Albums20. Broken Bells - Broken Bells 19. Everybody Was In The French Resistance... Now! - Fixing The Charts 18. Goldheart Assembley - Wolves & Thieves 17. She & Him - Volume 2 16. Paul Weller - Wake Up The Nation 15. Gil Scott-Heron - I’m New Here 14. Black Keys - Brothers 13. The Coral - Butterfly House 12. Charlotte Gainsbourg - IRM *I haven’t listened to this in ages and maybe it should be higher but it serves her right for confusing me. 11. Sad Day For Puppets - Pale Silver And Shiny Gold Surprised there’s no love for this, more cohesive than their debut and some massive sounding Oasis guitars. 10. Kanye West - My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy Loses my interest too often to rank any higher, but when it scoops me back up again it’s spectacular. 9. Lucky Soul - A Coming Of Age Always enjoyable and occasionally great, plus Ali Howard’s voice melts me like a big gay marshmallow. 8. I Am Kloot - Sky At Night It felt like they’d been going through the motions for a while, but this was a real return to form for them, sounding fresh and captivating for the first time in a long while. 7. The Futureheads - The Chaos Somebody said they’re like a modern day Ramones, that’s such a great description. They wring every last ounce of melody and energy out of their formula brilliantly. 6. LCD Soundsystem - This Is Happening NOT AS GOOD AS SOUND OF SILVER NOT AS GOOD AS SOUND OF SILVER NOT AS GOOD AS SOUND OF SILVER NOT AS GOOD AS SOUND OF SILVER 5. Ryan Adams - III/IV Words can’t describe how happy/relieved/strangely aggressive I felt when this started clicking with me. A joyous alt. country-geek-metal-Smiths-punk thrash of a (double) album with surprisingly little flab. 4. The National - High Violet That performance of Terrible Love on Letterman were the first notes I’d ever heard by them and straight away I felt like a massive fool for the fact. Brooding and compelling, it makes you feel like you’re inside a brilliant film noir. 3.Rose Elinor Dougall - Without Why I only followed her career because she was in a girl group who looked fit in polka-dots and sang fun ditties about boys and dancing, I wasn’t expecting this . A proper, eloquent, grown up pop record - her voice aches and swoons its way along in a way never had a chance to before. Gem. 2. Steve Mason - Boys Outside Never heard owt by him or the Beta Band before, so I owe this to 6music for playing the arse out of the single, becuase knowing me I would never have ended up bothering with this either. As it turns out it could have been any song on here getting the airplay and it would still have caught my ear, because from track 1 to 10 it’s loaded to the brim with great vocals, understated swagger and absolute dead-eyed beauty. 1. Laura Marling - I Speak Because I Can I’ve probably listened to this album about half as much as some of the others in my top 10, it’s one you definitely need to be ‘in the mood’ for, but whenever that mood comes it delivers above any other record this year for me, it pulls off the amazing trick of being as intimate and engaging as someone like Bright Eyes at his most confessional whilst remaining masterful and elegant throughout. I was sceptical when people said this was better than the debut and for a while I didn’t get it, it felt like the tunes weren’t there, but then I sat a little closer to the speakers, listened to the sound of her consonants clicking their way over the delicate guitars and strings and it transformed into something completely spellbinding. Can’t believe that flab faced gypsy-chic spack from Bumturds and Sons gets to sniff her knickers. Top Ten Tunesedited for Barny 1. Cee Lo Green - Fuck You 2. Rose Elinor Dougall - Come Away With Me 3. Lady GaGa - Alejandro 4. Gorillaz - On Melancholy Hill 5. Kanye West - So Appalled 6. Rihanna - Rude Boy 7. Ryan Adams - Icebreaker 8. Belle & Sebastian - I Didn't See It Coming 9. Weezer - Memories 10. Janelle Monae - Cold War

Nice list Part Brut. I'll have to disagree with you on Sad Day For Puppets record, I thought it was really average & didn't have the hooks the debut had. Agreed on the Noel-like guitars though, definitely that vibe on a few tracks but not enough to save it. Also as much as I love Eddie Argos that French Resistance record was fucking shit I like the 'he's such a prick' tune though

enjoyed your list part brut, top 5's are kinda similar!
Addendum to mine: I would have Tamaryn's The Waves in my top 10 had I waited, but I only heard it after seeing it on other lists. Awesome shoegazey/dream pop record. Check it out.

Ta guys I actually did a little cheer when i saw Lucky Soul had made your list It grew on you, then? Aye I was just mardy at the time because the debut is near-perfect to me so it already it's work cut out, and to top it off they'd gone a bit disco - and nobody likes change (or disco). But then a bunch of other albums came along and when I came back to it a few months along it suddenly seemed obvious what a really good pop record it was in it's own right. Put me down as a fan for shizz. Also as much as I love Eddie Argos that French Resistance record was fucking shit I like the 'he's such a prick' tune though Hah, I'd completely left it off my list until the last minute tbh and the thing is, I wouldn't even disagree about it being a bit shit it's just, like that She & Him album as well, it's a certain type of record that I find quite charming, I just turn my brain off and grin along fakeedit: Should've put I Didn't See It Coming by Belle & Sebastian on my tunes list, that's a lovely song.

