Sorry, lets hear about the latest terrible gig you've been "dragged" along to, at least JP admits to his terrible choices!

Just saw Bill Callahan. Downgraded the venue as it's a fucking Tuesday in a meh city for this kind of music where and there is Champions League and it was quite expensive. He was joined by an Einstein haired drummer, a sax and a droning guitar. Not the biggest fan on record but really loved some bits of it, trance country 4 life.

Ryan Adams - Bristol Hippodrome Let's just start by saying he's not right in the head, seriously. He's a funny fucker though. 3 Hour set, by about song 5 my back was in bits as they were the smallest seats I've ever sat in EVER. It was also the quietest gig I've ever been to, you could literally hear a pin drop. It was so quiet I was paranoid the bird next to my was getting pissed off everytime i had a drink as me swallowing sounded like a plane taking off Not really a fan of his tbh, my mrs loves him though. He covered Some Might Say (the crowd actually laughed when he sang, The sink is full of fishes line) , due to a previous story about a sink. They obviously didn't realise the were the proper lyrics and thought he was taking the piss 6/10 for me. Too long. Maybe if my back wasn't in half I would have enjoyed more, and acoustic gigs are pants Setlist Oh My Sweet Carolina Ashes & Fire Everybody Knows 16 Days The Rescue Blues Gimme Something Good My Winding Wheel Dirty Rain Two New York, New York Answering Bell Dear Chicago Crossed Out Name To Be Without You Chris Lucky Now English Girls Approximately / Bristol Booger Eater Moon River Carolina Rain I See Monsters Am I Safe When the Stars Go Blue Firecracker Why Do They Leave? The Man In Me True Love Will Find You In The End Prisoner Walk in the Dark The End Jacksonville Skyline Some Might Say Lovesick Blues To Be Young (Is To Be Sad, Is To Be High)

sleeper at norwich arts centre last night
it was billed as "an intimate evening with..." i was hoping this meant the opportunity to get real intimate with louise wener, who despite being old enough to be my mum still looks great, but all it really meant was an acoustic gig and q and a at the end.
sleeper have really grown on me now that i'm a sad act who listens to nothing but britpop and ladrock so it was great to finally hear all the HITS live. due to the stripped back nature it was slightly shambolic but they came across as a really nice bunch of people and the whole thing felt very intimate like they were just playing and having a chat in your living room. TOP NIGHT

Peter Doherty at Norwich Waterfront last night.
Just him and an acoustic with occasional accompaniment by his dog who would periodically walk on stage. Fairly short set of just over an hour but smashed through a load of Libertines and Babyshambles classics. Enjoyable night.

Gaz Coombes at Norwich Waterfront last night
Surprised at how good this was. Last time I saw him it was just him and an acoustic but the full band this time were really impressive. Sound was fucking great too, everything real loud but clear as well. The new album remains one of this year's highlights.

Big Thief yesterday - The first 30 minutes or so were probably up to the best live moments in the last 5 years, simply mesmerizing. I've never been the biggest fan but their double album from last year really got me in and the show felt like witnessing a top band at their best moment. Amazing musicians simply enjoying themselves and acknowledging their potential while being thankful at the same time.

It was still great but that level was unsustainable. Plus I wanted to go to the bathroom

black lips @ heaven with popular forum member krburg.
Forgot how much I love them. Lots of classics, the country tinged new stuff worked well in the set to. God bless them still going at it in 2023. October & the eyes supported, seen them before, dogshit posers. Joanie opened, was ok.

