Went on a whim with a couple friends to see Idle Warship last night (Res & Talib Kweli) and they were fucking incredible. Its basically a hip hop/R&B hybrid with a live band. Amazing band and it was a great crowd. I had a lot of fun. I also had never been to the venue before (BB Kings in Times Square) and I was really impressed with the place as well. Drank a shitload of Hennessey for the first time in my life and got absolutely destroyed I have had it many times before, but not quite at that volume. Kweli did a cover of Gil Scott Heron's "The Bottle" that was excellent.

wu tang clan @ the forum, TCOTU
it was good, method man and ghostface killah are stars, but it wasn't on the level it was when i saw 'em a couple of years ago. still, i had a mosh around to cast-iron classics like triumph, chessboxin, shimmy shimmy ya etc usual annoying hip hop habit of cutting great songs short but it was fun. was always lovely to meet up with karl and kev too.
7/10

I went to see The Chameleons at this local venue tonight. Still clueless as to why they never made it big...

Isle Of Wight Festival Pulp were the best band of the weekend. As i've said in the Glastonbury thread Jarvis was on top form, they performed the songs brilliantly and the crowd loved it. In my top 5 gigs ever. Highlights for me were Do You Remember The First Time, E's and Wizz, I Spy and This Is Hardcore. Seriously, if you can catch them, don't miss them. I'll be seeing them at T and hopefully Glasto, don't care who they clash with. Kasabian were also brilliant with Tom on top form and I thought the crazy weather added to the atmosphere. Liked Velociraptor as well. My favourite Kasabian gig out of the 4 times ive seen them. Beady Eye were very good and Liams jacket was fucking crazy. Also funny hearing the haters constantly shout "Liam you wanker" all gig as he stood there oozing all the attitude of a proper rock star. He looked the bollocks I though. Sounded great as well. Wigwam was a highlight. He jumped down to the crowd and stopped at some lad in a Man City top and they hugged, it looked like the Citeh fan was nearly crying Not big on the Foo Fighters but they were brilliant live I must say. Very impressed. Kings Of Leon very disappointing. They started of well with Four Kicks, The Bucket and Spiral Staircase before going off into loads of the new shite which made the gig drag and Caleb looked bored with shit banter. They actually look like they enjoy playing the old stuff so much more but put loads o fthe new stuff in cos they have to. Its fucking crap. The old stuff was still enjoyable but with them not arsed and poor sound it was not great. Watched Tim Burgess and Mark Colling in a flood and it took me a while to recognise some of the songs. Came accross really well though and enjoyed it although Tim looked like a ponce holding an umbrella while he had a ponytail while the rest of the crowd were drowning. Caught Iggy Pop as well, Dave Grohl went on stage at one point dancing about. Seen some of the fucker of shit Boy George on the Thursday playing some covers, Plan B, and one or two others. Couldn't get in to see the Manics after Kasabian, the weather was mental so it took ages to walk through the mud and the Big Top was rammed with Manics fans and people staying out of the rain so only seen Motown Junk, If You Tolerate This and You Love Us from outside the tent. Overall a great weekend with mad weather. Sunburnt on Saturday, floor on Sunday making me leave my tent and sleeping bag behind. Phone ran out of battery and was too late to charge it on Sunday so had to stay up all night on Sunday to catch a 6.30am bus back to Newcstle on Monday with no alarm or clock. Had to ask randoms. Far too many people on site for the size of it though. Not well organised either, the stewards and staff were useless. Met some good people though and had a great time. Weather fucking crazy

Pains of Being Pure at Heart in Manchester - 5/10
Liked a few songs before but went along with friends. It sounded just like big mess of guitar and bass to me with the vocals way too quiet in the mix, so I guess most of the score is for the sound on the night (I guess, partially the venue's fault). It's a shame as they had some really nice bright guitar sounds on the album and it was all lost in a mess of noise.

