it should have been the greatest night of music in my life. the stars had alligned and one of my favourite people, let alone singer songwriters, was doing an early gig at cafe oto. curfew was advertised as 8.30pm and he even tweeted saying he will be done in time for people to get to ride at the roundhouse later that evening who just so happen to be one of my favourite bands.
it was all looking perfect until a few days ago cafe oto sent an email with the stage times and ryley was now due to finish at 9pm instead of 8.30pm. bit of a pain in the arse given its a 30min journey between venues and ride were on at 9. it meant things didn't go quite as seamlessly as i'd hoped but it was still a great night.
ryley was good but definitely the worst time i've seen him. i miss those heavy jazz psych shows with the full band tbh. the acoustic stripped back numbers are still good but seeing him with the band was something else.
shot off to the roundhouse and got there just as twisterella was playing. fairly happy with that timing really all things considered as most of what came beforehand was new stuff. ride smashed it as always. one of my favourite live acts. we had a lovely view from up on the balcony too. spent all of about 10 seconds in the seat and then found a lovely standing area with loads of space. will deffo aim for that in the future at the roundhouse and downstairs can feel a bit packed in.

ryley walker with popular forum member JP. The bloke from ultimate painting opened, kinda boring. Ryley walker was wonderful, tho his bantz is even better.
Then I was DRAGGED against my will to Ride. Pulled some big power moves on the balcony. Worth it for Taste alone.

Riley Walker sounds like a busy little cunt. Should not be welcome in Norwich again. Not for me.

PJ Harvey in Montreal the other night. First off, this show was in a 10,000 seat hockey arena, so the vibe was just...weird, for a start. She should be playing in theatres or large clubs with atmosphere, not some cavernous arena with no soul. Anyway, she started by playing the whole new album, which admittedly sounds better live, but I still don't entirely get. Then the band did 'the colour of the earth' without her, which was great. The 2nd half was chock full o'hits, but it just never hit the heights of the other time I saw her (in 2017). This was definitely of the 'good, not great' variety. 7/10

wtf that is insane. She did do a big outdoor TCOTU show this summer, but the actual tour for the album was just at the roundhouse so 3,500 people.
New album is an intimate kinda deal too so definitely suited to smaller venues. Still surprised she can pull those sort of numbers in Canada. There isn't going to be a venue big enough for Oasis when they come over!

Last time she was here in 2017, she did 2 nights at metropolis, which holds about 2500 people. She's doing 2 nights at history in toronto, which is about the same. No idea why the booker put her in the rink in Montreal.

What a weird place for her to play. Was it sold out? I was just looking and upcoming gigs for that place is like Kings of Leon, Vampire Weekend etc.

I don't think it was sold out, but it was pretty full. The "do we stand or sit?" vibe was really weird, since the floor was seated and not GA. Nick Cave is playing there next april, but it's the half-arena setup and the floor is GA. That might be better.

Hey Fuzzy
did you know that the controversial love-him-or-hate-him leaker of Heathen Chemistry messiah Rollinice's name is pronounced Roll In Ice rather than Rolli Nice?
He'll always be Mr Nice to me.

I will not be buying a ticket to see PJ Harvey on Rollinice, I know that much.

Dee C Lee @ Koko
Emma Noble (not that Emma Noble) opened, really nice. Musically a bit Gil Scott-Heron in spots with some vocal acid jazz/soul jazz kinda stuff thrown in.
Leah Weller was on next. She had another Weller child on keys and Cradock on guitar. TBH it was kinda boring. She's got a strong voice, but it isn't my thing at all.
Dee C Lee was very good. I was a little disappointed as they'd made this big thing about Steve White being in the band & that Mick Talbot was going to join the band so I was expecting a Style Council section of the set but Talbot only played on 2 songs with the only Style Council song being The Paris Match. Still, the gig was pretty damn good. A few of the slower ballads got a bit erection section but the upbeat material was great. The guy she had on electric keys was phenomenal. They did No Time to Play which I've known for years from Guru's Jazzmatazz record yet I had no idea it was Dee C Lee on vocals. It was phenomenal, basically a repeated chorus but after each time a different member of the band got to show off a little, it was superb. Cool gig, glad I went even if I was secretly hoping for Style Council tunes or even a guest spot from Weller for one of the acts.

The Blackbyrds at Union Chapel on Friday.
Pretty terrible. Judging by the line up there were only two original members. Maybe three. And everyone else (there’s about ten of them on stage) were way too young.
As a result it was like karaoke version. I think it was their first gig in a while too.
Plus, Union Chapel, despite its aesthetic appeal is an awful fucking venue. Unless you queue at doors (6:30pm for this) you have no chance of a decent pew. And the sound anywhere other than sitting in the middle is terrible. Like, the worst I’ve heard. And no beers in the church either. Only the bar.
3/10

I love Union Chapel, though most of what I've seen there has been acoustic or stripped down. Plus I've always got there early to avoid the problems you had The Vaselines Saturday at The Moth club with popular forum member KRBURG attending his 1000th gig! 14 Iced Bears were the support. They opened with a jangly number & I thought they was going to be a perfect warm-up but unfortunately almost all their songs were really bad. Vaselines delivered. Could have done without six songs from V for Vaselines, but when they delivered the original tunes it was pretty banging. Francis never ages, she's surely a vampire.

I went to Union Chapel once, it was an acoustic gig, and I was sat about 5 rows back so pretty good. Only down side, as you said, no beers. They were serving Tea FFS

no beer? ffs im never visiting that venue. EVER!
i saw Tapir! at Norwich Arts Centre on Wednesday night.
Great to finally hear the tunes from the album live. Man I love that album. Only played for 45 mins which felt a bit short tbh. It's a good job the tunes are so good though as the band and crowd looked like a bunch of fucking geeks. Pretty sure I was the only person in the room to have had sex in the last 5 years.

Norwegian band Flunk in Marseille in a bar and then near Lyon, at a party for a friend's 50th birthday. Didn't know them before, even the Blue Monday cover, but I didn't mind seeing them twice in a row. They have good songs and they sound very good.
