Dusted off my soapbox login to see what you folks think about a number of things. Joker, I think, looks cool as fuck but people where I am at are shitting all over it. "Not a necessary story", or "boring because we can figure out how it ends" are arguments I've read locally. But if you get a performance that is hopefully good as is universally acclaimed as this one is, isn't that entertainment enough? And you guys love it as film full stop, so I'm excited to see it.

El Camino: A Breaking Bad Movie 2019An amazing 2 hours. The amazing shots that you remember from BB are all there but with Netflix money. It is beautiful. I reckoned going in that this would live and die with Aaron Paul's performance. I, unlike others who have always thought he ruled as Jesse, thought his acting was meh in the series. But he is really good here. It's proper tight story about Pinkman. It's funny and has just the right amount of callbacks. 9/10

I also absolutely loved El Camino. Masterfully shot, beautifully paced with a very well balanced blend of drama, tension and light-relief comedy. Brilliant stuff.

The trailers clearly show what type of film you're getting, so anybody that goes expecting some fast paced CGI action fest is basically a fucking wally.

And also with a review I agree with word for word for rating. Vince Gilligan is simply a level above. Everything moves at just the right pace, nothing feels hurried, yet nothing is ponderous for the sake of it. There are a perfect number of asides which help build characters. The cinematography is simply gorgeous. The performances are on-point. It feels like another great strand to this universe. I absolutely loved it and will be hyped about everything Gilligan does. He is magic. 9/10

I've fixed the problematic Gary Glitter Joker scene, I just hope warner bros are on board Modern masterpiece. The score Mica Levi score is so incredible. She's scored Monos which is out in a few weeks, it looks really special fuck, that trailer looks essential. is it getting a wider release? Me & Kev saw a preview screening last week, Bleak as fuck, cinematography is top notch and the locations are to die for. I didn't think the film had much to say, but it worked on very simple terms. Definitely worth your time.

Thanks for all the Joker talk. para and I both really enjoyed it. I want to see it again, really, before I properly review it. I may have had a drink going into it.

A few I've watched recently:
Aladdin (1992) - It was on Sky Cinema and since I used to wear out the VHS of it, I thought I'd dip back in to see how it has aged. It hasn't. Sure, some things couldn't be represented today as they were, but in terms of the animation (still astounding, where even a fucking rug has character), the scale and lightness of touch, the voice acting (Robin Williams contribution still bowls me over) and the terrific colour and vitality of it all, it's vacuum-packed. When Disney were/are good, they were really near flawless, whatever 30 yer old basic bitches do to sully it by thinking being a Disney Princess is a way of life. Oh, and Jasmine is the hottest person who never existed. No desire to see the live action remake whatsoever because there is no way it will ever come close to this, so why fucking bother. Anyway, 9.2/10.
Stan & Ollie - Really sweet and immaculately well-judged. Coogan was great as Stan Laurel, but John C Reilly was an absolute revelation as Oliver Hardy. It takes in their post-peak years and serves as a wholehearted, non-sensationalist but much enjoyable story of friendship and coming to terms with changes in life. Shirley Henderson & Nina Ariadna are fucking excellent value as their wives too, bringing a lot of gentle power and humour to their roles in opposing yet complementary ways. The film seems to give off a glow, making it delicately bittersweet yet ultimately warm, funny, and feelgood in a world of disappointment and jaded cynicism. Which is invaluable in these times of shittiness and wankers. 8.4/10
Widows - It's a good idea and I enjoyed it. Thought the scene near the start when they were fleeing from the cops, with the door hanging off the van, was pretty thrilling. Other good moments too and Steve McQueen films have an interesting way of hinting at weirdness and abuse in relationships past and present. But fuck man, he needs to improve his dialogue game some. Lots of clunkiness here and there, which took me out of the moment. Still, a good watch but he'll do much better than this. 6.8/10

Deliverance (1972) Fun getting these actors to pull this off in Georgia, really bringing it. It is unfortunate you don't don't see this much in modern cinema. This film is fucked up and really, really cool. I just found out it existed from a podcast I listen to YESTERDAY. Watched it tonight and loved it. I don't want to give anything away, look it up yourself if you don't mind being spoiled. But you all likely are all familiar with it as I think I am one the few that haven't been. The banjo scene near the beginning of the film is something you will watch again after seeing the film. 9/10

I watched terminator 2 today- from the start - for the first time in ages. Incredible film, the effects - even nearly 30 years on - are only just starting to look a bit hokey in places, but often still look great. Perfect performances all round. I especially love the economy of Robert Patrick's movement. Only slight gripe was, obviously now we know arnie is the good terminator but I'm guessing at the time of release that was a shock? But I think they spoiled the reveal slightly with "bad to the bone" playing and him taking the guys sunglasses in an earlier scene. Just a slightly cheesy moment which they ran with further in ROTM. Great film though, easily in my top 10 of all time and gets a bonus mark for using "you could be mine".

Angel Heart (1997) oh my goodness. I just don't know what to make of Rourke. His acting seems really good in spots, but awful in others. He'll drop his accent when his character doesn't call for it. One scene he'll be intensely making eye contact with a person he is investigating, the next he is vaguely shouting at a blank wall. This film is weird. He tortures a junkie unconvincingly. De Niro was funny. I can't remember where I read this exactly, but Robbie DN won't work with Mickey because of the shit Rourke pulled making this film. Perhaps all my earlier complaints about Rourke are because of some shit editing. Or maybe the guy sucks. I still love The Wrestler. *shrugs* edit: also Lisa Bonet's tits are ooooot. I would like to have sex with her. 6/10 (edit: revised to 6.5, +.5 for Lisa Bonet's nudity)

The Laundromat - This got pretty savaged, but I don't think it's bad. Unfocused sure, but I thought the starfucking of the cast worked quite well - 7.3/10 The Day Shall Come - New Chris Morris. Enjoyed it a great deal, with some classic lines and it made an important point crisply. Sometimes the dialogue sounds a bit too written but overall the cast do a fine job. I liked it better than most of the reviews tbh, felt it had its own style and freshness - 8/10 The Joker - Bloody hell, it's not afraid to lean on King of Comedy and Taxi Driver, is it? Despite that, it's very good. Annoyingly so, since I have no great love for Todd Phillips. Looking forward to watching a second time, but first time round I thought it was pretty incendiary and elevated by a performance of genuinely timeless pathos from Joaquin Phoenix. Far from perfect, a wide selection of cunts will love it and I'd have removed a few bits, but overall, bravo. 8.6/10

Reality Bites (1994) This film's redeeming quality is Winona Ryder. Ethan Hawke TRIES SO HARD. He couldn't make the relationship or ending any sort of believable. I watched this earlier in a hotel room on HBO. para was bored and I heard her snore twice. 3/10

It’s at least a 10/10 for the Evan Dando cameo alone!

+1 for a muted Steve Zahn performance.
