Kind of an extension of the what are you listening to & lastfm threads. Both of those are great but rarely does anybody actually talk about what they think of the records so they just become a listing game. So what records have people been trying out? Been trying out Tom Wait's debut Closing Time. I've only gotten into him since the start of this year & haven't heard any of his early material so this has been a different experience. Theres some great songs on here but also some moments which are very cheesey. Ice Cream Man isn't a million miles off sounding like michael buble For the most part it's pretty good. Kind of strange to hear him without the trademark voice & strange arrangements, it's pretty much straight up singer/songwriter material.

Always been a big fan of Closing TIme. Lovely record.
I've drunk alot of whiskey to that album late at night.
The only album I've heard for the first time this week is the latest Kurt Vile one. I'd heard good things but does anyone else think it is just average? Pretty dull in places and his voice gets a bit irritating.

It took me a while but I do like the record. I can't understand why it's gotten so much praise though it's not THAT good. I agree about the voice, I bet he can sing like a bird really, does feel a bit too cool for school tryhard vocally. Some good tracks on there like In My Time & Peeping Tomboy.
I think it may make the lower regions of my end of year list but you'll all just have to wait another 15 days for that!

Just listened to Evil Urges by MMJ for the first time last night. Aside from "I'm amazed", which is great, the rest of it did nothing for me. Saw them live at our big music festival over the summer and I remember almost none of it due being blindingly drunk, but I don't feel like I missed much.

Closing Time is a great record, it is also the only one I have heard from him besides the 80s trilogy and the latest one. I have had some dances to Ice Cream Man Today I've heard Forever Dolphin Love by Connan Mockasin, after seeing it praised in some 2011 lists. His music could be described like a childish T.Rex playing with Haunted Graffiti and making mellow wandering songs in an invented language. But it's actually quite more dull than that, didn't grab me at all. But original nonetheless.

Remember the days people would post album artwork for EVERYTHING, those were the days. Think Rod was in his train back then.

Not an album but saw for the first time the '68 Comeback Special by Elvis. The start is amazing, simply anthological. Besides that, the least prepared the better, although obviously some of it is too dated to judge. He seems to run through the big hits medley not very arsed, but he's a funny guy and pulls it out perfectly after all. And Jacko probably took note of it, but the fight part is quite surreal But it's when he shows his passion and his wonderful voice when it becomes spectacular. No script needed then. I particularly like this performance Rock'n'roll

Good in places but far too many skits & throwaway tracks make this feel very bloated.

My first real try of Springsteen so thought I'd start from the beginning & I'm really surprised by this. Never knew Blinded By The Light was his song. Some really wonderful imagery in his lyrics & pretty much strong songs from start to finish.

Nice, I've been getting into a bit of Sabbath in the past year or two. I've still only really heard Master Of Reality & Paranoid so need to check that out next.

Gave this a listen today because they have a name similar to Action Bronson and i'd downloaded it ages ago and never got round to listening to it. Really enjoyed it on first listen, some massive tunes on it.

^ Raveonettes B-sides & rarities. It really is wonderful. 27 tracks and almost all of them as good as anything on their LP's. If you are a fan of their albums you can't fail with this, it's like getting two new albums worth of material. Brendan Benson's first solo record from 96. Really not keen on this, the hooks are there and it's not a million miles away from what he'd do in the 00's but theres just something extremely irritating about the songs. His voice has an annoying tone to it on many tracks too. Joe Gibbs & The Professionals - African Dub Chapter Two I actually prefer this slightly to the first chapter. It's not full on dub, it's more like instrumental reggae with a bit of dub & some vocals on a few tracks but it's very hypnotic & makes me wish it was not winter.

I'm listening to Avi Buffalo's debut right now. Always thought I would hate it, but What's In It For has been inside my head since I heard it again some months ago and today seems the perfect moment for trying it. As I expected it's quite mellow but the songs are well constructed and it is having a soothing effect on me, which is welcome.
