Shabaka Hutchings at Hackney Church with popular forum member KRBURG. This was a performance of Coltrane's A Love surpreme & billed as Shabaka's final ever show on Saxaphone. Annoyingly this gig was originally supposed to be at the ICA, a much smaller venue. The Church with the stalls removed is pretty damn big. Luckily the sound was decent, I'd seen Black Midi there during Covid and the acoustics were some of the worst I've ever heard. Gig was of course excellent, Shabaka when he got to really show his chops on Sax was phenomenal. Was just a shame about the venue, it was overcrowded & hard to see much + I was absolutely shattered. I feel like the gig just passed me by, could have been something really special had it been at a all seated venue.
Mozart Estate @ The Lexington Mozart Estate is Lawrence of Felt & Denim fame. This is a somewhat continuation of his Go-Kart Mozart project. I saw them support Jarvis Cocker many years ago but didn't know much about Lawrence at the time. There's been a pretty cool documentary about him released recently which is worth a watch. Bruno & the Outrageous Methods of Presentation were supposed to open but pulled out which I was a bit gutted about. I did consider blowing this gig out as Holly Golightly was performing a rare (these days anyway) TCOTU show. So glad I went though. A guy who performs as Turtle Boulevard opened & I dug it. He's cut from the same cloth as the likes of Adam Green & Jeffrey Lewis, a quirky storyteller. Was nice, be interested to hear an album of those songs. Mozart Estate was so much fun. Absolutely ridiculously catchy pop/rocknroll tunes. Lawrence is a don & his band really helped bring those anthems to life. Probably only played for like 50 minutes but what a 50 minutes it was. Very glad I went

Fucking shame about the venue for Shabaka and a bit short sighted of the organisers to not think this would be a bug deal that people would be interested in.
With a bit of thought it could've been at TCOTU Jazz Festival at the Barbican- or at least put on at one if those venues- Queen Elizabeth Hall or Royal Festival Hall even.

Ocean Colour Scene at Norwich UEA tonight.
Last Time I saw them was 2004. Its fair to say Simon Fowler has aged a bit in that time He looks fucking AWFUL. Obese with a slightly glazed look on his face and needed a stand with the lyrics on despite them playing the exact same set each night for a good 20 years.
The voice is still there though and I forgot what a good voice he's got tbh. Set had some real high points but there was about 3 duff tracks in a row second half which killed my vibe somewhat. A geezer behind me spend the entirety of those 3 tunes shouting LIVEN UP over and over again though so at least I wasn't on my own in feeling that way.

plaid at norwich arts centre tonight.
annual lads night out christmas piss up so we thought we'd catch some electronica from the warp records alumni. i've dipped in and out of plaid's stuff over the years but can't consider myself to be a superfan. this was good though, decent visuals and an additional live guitarist that helped matters.
done with gigs now til 2024.

DOSS @ The Hug and Pint, Glasgow
Shouty Glaswegian punks meet Sleaford Mods. I’ve enjoyed their recent singles, they take the piss out of Glasgow and local ponces, it’s good fun even if their targets can be a bit obvious. Live, they are fucking carnage. First club-sized gig I’ve been at in a while where shit has properly kicked off. It was an absolutely belting show tbh. Ironically, most of the crowd was the kind of Glasgow scenesters they profess to hate. Great teems. 9.

The Go! Team at Norwich Waterfront last night.
20th anniversary show for the debut album so they performed it in full with an encore of other assorted "hits". Couldn't believe it when I realised it had been 13 years since I last saw them live. The band has changed personnel since then but the Ninja/Parton duo remains at the forefront. Ninja was an energetic force as always. Parton I found quite annoying with his playing up to the crowd and big rockstar poses.
Memorials supported who are a two piece featuring the frontwoman from Electrelane and the guy who plays guitar for the current incarnation of Wire. They were pretty interesting. Lots of instrument swapping as a two piece and we had programmed beats, live sax, a drum machine, live drums, live keys and live guitar all involved. The weird thing was the songs all wildly differed from one another. The started with an instrumental drone type track then did a tune that was more of a straight up indie pop song with slight c86 vibes. There was also a couple of jazz tunes though featuring just sax and drums that were really good then a tender guitar ballad that sounded almost Nico esque before they ended on another drone that had a slow build until the finish was almost slightly ravey. I think some of the crowd were pretty baffled but I enjoyed it and despite all the different sounds they pulled off all well. I just don't think I've ever seen a band who sound so different from tune to tune before.