Top 5 gigs:
1. Eels, Picture House, August 2. Steve Mason, Liquid Room, August 3. McCartney, Hampden, June 4. Supergrass, Barrowland, June 5. Belle & Sebastian, Barrowland, December
Top 10 tunes (not in order tbh)
1. Blur - Fool's Day 2. Teenage Fanclub - Baby Lee 3. Best Coast - Boyfriend 4. Gorillaz - On Melancholy Hill 5. Belle & Sebastian - I Didn't See it Coming 6. MGMT - It's Working 7. Janelle Monae - Tightrope 8. The Coral - 1000 Years 9. Steve Mason - Lost & Found 10. The Wynd - Favourites
Pretty rubbish year for albums although there were plenty of good singles IMO, almost everything I was looking forward to ended up disappointing me with particularly rubbish efforts from The Charlatans and Teenage Fanclub being low points. Really enjoyed the Steve Mason and Edwyn Collins records, I am Kloot and The National turned out to be growers which was a bit of a saving grace. Heard a couple of tunes off that Sad Day for Puppet LP, thought it sounded great but never got round to checking it out. Story of my life tbh.

I have the top albums compiled for what has been submitted so far. (i.e. up to 50 albums from each member, provided they are ranked, 50 points for top album, 1 point for 50th album, etc... so jollyboy, ben, longjohn, jp, Andy, mahoney, themex, krburg, titchjuicy, steve, columbia_rocks_man, barny and part brut at the moment. I've obviously counted those that aren't a total of fifty as well. Top album is still 50, 49 for 2nd etc... until the list ends.)
MORE LISTS IN THOUGH FFS

Seems like some forum member I'm not gonna mention and whose nationality wouldn't serve as a good clue has fallen down again in the dark and deep pool that is the unconscious and desperate drinking.
If I don't hear any news will do the top myself.

My favourite music of last year...
Favourite Album of the Year
Kanye West - My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy
I realise this record has probably already had enough positive and over-the-top write-ups, but thats because its just inexcapably excellent. I had Kanye about written off after the lacklustre of Graduation and the confusing-but-marginally-better 808s & Heartbreak, and then he pulls this out of the bag. Stunning album, flows perfectly start to finish and my favourite track on it changes constantly. If you haven't already heard it, get it looted and listened. Would list highlights, but the whole thing's worth having.
Favourite Debut Album of the Year
Pulled Apart By Horses
Self-titled album by Pulled Apart by Horses is easily the most exciting cd by a new band I heard in 2010. Packed largely with a mclusky-style punch but sometimes reminding me of QOTSA, early Idlewild or Glassjaw, they are breakneck, smile-inducing, turbo rock & roll. Back to the Fuck Yeah and High Five, Swan Dive, Nose Dive are standouts, look forward to hearing the next album on the promise of this one.
Favourite English Album
Laura Marling - I Speak Because I Can
Her debut was pretty good, a bit sickly production-wise, but great songwriting, and her second cd basically just cuts out all the flaws and every song nails her strengths as a songwriter and a vocalist. Rambling Man and Darkness Descends are two highlights of an album that I was thoroughly addicted to during 2010.
Favourite Straight-up Hip Hop Album
Big Boi - Sir Lucious Left Foot
Plays like a greatest hits album, tunes upon tunes. Its essentially just a repeat of how funny, engaging, varied and addictive he was when he made Speakerboxxx, absolutely no bad thing though. Fo Yo Sorrows and Tangerine are my current most abused tracks, but Shutterbugg and General Patton are also absolutely killer.
Favourite Scottish Album
Emma Pollock - The Law Of Large Numbers
An absolute surprise this, never in any doubt it would be a decent listen, no idea it would be 10/10 and packed with tunes. Easily on a par with latter Delgados at their best, Emma's come into her own as a solo artist now and songs like Confessions, I Could Be A Saint, Chemistry Will Find Me and Hug The Harbour have been all over my 2010.
Other beastin 2010 CDs:
6 Fire Like This - Blood Red Shoes 7 I'm New Here - Gil Scott-Heron 8 Diamond Eyes - Deftones 9 Root For Ruin - Les Savy Fav 10 The Winter Of Mixed Drinks - Frightened Rabbit 11 The Wants - The Phantom Band 12 Astro Coast - Surfer Blood 13 TCOTU Town - The Magic Theatre 14 The Chaos - The Futureheads 15 Made The Harbour - Mountain Man 16 Everything In Between - No Age 17 Renegades - Feeder 18 Magnetic Man - Magnetic Man 19 OJ Simpson - Guilty Simpson & Madlib 20 Infinite Arms - Band Of Horses
SONGS:
1 Runaway - Kanye West 2 Say No To Love - The Pains of Being Pure at Heart 3 High Five, Swan Dive, Nose Dive - Pulled Apart By Horses 4 Skip The Youth - Frightened Rabbit 5 Katy On A Mission - Katy B 6 Twin Peaks - Surfer Blood 7 Fuck You - Cee-Lo Green 8 Fo Yo Sorrows - Big Boi 9 Lips N Stuff - Les Savy Fav 10 Sally, Where'd You Get Your Liquor From? - The Low Anthem
