my choice then.... james chance and the contortions - buy (1979) www.mediafire.com/download/uw2nqir41jj/Buy.zipjust used google to find that link so not sure on tagging or quality but you cant find something suitable elsewhere im sure if that one is no good. this is an album i stumbled across a few years back and instantly clicked with me. they were part of the no wave scene in new york in the late 70s and this in my mind is their masterpiece. led by james chance on vocals and sax, this is a mixture of post punk, funk and jazz that clearly influenced the likes of the rapture and lcd soundsystem. musically challenging and interesting it manages to combine that perfectly with a sense of groove and funk to create something catchy yet a bit of a mindfuck at the same time. check it out, lets face it, even if you're not too fussed by it, it'll seem like a masterpiece compared to tucker's choice.

Nice choice JP, I remember seeing that you rated it highly on RYM so was curious to know what it sounded like.

I will review Tucker's choice within a week and then go on with JP's choice. There's still hope then that at least one other person will like it I'm doubtful, though.

Less than 10 days to go to give your thoughts on the James Chance record or receive the bad AIDS.
SRK, your choice is on the 15th.

Oh yeah, I was gonna review tucker's album this afternoon but because of the reviews I actually preferred doing to the dishes over reviewing that album. Will do soon though, in fact, both reviews (tucker & jp) will follow before Sunday.

Dunno, but he did a song with a spice girl. That has to count for something, right?

I sang 'summer of '69' with a cover band in galway one night. Only because everyone in the bar turned and looked expectantly at me when they started it. Because I'm Canadian, you know.
Those were the best days of my life.

Missing in action. 11: Shenandoah - ehi guys, sorry but recently I was asked by a local band to write a couple of tunes for them and I spent most of the month listening to the bands they like so I could understand how their genre works. I gave Denim a spin or two but it's not enough to have an idea. I promise I will catch up in the near future!

Been listening to the James Chance/Contortions record quite a bit over the past week or so. I know it's classed as No Wave, but for me it is very much Post-punk at heart. I tend to find with most Post-Punk records that I respect them more than I actually enjoy them. I dig the aggressive trashyness of The Contortions sound, but as a record everything starts to sound very similar after after a few songs. Overall, a record I wouldn't mind hearing a track or two from every once in a while but as a whole I don't think it's something I'll be returning to in a hurry. 6.5/10

My opinion on JP's choice:
Overall, I liked it. Some very interesting stuff going on and I can definitely see how LCD Soundsystem may have been influenced by them.
It's definitely musically challenging but sometimes, it was a little bit too much for my Virginmary's-loving brain. It just seemed a little all over the place with no real focus, but, maybe that was the point; to make a funky, jazz-inspired record while not giving a fuck about conforming to the norm. Unfortunately, it resuled in me sometimes losing interest.
As Mahoney says, it does start getting a little bit samey and everything kind of blends into one. Plus, none of the tunes really grabbed me.
But, it's definitely an interesting record, and I can appreciate it for what it is. I also don't see myself coming back to this one too often but if something comes on while I'm shuffling through my collection, I'm not gonna turn it off in a hurry.
6/10
