Those synths kill Fame and Fortune on first listen. Real shit synths. Shit. Carl is singing very well though and I like the chorus. Indeed, they are vile. Overall though, it's not bad is it, so much better than I was expecting. I tend to agree with most of Barny's comments, I think there are a couple of duds on it. I could live without Glasgow Coma Scale Blues at the moment. It's never going to be Up The Bracket and I wasn't expecting that, the songs we've already heard sit much nicer in the context of the album for me. I'm glad they haven't just tried to remake UTB and it works better being a bit slower and more mellow. I think the production works for the most part, it suits the slower tempo overall, the only one I would say is Fury of Chonburi would work better in that more chaotic production style of the early stuff, it feels a little stifled. Not absolutely blown away, but pleasantly surprised by it.

Carl's quite amped up on Dead For Love, isn't he?

Had a couple of listens, really like it.
As people have said, it's no UTB, but, it didn't need be. I really like how the album flows and the track that's took me most by surprise is The Milkman's Horse. Tune.

gave it a first spin this morning - better than i expected.
the opening two songs are a proper powerful combo and unfortunately the album doesnt quite live up to that start but its still streets ahead of the second album.
on first listen i'd rate it about the same as the last babyshambles album which i thought was really good.

It's nowhere close to the selftitled record tbh

I've listened to it about 4 times now and my thoughts are as follows:
Barbarians - Great opener, absolute banger. It's classic Libs. 9/10
Gunga Din - I liked it when I first heard it and it grew me a bit the more I listened. Chorus is really great. 7.5/10
Fame & Fortune - As shitty as those synths actually sound, I actually think it gives the tune an eeriness. It's also quite playful and whimsical. 6.5/10
Anthem For Doomed Youth - I like a lot of the lyrics in this and Carl sounds good. The chorus is a bit over-produced but it doesn't completely ruin it. 7/10
You're My Waterloo - Was worried about this but it's turned out pretty nicely. Pete sounds sincere and frail; it's lovely. 8/10
Belly Of The Beast - First track I was unsure of but it's grew on me. I'm sure I can hear some very feint, fuzzy synths in places? Anyway. it's decent. It's got a nice loose and care-free feeling to it. 6/10
Iceman - I like this once it gets going, it's just slow getting there. Could be a grower. 6/10
Heart Of The Matter - Musically, it sometimes reminds me of Morrissey/The Smiths then it all gets very Babyshambles in the chorus. It's good; I like it. 7/10
Fury Of Chonburi - Worst produced tune on the record. It's just so lifeless and flat. Shame because the song isn't terrible. If it was a bit more ramshackle and less produced, it would be far better. 5/10
The Milkman's Horse - Big fan of this. It reminds me of something but I can't put my finger on what. I just think it's very lovely and actually benefits from the cleaner production; one of the few tracks that does - 8/10
Glasgow Coma Scale Blues - The guitars in the chorus remind me of Hung In A Bad Place or something, and there is a bit in the build-up to the chorus (first heard around the 0:38 mark) where the melody is literally lifted from Boys In The Band. There's a break at around 1:56 which is cool. The chorus is catchy and fun. 6/10
Dead For Love - A sinister little number; conjures up images of dark and dingy streets lit by flickering street lights. The chorus brings an ever so slight sense of hope but then we're back into those dark and dingy streets. Carl is fantastic on it. I think it's another track which benefits from the production style. A great way to close the album. 8/10
Averaging out the rating of each track, I have the album down as a 7.1/10 right now which I think is a perfectly fair score. The album is far better than I thought it would be and it's clear they still have some magic between them. I hope Pete can stay clean and that they do another album because there's clearly still gas left in the tank.
Oh, and I really like the prominence of John's bass on a lot of the tracks. They've got him pretty high-up in the mix and it is definitely a benefit to the record.

The presence of the bass higher on the mix is definitely a noticeable improvement.

3 listens through and It's mostly a load of old shite. There's the odd witty line and couplet but majority of the lyrics are tired and forced, musically it's tedious and the whole self mythologising, autobiographical thing now just sounds self-indulgent where once it felt exciting.
For me the only songs i'd probably want to spend any more time with are Belly Of The Beast and Iceman
The opener is a nasty Jam cover. In fact I'm sure that melody in the chorus is lifted directly from a Jam song.
The cod reggae (ALL cod reggae) of Gunga Din is painful to listen to. But there are some ok lyrics and the chorus is half decent.
Fame and Fortune is the worst thing any of them have ever done.
Anthem for Doomed Youth- more clumsy embarrassing self indulgent twaddle.
You're My Waterloo- the original wasn't even that great (it really wasn't) this is worse.
Belly of the Beast- decent.
Iceman- not terrible.
Heart of the Matter- Jesus fucking Christ, this is fucking dreadful. I heard it described as Smiths-esque. Morrissey would die if he heard that
Fury of Chonburi- bang average
Milkman's Horse- "What you done? Get out my dreams you scum". Are these really the same boys that wrote Death on the Stairs, What a Waster and Good Old Days.
Glasgow....- a desperately cheap attempt to try and recreate the old sound
Dead For Love- alright until that beat comes in. Before then it almost captured the fragile prettiness of something like the acoustic lullaby sessions. But spoilt by trying to build to a crescendo and Carl's shouty angry vocal sounds out of place and forced. Shame, could've been a really nice song.
3/10
If anyone wants to buy my vinyl for £15 let me know. It's unopened.

The only reason to go to the electric ballroom was to hear UTB tracks played in a small venue
