i dunno about you chaps, but when a sitcom or comedy movie has a well-timed serious moment, it usually affects me quite a lot more than a black and white depression-fest or yet another 'gritty' british drama. so here are some moments in comedies that have made me stare off into the middle distance and pretend i've got some dirt under my contact lens. add yer own: fresh prince of bel air: will's father, lou, leaving yet again. stuff about relationships with fathers, positive or negative, really cut into me. the fresh prince had some really cringeworthy, mawkish serious moments but i think this is done pretty well. the office (uk): tim realises how much he likes dawn and tells her. the scene where he takes off the mic. love the bit at the end where he says "erm, she said no by the way". was going through something rather similar at the time i first watched this but it still works today. honourable mention for the xmas special as well where they kiss I couldn't find the vids for these: only fools and horses: where del takes the flak for rodney and gets beaten up and doesn't tell him. big man emotions there. scrooged: where bill murray is making the speech in his moment of clarity right at the end and calvin (the little kid who plays the role of tiny tim) breaks his silence after years and says "and god bless us, everyone". bill murray + little black kid = the royle family: the one where anthony is talking about going to TCOTU and they are all ripping the piss out of him and then out of nowhere jim tells him to be careful, to look after himself and if he has any trouble to let him know as him and dave would be down there in a shot. anthony can't stop smiling. great little moment. also, in another episode where anthony and emma tell darren that they want him to be the godfather of their baby and he bursts into tears and says it's the nicest thing anyone has ever done for him. fucking love darren the simpsons: a fitting end to a truly wonderful episode more to come when i can scout out some videos. in the meantime, as i mentioned above, give your own contributions and lets all have a big group crywank ;D

The "life isn't about endings...is it?" monologue gets me every time yet is still one of the most uplifting pieces of television, ever. What a fucking perfect show.

will probably get slaughtered for this but i've always liked Scrubs for this kind of thing, it's got a good mix of comedy and serious stuff. Like this:
Always liked that scene.

I came in to post about Del taking a beating for Rodney but Baz has already mentioned it, what an episode.

Heh I saw the title & thought fuck yeah I have two great ones only to see Baz mentioned them both. We've missed you buddy xx
Game on Series one, Matt talks to Martin about killing his father which is obviously a lie & played for jokes but within that as Martin & matt were childhood friends you can see there was a lot more depth to Matt & his fathers relationship that we the viewer ever get to know. Isn't that touching but I've always found those scenes to be pretty strong.
Fools & horses, When Rodney & Cassandra lose the baby & Rodney is in pieces & Del's little speech to Rodney to basically get a grip & support his parter, emotional stuff. Fools & Horses has tons of these moments which is why it's always felt like a lot more than just a comedy to most people. It's the perfect journey through a families joys & struggles, it still saddens me to this day that they didn't end the series when they made the money.

the first fools and horses one that sprung to my mind was when delboy purposely makes the lift break down so he can have a big one to one chat with rodney when his marriage has broken down and hes depressed and stuff. is a real powerful scene between the two of them.

Yeh that's the one after Cassandra's miscarriage, it's a superb scene.

I think Futurama has some of the saddest moments in comedy ever. They are masters at pulling out a tearjerker scene after a whole episode of laughs and more laughs. Two examples are:
The Luck of the Fryish (season 3 ep.4): the whole episode is based on Fry thinking that his brother Yanci stole everything from him after he got frozen, including his lucky seven-leaf clover, his full name and his dream to be the first man on Mars. Fry then reaches the graveyard where he thinks his brother is buried, where he finds his corpse and the clover, only to discover that that's not his brother, but his brother's son, named after his uncle to carry on his spirit. Then Don't You Forget About Me by Simple Minds kicks in, while Fry decides to leave the clover in the grave within his nephew.
Lethal Inspection (season 6 ep. 6): Bender finds out he suffers from a terminal manufacturing defect, effectively rendering him mortal. Bender must cope with his new found mortality and employs Hermes Conrad's help to track down the mysterious quality inspector—Inspector #5—whom he blames for allowing him to enter the world only to die. The ending/flashback sequence with that children song in the background is amazing.
just two examples, but there's a lot more on Futurama, because its possibly the greatest animated show ever.

nice picks shenandoah. actually reminds me of the scene from the episode Jurassic Bark which i cannot believe i forgot in my original list; the bit where fry's dog waits for him outside the shop for years and years. it's got to the point where i can't watch that episode anymore, it's too heartbreaking.

ffs baz I re-watched Jurassik Bark today and cried like a lamb aha! Another great moment I forgot to mention is the ending sequence to Leela's Homeworld, where you see the flashbacks of Leela's parents watching over her from the sewer during her life. Very moving.

I always thought that Donnie's death was handled rather well in The Big Lebowski.

Cosby Show The first ever ep where theo has his big speech about being a regular person.
I tried to find it on youtube but it's been removed I always thought it was awesome. Cosby show had a lot of great moments like this.

always want to skip these parts. i'm watching comedy to laugh not to have some force-fed morality lesson on something trivial. "GEE DAD I REALLY LOVE YOU", fuck this shit. the reason why seinfeld is the best show ever and will always be, they never went this way
