The National album is quite good.
Looking forward now to the new Whitney album as the two songs I've heard from it so far have been good and the dude from Foxygen produced it.

Some good releases recently. Especially Purple Mountains. There’s surely no better lyricist than David Berman.
Also loving the Ada Lea album. I guess you could label it Alternative Pop. Dense and layered and slightly twisted, with hooks.
The Jesca Hoop album is as good as it should be.
And the Bedouine album is utterly beautiful.

The new 7” Ep from TERRY I predictably love
Gave that purple mountains record a few goes, the lyrics are interesting but musically I found it forgettable

I just re-listened the 2 'new' singles from Tame Impala, because well, it's a band I really like. I know I heard them twice or so but I couldn't remember a single second from them. They're watered down versions of the sound he was using on Currents, and although I guess they will surely grow on me once the album is released, my expectations have been reduced quite a bit.
I'm saying all this because I consider him still an artist on the rise, but then I've realized the debut is nearly 10 years old and by that point (pick-a-band) was releasing (pick-a-shit-record) so, yeah, time flies by. Specially now that there's usually a 4-5 years gap between records.

That Billy Ryder Jones release, Yawny Yawn, is beautiful. Basically his last album but reimagined and with vocals and piano only.

No good albums in August then?
Been listening to the slightly unfortunately named 'Rose of the West' album which is dark dream-poppy goodness.

Big fan of the new Bon Iver. Can't make my mind up about the Ty Segall record, it's gonna need some listens.

Bz’s the new Whitney is tasty.
Debut is better but damn this one got some songs on it. Only thing I don’t like is Rolling Blackout didn’t make it on the album and I think that is their best song.

I can get why they left it out, FTA is more somber and constrained. Anyway the arrangements are still gorgeous but I wonder if they were right following this path, Max could definitely get more licks to shine. Still first listens so...

Big fan of the new Bon Iver. Yeah, I think it’s ok, I’ve not really liked anything since his debut, so was quite surprised by this. I’m loving the new Lana Del Rey album, I’ve never clicked with any of her albums before, but liked the odd song here and there, but this new album sounds fantastic. Proper hazy, late summer, feel too it.

takes me a while with bon iver, still adjusting to the newie.
agreed about lana de rey, this is definitely her springboard to the next level. by rights, it should be quite dull and forgettable but the songwriting is super strong on this. didn't think she had it in her, fair fucking play.

Yeah, i've always felt a little detachment from what she has done, it always felt like average songwriting was cloaked in these layers of production guff, but every now and then she'd land a banger, but album wise, just always felt swamped by the production.
NFR feels really in your face, the vocals are right up in the mix and aren't treated too much and the production feels very nuanced and adds genuine weight to the songs. Some fantastic lyrics as well.

Logged on to say similar things about the LDR album. I think it's pretty much a masterpiece. Not said lightly.
I'm about 5 listens through and it still has big production but perhaps more overall substance than the previous records (although I really love Ultraviolence too).
I also think she's always had smart lyrics, but there's more edge here, perhaps mirroring the feeling of what's going on in the states right now.
But the production, songwriting, lyrics and delivery kind of come together in a perfect storm here.
It'll be hard to knock this off the end of year top perch.
It helps that i'm in California at the moment too.
Just shelled out €100+ for a ticket to see her in Amsterdam in the spring. Hope I don't regret it.
