DEFINITELY that last line. It's just really cool to have a filmmaker in the horror genre that is making films that feel fresh, somewhat original & daring, yet they're playing to mainstream audiences. After years of supernatural thoughtless jump scare bullshit it has been nice to have films like his, Midsommar & the Witch that treat the genre with the respect it deserves. For years I've had to look to indie or foreign cinema to find anything worthwhile horror-wise, so it has been nice to be able to see horror films that feel like they've been made by people that actually love them in my local cinema.
Wouldn't mind seeing him try something completely different, like a heist thriller or a crime flick. Anything he can drum up tension in, I feel he can be a master at creating atmosphere/feeling.

I'm going through a bit of a period of watching films from the last few years I missed the boat on so we just watched Under The Skin.
Well, golly. I feel enveloped in something warm and tingly, comforting yet unsettling, completely alive. What a piece of cinema.
I want to say more and I likely will after a sleep but for now, I thought that it was absolutely unique, extremely courageous in its intentions & execution and very near flawless.
9.1/10

Modern masterpiece. The score Mica Levi score is so incredible. She's scored Monos which is out in a few weeks, it looks really special

Modern masterpiece. The score Mica Levi score is so incredible. She's scored Monos which is out in a few weeks, it looks really special fuck, that trailer looks essential. is it getting a wider release? the score was really something else. completely trapped me in the mood. i can understand why the film really divided people, but actually fuck'em. comparing it to my criticisms of Us where I thought some bits really needed a bit more explaining, nothing in Under The Skin did. it felt like 2001 at the start and used that as a springboard for its own voice rather than something contrived (or, and i fucking hate the gross misuse of this term, pretentious). Watched Booksmart last night, the directorial debut of Olivia Wilde. It handled the genre of coming-of-age nicely, in no small part because of the strength of the leads, especially Beanie Feldstein who is definitely quite the talent. Nothing in it surprised or felt particularly incredible, and there were a few moments which felt a bit too try hard OMG randomness, but overall I thought it was very likeable, modern and enjoyable. 7.4/10

I'd not really considered the score or message of Under the Skin. I referred to it as perfect purely because Scarlett Johanssen gets her titz oot!

I loved booksmart. I really didn't think it'd appeal to a cynical old bastard like myself but I had a blast with it, probably one of my fav films of the year so far tbh.
I'd imagine Monos will just get showings in arthouse cinema's & whatnot. Looks like something that'd be great on the big screen.

Under the Skin was definitely one of the most immersive cinema experiences i've ever had, that along with Mother from a couple of years ago.
I haven't re watched it since that initial viewing, though. The BFI had a couple of screenings over the summer, but I couldn't make it.
A wonderful film.

glad you loved it too. there were plenty of audible gasps in the cinema at certain scenes and plenty of people at the end just looking to the person they were with going WTF that was amazing!
it does seem to be fairly divisive though and i've read some real scathing criticism from people who hated it and to be fair i understand where some of the criticism is coming from. it is somewhat confusing in its message, quite possible gratuitous and clumsy in its handling of mental health and violence but i couldnt take my eyes off it. just the overall vibe with its homeage to taxi driver and kings of comedy was superb and phoenix's performance is totally oscar worthy. not a perfect film but a 5 star film for me for sure. as a wise man once said, true perfection has to be imperfect.

Enjoyed Joker a lot, didn't think it was a masterpiece, but refreshing to see a comic book film that at least has some bollocks, plus a great use of Jackson C. Frank's My Name Is Carnival. It prompted me to re-watch The King of Comedy, a film which I watched years ago & liked, but didn't love (though at the time I was probably just wanted another Mean Streets style film). Second time around I bloody loved it & Jesus, they borrowed a ton for Joker. Looking forward to seeing Cape Fear staring young Thanos next.

Only thing I thought hmmm about even in the cinema was he went on the talk show as a clown even though the streets were awash with clowns causing mayhem. Obviously wouldnt happen now, but even In 1981 I couldnt see it
