"The reason is not due to artistic differences or lack of wanting to continue, nor any health issues as both Meg and Jack are feeling fine and in good health. It is for a myriad of reasons, but mostly to preserve what is beautiful and special about the band and have it stay that way." More here: whitestripes.com/Within five years, they'll be back together I'd bet lol

TBH Jack waited long enough for her to get her act together. I can't help but feel some of these side projects he's ended up touring much more than he probably would of wanted to just because the white stripes were on hold.
You have got to ask, does it really matter? Jack White is in a position where he can put out & try whatever the fuck he likes under whatever name and it'll sell well & be popular. He should just make solo records. It's not like Meg is irreplaceable.

Sad news for music, although not surprising at all. One of those bands I really really wanted to see live. Jack is a musical hurricane so he will surely mount a dozen acts, but here he was at his finest and purest.

I'm saddened by this news. They were a special, special band. It's not a great surprise it's ended, but it would have been nice to see them do a farewell tour or something. They must have an album's worth of unreleased material, I hope it sees the light of day soon. Let's face it, nothing that Jack White has released since 2006 comes remotely close to the White Stripes. I quite liked the first Raconeteurs album, but the 2nd was totally forgettable and the Dead Weather are just dull. Meg's tits bouncing as she smacked that floor tom was one of the greatest sights in indie music where's Irish Chris when you need him? he was the only other forum meg-lover.

It feels like there's a law of diminishing returns attached to Jack's projects...every time he starts a new one, it's slightly less good than the last one. (Leading to the crap that is the dead weather.)
I only saw the stripes once, and it was apparently something of a unique show. They played the ottawa bluesfest (one of the major canadian festivals, lasts almost two weeks, started as a blues festival and is now no different from any other fest going on) in 2007, and there was an article the day before in one of the major Canadian papers with the headline "are Kanye West and the White Stripes bluesy enough for bluesfest?" (Evidently the reporter had never heard a single stripes song or they'd have not asked the question).
Anyway, apparently Jack read this article and decided "screw it, we're doing nothing but blues tunes all night...opened with 'stop breaking down' and did a lot of blues stuff off their first two albums, and didn't really play any of their big songs until the encore. Pretty damn amazing, either way.
To wit:
Stop Breaking Down When I Hear My Name John The Revelator Death Letter 300 M.P.H. Torrential Outpour Blues Lord, Send Me An Angel Wasting My Time Instinct Blues I Fought Piranhas Let's Build a Home Give Me Back My Wig Catch Hell Blues Astro Cool Drink Of Water Blues Ball and Biscuit
Encore:
Icky Thump In the Cold, Cold Night Hotel Yorba Dead Leaves and the Dirty Ground Black Math I'm Slowly Turning Into You Seven Nation Army Boll Weevil
Massive band...gonna miss them.

TBH though his other two bands have been big collaborative projects with other musicians. I'm pretty confident if he puts records out on his own or has a band where he is the complete leader & they play second fiddle he'll be able to make music as good as he did whilst in the White Stripes.

I saw them something like six or seven times, everytime they were nothing short of fantastic. People that moan about Meg's drumming don't have a clue, the pair of them had something close to a 6th sense, Jack would go off at tangents and she always knew where to follow. I don't think they ever bothered with setlists. I remember seeing them on their Elephant tour, opened with 'Dead Leaves and the Dirty Ground' followed by 'Black Math', it was massive, probably the greatest set opening I've ever seen.

Yeah, pretty sad about this too. One of my favourite bands of recent times, and i have time for nearly everything they did.
Not a massive fan of Jack's other projects, but it's mostly been decent enough. Really thought The Dead Weather were gonna be better than they were, mind. What with the talent involved.
Like Ben, i can deffo see them reuniting within a few years though. As others have said, White is never better and more inspired than when playing with Meg. I hope she's alright, too.

Call me a queer, but I honestly feel a bit sad about this Was a band I grew up with, one of the first cool bands that I liked before any of my friends had a clue who they were.

I was/am a forum Meg lover! Genuinely sad news though, can only echo the thoughts that others have said so far, I was lucky enough to see them 4 or 5 times too and they were always phenomenal, Jack is a colossal though, an amazing talent, he can play everything, I too hope he does a solo record in the near future, where he plays it all himself.

I only saw them at Glastonbury in 05 and they were headlining & I was 3,000 miles back so it wasn't great. Almost went to that gig they did in some ballroom in TCOTU on the last LP tour but some cunt let me down with a ticket.
