I listened to the bravenous LP a few weeks back and yeah it's pretty good.
Not been in a hip-hop mood too much this year so have been a bit slack so far but got a few others on my list to check out.

Giving that Arcade Fire album a go this morning and actually enjoying it. It's obviously not as good as Funeral or even Neon Bible, but it seems pretty decent.

Had a listen this morning while the kids are breakfast, seemed really bloody good tbh. New Kevin Morby today as well which I'm looking forward to.

Gonna bring a new regular post which I will do twice and then forget.
It's Mahoney's 1ST THOUGHTS FRIDAY'S
Kendrick... very underwhelming. It's fucking long, so I need to spend time, but there was some embarrassing shit on there & not enough of Kendrick doing what he does best, just going hard. I'll stick with it, but man, nothing hit me as hard as the song he dropped earlier in the week.
The Smile, why isn't this a Radiohead record? Answer, because Sam says one of them has bumhole cancer. It sounds like the record they would have made in around 2005 inbetween Thief & In Rainbows. Dig it
Kevin Morby was.. alright. I do quite like him but I'm not sure how much I'm gonna care.
Spread Joy's second record, 10 frantic post-punk bangers in 17 minutes. Love it.

Kendrick hit me in a big way straight off.
Was daunted by the length but it didn't feel too long when listening. Some of the biggest and most raw bars he's put together so far. Production wise it hit the mark too. 2 listens in now and it's a stunner.
The Smile record is great, but was just a tad underwhelming. Expectations were super high.
I expect with a little time it'll be a favourite. And seeing the songs performed live will add a dimension
I had half an hour with Kevin Morby and liked what I heard. To be revisited tomorrow

Well a couple more listens of Kendrick and it's a staggering piece of work.
His complete openness on some of the subject matter and his ability to point out his own faults seems pretty uniqiue for someone operating in that world and with a platform that size.
In a way it reminds me of Channel Orange or Scum Fuck Flower Boy.
This is up there with TPAB for me and better than Damn (why did Damn get the Pulitzer and not TPAB?).
I reckon people will look back at this as one of the great hip hop records of all time.

It was sounding better to me on second visit. Still think there’s some complete tripe on there too but I’ll stick with it
The great thing about the new exciting series MAHONEY’S FIRST THOUGHT FRIDAYS is how everyone can see me eat my words a few days later each week
I will refer to it as FFF, because I know the spelling issue will disturb SRK.

Quite like the FFF idea, I'll try to contribute with Barny's Music Early Hearings or MEHs
I've decided I'm skipping the 2 big ones from this week, what I've heard is just ok and I'm not the biggest fan so not really arsed. Funny fact: saw them both at Coachella.
On the other hand (and I can understand people shaking their heads at this point), The Black Keys one seems... a decent Black Keys record. It's exactly what you expect from them at this point, but slightly better than their recent ones. Just a good Sunday bbq Nashville thingy.

Please call it Barny's NewMeh's.
I may regret the FFF, as I often do U-turns on my feelings and feel silly. We shall see!

Holy shit.
New arcade fire could be their second or third best album.
This is a stunning record.

I really like the Arcade Fire album but it's still not as good as Neon Bible, maybe not even The Suburbs.
