Looks like I missed the boat on this thread (like every other), anyone still looking for a partner, or just want a mixtape anyway?
Not you Rod, you've tried, and failed, to convert me to The Bluetones too many times.

so I got paired with phieniac eh? I don't know who that is, but hopefully he left a couple of clues about his musical preferences here. Hope he connects enough to follow this thread. I'm getting mine ready right now, no idea what you're into though so I'll just go for some stuff I like at the moment.

Well SC I gotta say I'm quite surprised by your mix. I expected something much 'rougher' from you. It's a nice listen.

Thanks chuze. I will listen, and review, your mix-tape later. There were only 2 songs on it I know so I'm curious

Out of curiosity which were the two you already knew?
I really appreciate this initiative, a very nice way to discover new stuff.

It's cool everybody has responded so fast to this.
Perhaps we can do it again in a few months time or even attempt to bring the soapbox album club back?

You were the one who put the Soapbox Album Club on hold by 'refusing' to turtle an album Karl Well after Kev got the thing started again I think Bill did one & nobody bothered with it so I didn't think there was much point. Perhaps a sexy new thread with BOLD TEXT and italics will get everybody excited.

Once this is finished I'm in for a new one though, the one on the old board went really well

ok, this is my mixtape for Phieniac and a brief track by track/introduction to the songs: 01 - The Pearlfishers - Across the Milky Way: didn't know who Phieniac was so I checked out a couple of the songs he recommended and it was the most unoriginal, boring, cheap melodic crap available on the independent market today (no offence!!). This song belongs to the same league but I always found it charming and clever. Always thought it would have worked as a perfect soundtrack to Wall E. 02 - Magnolia Electric Co. - Map of the Falling Sky: this is an awesome tune by the greatest songwriter of our generation, period. 03 - Willie Nelson - Devil In A Sleepin' Bag from what Phieniac wrote it looks like he's subconsciously looking for good songs to dance a quadrille to, and if you're really looking for a quadrille, the search is over. 04 - Paul Simon - The Obvious Child this song has a great tribal rhythm to it and I thought it fit quite nicely in this mix, it makes it a bit more dynamic and it's such a splendid, moving song. 05 - Violeta Parra - Que He Sacado Con Quererte this has the same "hammering" rhythm of the previous song but, although it is very bare, it's a lot louder and violent. It's the only song of this compilation sung in non-english (it's in spanish...chilean, for who's picky about accents) and it's a political folk tune by a legendary artist. If you don't like it, either you have no soul or you're swedish. 06 - Little Feat - Trouble I've always loved Little Feat's themes, cars, trucks, fat men in the bathtub etc, and for me this song captures George's "working class poetry" perfectly. Musically, if you like the Rolling Stones and the Band, Little Feat will suit you. 07 - Woven Hand - Story and Pictures wasn't sure about this song but eventually decided to include it. It's very dark and the Biblical images used are almost scary...but it's a fantastic song, very direct and powerful. 08 - Jonathan Richman & the Modern Lovers - Lonely Financial Zone Jonathan Richman is one of my musical heroes and I really wanted to include on of his songs without being obvious. This is a nice follow up to the previous song...it has the same airy feel and squared rhythm, but JoJo's voice is very natural, almost clumsy, and I thought it would have brought some life to the mix. 09 - Laura Nyro - When I Was a Freeport and You Were the Main Drag just listen to this, this is a blast, this woman was possessed by the devil (in a good way!) 10 - Bowerbirds - House Of Diamonds this is one of the few modern bands I actually like and this song is fantastic. 11 - Mark Kozelek - Find Me, Ruben Olivares much like Jason Molina, Mark Kozelek is a songwriter who belongs to a league of his own. You can't compare him with any other songwriter today, he's just too pure. He's like our time's Nick Drake. Please Bill, listen to this. 12 - Judee Sill - The Phoenix I wanted to include a good percentage of female artists, and Judee Sill has always been one of my favourite. She's one of the most clever artists ever. The Phoenix is a relatively simple song by her standards, but it's very direct and grabs you instantly. 13 - Joni Mitchell - Talk to Me this is The Genius, so... 14 - Warren Zevon - Desperados Under the Eaves I thought this made a perfect closer. It's humorous but in a very witty way, what you would expect from Zevon.

Perhaps we can do it again in a few months time or even attempt to bring the soapbox album club back? Why not do both? There's also no need to wait so long, it doesnt take much (except for Barny ) to lob some tracks into a zip and up em. We all listen to music constantly and this is a good way to share tastes and such. The album club was fun while it lasted as well. I say just do both. We could run the album club every 2 weeks like before and do mixtape exchanges monthly.

From Stockport With Love
turtleed with ImageShack.us1. M83 - BirdsNice little chilled intro, to get you moist for what's to come. 2. Caribou - After HoursWierd kinda trippy electro with a bit of a 60's vibe 3.Ladytron - Black PlasticAmazing band, light and magic is a brilliant album and this song is brilliant and has a great atmosphere about it. 3. My Vitriol - Always Your Way (acoustic)Thought i'd take it down a notch (copyright: hi-fidelity mixtape rules) with an acoustic number, this one's a beauty and i'd forgotten how much I liked it till I was researching for choices. 4. Spectrals - 7th DateMmmmmm a dreamy Yorkshire take on the classic spector sound, even manages to make lyrics about throwing up in his mouth sound cute. This one is a Stocky vinyl rip from the original vinyl only single before it lost a bit of it's lo fi magic when it was rerecorded for the cd ep. 5. Raveonettes - HallucinationsMy fave Raveonettes song, the moment where the echoey drums kicks in with the needle like guitars is orgasmic. 6. Chameleons - Swamp ThingKeeping it Manchester with this glorious slice of dreary 80's rock. 7. The Music - KarmaA track from one of there early EPs before they went shit, you can tell they were mucking around a bit with this one but it's still effortlessly amazing. 8. Happy Mondays - Olive OilLovely little forgotten pop gem from the Mondays, they weren't all ecstasy and melons you know. 9. Northside - Shall We take a tripManchester in the area! 10. Spacemen 3 - Big City (remix)Subtle remix of a classic later spacemen3 track, this one sticks in it's trancey groove for over ten minutes! 11. John Starlight - Shadow Breaker (boys noize edit1)Was going to leave it ending on big city but couldn't resist sneaking in a fucking gigantic electro tune as it's reflective of what i'm listening to at the moment and no one can deny how big this tune is.
