Jorna, you would be happier if you accept that although most people are idiots, that's not a reason to spoil your experiences in a festival.
Karl, you're right, yeah. But I just hope your 18 self would have not twitted angrily about those bands you didn't know about.

Stone roses really arent headline material anyways. Headlining bands should play for something like 2 hours. Roses have enough good songs to fill the first hour. After that it's gonna be painful to everyone apart from the liam gallaghers in the crowdThey're the only one who matter, fuck the Vampire Weekend fans in their chinos and deck shoes.

Jorn is talking shit as usual. I had an amazing time seeing the Roses and can't wait to see them again in about six weeks, but they shouldn't be headlining Coachella. I don't blame fans in the States for not knowing who they are. They don't get played on the radio there, they're not remotely famous there, they screwed up getting big in the US even more than Oasis did, their last new material was in the mid 90s, out of the legions of bands out there how is your average US punter going to be exposed to their stuff? Most of the US fans who do like them are either the sort of Anglophiles who specifically is into British culture and music etc, or else they are big Smiths/Oasis fans and went looking for other famous Manchester bands.
Going by your argument why shouldn't My Bloody Valentine headline Glastonbury? After all they're massively influential and critically acclaimed, probably even more so than the roses. But obviously it would be ridiculous as not enough people know their stuff, that's not to say they don't belong on the line up or might not even be able to headline one of the smaller stages. Whereas I can accept that a band that I like a lot less but who more people like are definitely more suitable headliners.
Big festivals ought to be having headliners who a majority of the crowd are at least familiar with. I think that's a fair enough request for people to make, even though no doubt a lot of these people whinging about the Stone Roses are going to be dickheads by default. And given the lack of exposure the roses have had in the USA, and how long ago it was, it's completely fair enough that people won't know who they are.

I read in a magazine the Roses sold out Madison Square Garden in the early 90's but cancelled the gig because their management booked the gig without their knowledge

Yeah, but I think you're all missing one important thing here. Out of all those groups, how many are more expensive to book than the Roses? Does anyone seriously believe than 10 Japandroids (or any other Pitchfork hyped act) cost the same than the Roses? All the young lads will still go to see that band anyway, but both the organizers and the artists will prefer to highlight that order on the poster.

Just meant Pitchfork hyped acts are usually cheaper than your typical headliner, I used Japandroids as an example cos they were the alternative you proposed.

I don't think festivals are for you. Probably, but I had a great time at some festivals. Maybe I exaggerated a little but what I get really annoyed at is when people open their mouths because they don't know something. Like as if because they don't know a band or artist, that band or artist can't possibly be good, well known, or influential. I find it very normal that most people don't know a lot of bands/artists on festivals (neither do I) but if not go a) check them out or b) get wasted and be quiet about it. I don't mind people just going for fun either by the way, but it's not those people who are all over twitter or whereever acting like crybabies. Plus, when you didn't know Pavement etc. there was no internet so it was way harder for you to know them. Nowadays everyone who wants to can become familiar with a festival's line-up very easily.