Pains of being pure at heart @ Soundcontrol Manchester pains - 8/10, Really enjoyed it, don't agree either that the guitar sounded messy as I thought it was pretty clear especially given that they have a sort of fuzzy sound anyway. They got a great reaction from the crowd with people crowd surfing and stuff which was unexpected. fanzine - 5/10. Quite liked there style of music, sort of like a cross between weezer and pavement but they had some bad problems with there equipment which ruined it. other band - 3/10. Songs weren't that bad but the singer was an abberation who deserves death. Parklife Festival @ Platt Fields, Manchester Fake blood 8/10 Boys Noize 8/10 Modeselektor 6/10 These 3 dj's were in a row and were pretty amazing, modeselektor were last on so i'd lost concentration at this point so it's hard to judge. Especially given the state I was in. Mount Kimbie 6/10 Good tunes (the more electro end of dub step, with mongy keyboards and 'tin) but a bit too quiet, will definately check them out more though. Unfortunately due to the fact that it was freezing cold, rained all day and I was on one of the worst come downs of my life, I missed day 2, which had Metronomy and DJ Shadow

Horrors last neet, Manchester Academy 3: Really, really good. Played five songs off Primary Colours and five or six new ones (including Still Life). All the new stuff sounded superb, and was great to see them in such a small venue. Sea Within a Sea was massive as always. 9/10

My review of Glasto can, obviously, be found in the thread of the same name.
Last gig I went to before the big event was to see popular forum member Blain play with his new band, Soho Dandy at Capitol in the Gla. He's posted a few tracks on the forum before, which I reccomend you check out if you have not already done so.
I honestly can't stress enough how good they were. Not in a 'oh it's a mates band and they sound vaugely half-decent' kinda way, I mean they are a properly good outfit, the kinda band you see supporting someone else and think 'fuck me, they were amazing!'. Blain is a star. His voice is strong, soulful and distinct. The band are as tight as MatheyzzjkekwZKW when it comes to paying a debt. They deserve to be playing away from shitholes like Capitol - which they will be soon. 'Baby's Got a Temper' is one of my favourite songs of they year, by anyone. 9.

Ryan Adams @ Concertgebouw, Amsterdam 10/10 What a man, a review wouldn't do his performance justice. Never been to the Concertgebouw before as it's mainly for classical music but what a concert hall, incredible acoustic. Only negative thing about the Concertgebouw is Paul McCartney sung about it in one his songs

Fucking gutted I didn't get tickets for one of his TCOTU gigs. Watched video footage of a gig in Oslo & it looked amazing, like when he was good. Before I spunked over 100 quid on seeing him do rubbish gigs.

Yeah, you really missed out on something. I consider myself quite a die hard Ryan Adams fan but I had never seen him (he doesn't come to the Netherlands too often, last time was 4 or 5 years ago and I couldn't go then). I was quite cynical going to the gig as for example you but also people I know IRL said his gigs can be pretty shit at times. But yesterday was just pure magic. Had Laura Marling doing the support, she did pretty good I thought (I had never heard anything by her, not a huge fan of women singing) but Ryan was just perfect. Hope someone bootlegged it ffs

Robert Plant and the Band of Joy - 6.5/10 Don't particularly love zeppelin, bar a few songs, and I really liked the album he did with Allison Krauss a few years ago. This was...meh. Though he did go gallow's pole in the encore, which is one of the few zeppelin songs I like.
Elvis Costello - 8.5/10 Didn't bring his spinning wheel setlist maker thing, but who cares? He brought the tunes. Great show.

I guess I was the only one from here who saw ryan at the barbican! When I got the tix I was a bit annoyed he announced the sunday gig after the presale finished since I had to take a day off work. Turned out to be the best one of the two Ryan was in a great mood and very chatty. Had never seen him without a backing band so was expecting it to be more shambolic. He did come out during the encore wearing a long black hooded robe and played a few lines of orion-like songs, was hilarious 8/10

Saw LEE MAVERS on Saturday night at a random pub in Glasgow.
Only got announced the night before on the venue's website, didn't even get listed on the La's Facebook. He came on stage about 10, just him and a guy on electric bass. Call me biased, but the pair of them sounded fucking amazing. His voice is a bit rougher these days, but he could still hold the notes no sweat. They were flawless, probably as Lee has made them rehearse every day for the past three years. It was about a million times better than when I saw them play T in the P six years ago. New songs? Don't be silly. 9.
