve Albini. Still average. No Way Barney it's BIG.

It's meant to be, but I find it pretentious and quite boring.

I've been listening to the wavves albums for the past few weeks.. first time I really every heard him/them.
Saw them on the cruise and they were good besides the singer being a drunken dick for a week.

Black Grape - Its Great When You're Straight...Yeah I love the Happy Mondays. Bummed is a top album, really unique record as well. Pills N Thrills... is an ultimate summer album that gets play on my stereo and in the car every year without fail. Hallelujah is a quality ep, and I've even heard the likes of Squirrel & G-man, Yes Please and Unkle Dysfunktional ('now that I am naked, I'm a laaay-daaay' ). I even bought the Playground Superstar single when they reunited for the 47th time. HOW. THE. FUCK. did I not get round to listening to this? I don't even know why I haven't before, it makes no sense. I've been listening to this album for about two weeks now and it might be the best thing Shaun Ryder's ever been involved with. Cannot believe I overlooked this. Oddly enough, I just heard this for the first time too, and agree 100%

Trying this right now, after seeing it on the top of RYM's 2012 chart You can read about it here www.popmatters.com/pm/review/154118-pepe-deluxe-queen-of-the-waveThe amalgam of sounds and possible references might be endless, but the truth is it makes the craftsmanship of let's say The Go! Team or Ariel Pink look like child's play. Very soon to say if I'll find it all worthy or simply overwhelming, but I'm gonna give it some spins.

Nice one Chrissie. It's the record that made me realise hip-hop is the bollocks. I didn't get it at all before that. Still one of my favourites. First record I've heard from him. Really good stuff in the same kind of style as Otis Redding & Sam Cooke. Few tracks between the end feel a bit throwaway but on the whole a really solid slab of early 60's soul.

Yo La Tengo - I Can Hear the Heart Beating as One I have never cared about this band and after trying this I don't think I will return to them unless something extraordinary points me in this direction. It's not bad by any means, it could probably grow on me, but I'm just not interested at all.

Forgot about this thread. Some stuff I've really enjoyed since my last post in this thread in February that I'm new to: Hank Mobley - Soul Station (1960) Been dipping my feet in the water with Jazz the past year or so. Some of it I'm not sure I'll ever get yet some really connects with me. Soul station hit the sweet spot, lovely record. Wilson Pickett - I'm in Love (1968)I'm yet to hear a album by Wilson Pickett which I've not absolutely loved. Just fantastic. I think he's overlooked due to him only being known for a handful of songs. Album wise I think with Al Green he's my favourite Soul artist. The Milkshakes - The Milkshakes' Revenge (1987) One of Billy Childish's earlier bands. The best Milkshakes record I've yet so far. Great garage rock with an early Beatles influence. Miles Davis - On the Corner (1972) When Miles got 'da funk. I think Jazz-fusion or funk is probably going to be the style of Jazz which I lean towards. Great record Jimmy McGriff - Electric Funk (1969) Another Jazz-funk /soul-Jazz record, really laid back & a wonderful listen. New Order - Technique (1989) Had heard this once or twice before but somehow had always neglected it in favour of 'Power, Corruption..' & Brotherhood. I think it's a little underrated in the New Order cannon. Great mix of dance & pop. Purple Image - Purple Image (1970) My favourite new record I've come across so far this year. Sort of Psychedelic Rock/Funk/Soul a guess along the same lines as Sly & the family Stone & Funkadelic. Well worth anyones time. The Shangri-Las - The Shangri-Las-65! (1965) I knew most the songs through a couple of compilations but had never heard this as an album before. Just fucking fantastic. Fela Kuti - Afrodisiac (1973) Am starting to dig into Fela's studio records. Before I'd only really heard the Black President compilation, superb.

In the last few weeks I've completely fallen in love with this: Wilco -Yankee Hotel FoxtrotJust the 12 years late, but it's really clicked with me massively. It's an album I have owned for years and had perhaps listened to 3 or 4 times over the years and it had never really done anything for me. Put it on again recently and it just clicked this time and i've listened to it constantly for the last few weeks. I suppose there isn't much too add about the album itself which hasn't already been said or reported on except that it's definitely one that needs time and constant repeat listens, a cliche I know, but it works better as a whole piece and should definitely be consumed in that fashion. The pacing is a marvel and the songs shine in that environment. Needless to say, I'll be digging deeper with Wilco in the coming weeks

Been listening to a lot of modern country type stuff the last week or so. Here are a few of the gems I've came across: Palodine - Garden of DeceitNot sure if they're a band or if it's just one singer, but, really enjoying them / her. Antic Clay - Hilarious Death BluesDark and moody with harmonicas. Some moment of real beauty, too. Lonsesome Wyatt & The Holy Spooks - HeartsickThis is creepy and terrifying but in the best possible way. This is one of their less creepy sounding tunes. Graveyard Train - HollowLove these. Their first album is more acoustic and bizarre but this, their latest one, is a bit more direct.

A couple more I've gotten into recently: Max Roach - Members, Don't Git Weary (1968) Mixture of Post-Bop & fusion. Fucking sweet Jean Knight - Mr. Big Stuff (1971) I was really surprised how fucking good this record was. I was under the impression she was no more than a one hit wonder with the song Mr Big Stuff but the whole album holds up as a classic piece of soul. Also, that artwork is killer.
