Two of my old people heroes, Neil Young and the who, put songs out today. (scratches head, thinking of a nice thing to say about either of them)...
Hey, it's great that they're still alive in 2014!

First listen to Foxygen and although I quite like what I hear and it's obviously hard to digest all of it in just one take, I think there's a lack of BIG tunes and the vibe is softer that I'd like. They're still masters at stealing and songcrafting, the production is pretty much spot on and it seems like you will still discover new details in a year. Probably more similar to their debut than to Ambassadors, which was more songy.

Too much shit leaking lately. Aphex Twin, 2 Prince records, Foxygen, Thom Yorke, Bass Drum Of Death, King Tuff & I'm gonna check out the new Marianne Faithfull record as Nick Cave & Ed Harcourt are involved.
Titchy, that Tom Hickox record is wonderful, one of my favs of the year for sure.

On first listen I'm not that excited, it's a good Weezer record but so was Hurley imo. I quite like Return To Ithaka just because it reminds me to Only In Dreams which is one of the best songs ever.

I like it a lot more than Hurley. Finally, they sound like Weezer again.
Speaking of trilogy which closes the album, the opening to the track Anonymous sounds like the theme tune from the American version of The Office.

btw I have this on my chest and I will say it before it's too late: new Spoon is good, but Kicks by The 1990s was better and nearly played in the same league.

Kicks by 1990s (no The, plz) is one of the best albums of the century, imo. A proper underground classic.

Foxygen record is shit. They've tried so hard to make this all over the place White album type record but they forgot to write hardly any decent tunes. It just turns out as a big unfocused mess.
Weezer is OK, I'm surprised all the love over the net that it's getting. Sure its probably the best record since Green, & the first since that where they've made a consistent record that actually sounds like Weezer - The problem is that Weezer nowadays lack any real energy in their tunes. Sure the hooks are still there but I think the problem is that Blue & Pinkerton were records that only young men could really have ,ade. When they try to play it a bit rougher & harder on here it feels really forced. No idea who produces their records now or who did them back in the day but they could really use a more live rougher side. I'm convinced that the demo's they would have recorded for this record would be miles better than how they turned out.
If this is the big return to form that everybody wanted from Weezer then I think I'm done with them TBH. Had Weezer not been so awful for so many years I doubt many would genuinely think this was any good.
Would still LOVE to see them do a Blue/Pinkerton back-to-back show.