Pink Turns Blue, last Friday at le Molotov, Marseille. Post-punk/dark wave from Germany and the 80s. They have a bunch of great songs (they pretty much played my playlist, which was nice). 8/10

Slowdive at Norwich UEA tonight
10/10 fucking incredible. I felt fucking old though. Had no idea just how huge they were with teenagers now. Most of the crowd was slightly goth looking 18 year olds.
Whitelands supported. One of those bands on Sonic Cathedral who sound like a 3rd rate Slowdive or Ride. Album is out Friday and I'll give it a go but the sound was fairly weak live. Singer has a pony voice and even worse onstage patter. A few songs in they even asked "what do you think of us so far then?" Was really embarrassing.

The Zutons at Norwich Waterfront tonight.
Had kinda regretted getting a ticket for this the last few days but ended up having a really good time. One of those bands where I'd forgotten just how many big tunes they have. A few lulls where they dropped new tunes but overall a solid gig.

Nadine Shah at Rough Trade East tonight
7 song stripped back set to promote her new album. I get why it hasn't clicked with all but I love the new album so really enjoyed hearing the tunes live. This set up really highlighted how powerful her vocal is and what brilliant control she has over her voice.
A popular forum member was in attendance.

Seems I'm the only one who bothers to post in this thread anymore. I shall keep on going though. Forever!
Yard Act supported by Gustaf at Norwich UEA tonight.
Quite like the tunes I'd heard by Gustaf. Remind me of a female fronted LCD Soundsystem and I'd even added them to the infamous soapy playlist. They were pretty good live but definitely had something annoying about them that tainted things. Reminded me of Bodega a bit in that respect.
I'm really not sure on the new Yard Act album but no doubting they can still pull it off live. They've managed the transition to the bigger venues seamlessly and the addition of live sax and treacles on backing vocals didn't feel out of place.

LG + JS - Wolverhampton Let's start..... 4 hour drive in rush hour, fucking nightmare. (For less than an hour set! ) The gig itself was pretty good tbh, Liam's voice was fucking superb, unfortunately most people (by the looks of it) went there to hear Oasis/Roses songs, they seemed bored through the whole thing. Just Another Rainbow, Mars To Liverpool and Raise Your Hands went down great though, crowd seemed up for these, prob havent bought the album to know the others I thought it was class though, some of the songs I hate on the album were great live. Jake Bugg was alright too Another 3 hour drive ... Home around 1:30, up at 6 for work. Hardcore 8/10 3/10 for the drive

Gaz Coombes at Norwich Arts Centre tonight.
Just him solo this time as opposed to with the band like I saw him last year. Nice to hear different arrangements of the solo songs and he chucked in Moving near the end which is always great to hear.
Irish folk singer Oisin Leech supported. I quite enjoyed his album that came out the other week but he was loads better live. A really captivating set.

The Jesus & Mary Chain @ St Luke’s
Club show in Glasgow ahead of their UK tour. I must have seen them a dozen times by now but never in a venue this small. They played the usual greatest hits, plus a few new ones. Have to say the material from their Damage & Joy comeback album stands up really well - All Things Pass in particular was banging. They finished with their usual extended version of Reverance, which was worth paying the £40 for alone. It sounded epic. William Reid is one of the all time great rhythm guitar players. He still cannie play lead, mind. 8.

No idea m8, we wandered in for kick-off. My hearing is shot to pieces, not wasting my dying ears on support bands.
