How was 2021 in terms of buying records for you? I got a lot of discounts on Discogs from sellers who think this person they are dealing with - Simone - is an attractive Italian girl who's into Captain Beefheart and early Kraftwerk. Of course I fostered the myth by having a girl in my profile picture and with a ludricrous usage of emoticons. Hey can I have 30% off?? Guys, it works, I don't know what to say. Loads of wankers in this world. What's your discogs account? I've bought more in 2021 than I have in ages. I think it's the first year that i've bought all of my favourite 20 albums of the year before the year has finished. Since Brexit, buying new records has been made tricky because of insane import taxes, but I have one or two reliable german websites that i've started using (can you recommend any Dutch ones?). Of older stuff, I've tended to buy more jazz this year. My aim for 2022 is to bulk up my Tom Waits, Nick Cave and Bob Dylan collections. I have loads of CDs by each but hardly any records.

I slowed down a lot. 2020 with lockdown was mental. I've literally no room for anymore now. So need to be really selective what I purchase and try to purge the stuff that I don't really need. I kinda want a collection where everything I own I consider a classic (4.5 stars and above on RYM) but I can't help but buy cheap shit when I see it.

What's your most extravagant vinyl purchase of 2023, motherfuckers?? Mine is, without a shadow of a doubt, that I finally got a copy of Armand Schaubroeck's incredible 1978 album RATFUCKER I had been looking for this album for absolute ages, until I finally found a copy that had everything I needed: good price, reasonable shipping costs, great condition and the fucking RAT FUCKER shocking pink guitar pick included (yes early copies came with a RAT FUCKER guitar pick). Of course I got it with a massive discount cos the seller (a French perv) thought I was "le bird". See, having a gay name pays off, you motherfuckers!! The album is a majestic collection of suburban New York tales that would make Hubert Selby Jr's epic Last Exit to Brooklyn read like a children book in comparison. Gigolos, hitters, rape, newborn babies trafficking, prison scenes of niggas putting razorblade in your soapbar. My favourite bit is the incredible 1'44" of BURIED ALIVE, possibly the most rock'n'roll tune ever recorded, in which a desperate Armand sing, SCREAMS even, of how the mafia is trying to frame him before they eventually kill him. It contains devastating lyrics such as: Rape! Rape! Explain it right... STATUTORY RAPE!! I love fucking Karen when I was 16 and she was 13!! I didn't look it up in a law book, but I made fucking love! I just loved her!! And now I'm in here... and you're trying to put me down!! Listen to this people, and if you don't like it let's have a conversation, outside, right now! BROTHER_JP: please consider revisiting your rating on RYM for this album. Now that you're a LAD, I think you should bump it to 5 stars, minimum!!

The song BURIED ALIVE has some of the greatest lyrics ever. As a start, it ends with the words "Well, you can shove it up your fucking arse", like all songs should.
and then at some point it says "... and when you leave me out to die, in a last rite, in all your fucking faces" I think he really meant to say FECES rather than faces (??). Unfortunately I don't speak English, so can't tell. But it would make it the first time someone has successfully used the word FECES in a song. And what a song, I mean, concrete cages, statutory rape, bibble crap dribbling out of somebody's mouth, razorblades in soapbars... this is the personification of rock'n'roll.

Never heard of this record & I am intrigued!
Didn't buy many records at all this year. No extravagant purchases on my part. Half a dozen new records & maybe the same in reissues. A customer I deliver records to I have a chat with sometimes. He's a bit more of a 70s ROCK/prog kinda guy, but he digs THE FUNK. Well, he gave a copy of James Brown's There It Is last week that he had upgraded. Cover is trashed but he says it plays well, not had a chance to spin it yet.

Going back to Simone’s question.
I had one extravagant buy last year.
The 7” single of Vicky Anderson’s (ex wife of Bobby Byrd, mother of Carleen Anderson and member of the JBs) In the Land of Milk and Honey.
It’s one of my top 3 tracks of all time and I had the 7” when I was a teenager. It wasn’t cheap back then and to get a decent condition copy last year set me back €60.