Friday night at St Pancras Old Church with popular forum member KRBURG. Wonderful tiny church which I've never been to before that only seats about 60 people, though they let a lot more in. Clementine March opened, was kinda a double bill so she did perhaps an hour set. Was nice. Tapir! headlined, it was really beautiful. Very excited for when they finally do an album. Ended doing a duet of total eclipse of the heart with Clementine March + choir. Lovely night. Saturday went to see Billy Childish down in Maidstone, which despite being in Kent I don't think I've been to since I was a child. Gig was in Studio 6, a former studio that was used for CATCHPHRASE, apparently. Was a weird crowd, usually you find people travel to see him but this was part of Maidstone Fringe festival so it felt like a lot of people just took a punt on seeing a rock band for the night. The DJ when we got there was playing the broadest "indie" music, Arctic Monkeys, Coldplay & White Stripes so not much of an atmosphere, & a lack of the regular Billy obsessives and oddballs you usually find. first he performed with the singing loins doing an hour set of folk songs, lovely stuff. Then everyone went out to the bar for a drink/piss and he came back on like 5 minuets later with CTMF and just broke into Davy Crockett in an empty room Everyone came flooding back in & they played a (for him) mammoth 90+ minute set. They've done a handful of gigs in recent months and of course it's still rough around the edges & they're never going to be a well oiled machine, but the fact they've got into the knack of playing again it certainly felt like a more confident gig than what I've been used to in recent times. Billy had borrowed a guitar which he used for the entire night (sounded awesome, a firebird popular forum member krburg tells me!), never once tuning up which saved a lot of time & they just seemed to be really enjoying themselves. One of my favourite times seeing him/them, you could feel the spirit of Roy Walker in the building.

Yesterday, a couple midday shows by the sea. Los Jaguares de la Bahia is the latest project of big indie musician and produced and all around madman Paco Loco, they were fine but a bit early for the crowd probably. Perro were quite great, I sprained my ankle pogoing though.

Ouch, glad to hear that you still have the pogo function though. A few gigs I've been to recently I thought perhaps I'd lose it and jump in for some pogo action (black lips especially) but my brain is now saying no. Hopefully my brain will prevent me from ever crowdsurfing again, especially since Columbia Rocks Man dropped me last summer.
/ Old Man Mahoney out.

I have not participated in any of that since the last time I saw weezer and a friend convinced me to go down in the front. A crowd surfer kicked me in the head and my first thought was “I don’t like these guys enough to get kicked in the head for.” And my second thought was was.”I don’t like ANYONE enough to get kicked in the head for.”
You don’t get that at Gordon lightfoot, let me tell you!

Dunno, it depends on the type of crowd and the booze and shit. TBH judging by Benicassim and my Oasis shows from ages ago, British people are really another thing and it's not even pogoing, it felt more like a fucking rhino estampede or something.

The Beatnuts, last night at Rotondes, Luxembourg.
I was surprised to see this pop up. We don't see much Hip Hop here.
Warm up was provided by a local beatboxer and regional MCs. It was all a bit embarrassing. The beat boxer was a scrawny white kid that kept calling everyone motherfuckers and cunts in Luxembourg accented English, like he thought that's what a hip hop artist should do. It was awkward and embarrassing, but his skills were OK.
The Beatnuts played for over 2 hours and the set got gradually less tight and coherent as it went on, unsurprisingly as they were knocking back booze like there was no tomorrow and a couple of joints were lit and passed around the stage two. Which is a bit of a shame as they were tight as fuck for the first hour and the "hits" came later. I ducked out at 2 hours as they hadn't even gone off for the encore by that time and the crowd had thinned out too.
Glad to have seen them and would probably catch them again for an hour long festival set.
6/10

I saw the other day that The Beatnuts were touring. Bizarrely they seem to only be doing one UK date and it's in Newcastle. Cool you got to see them though

A few gigs I've been to recently I thought perhaps I'd lose it and jump in for some pogo action (black lips especially) but my brain is now saying no. / Old Man Mahoney out. lol this didn't age well. Black Lips did a last minute / end of uk tour show at some tiny storage lockup place at the back of millwall's ground Monday night so I went along with popular forum member KRBURG. When they broke into family tree I fucking lost it. Gig was sensational, the perfect tiny shithole to see a band like Black Lips. Children of the pope supported, a band I have been championing! Unfortunately they've got a few new RAWK tunes that sound like a cross between Status Quo and fucking Jet. Still, when they do their black lips does Motown style shit it's great. Joanie supported, she opened the other night too... was ok.
