Alice in Wonderland (2010) I wasn't particularly excited about this but I figured since it was on Sky Movies, I'd give it a punt. My fears were realised; formula Burton + Depp. It's weird that such a wondrous tale can be rendered so boring. It felt childish rather than childlike and lightweight rather than light of touch. Almost all the characters/voices/effects were crushingly obvious and nothing felt like it had a genuine personality. Helena Bonham Carter was maybe the highlight but even she felt like an appropriation of (the amazing) Queenie from Blackadder II. Anne Hathaway wasn't too bad either. The rest just felt like cookie-cutter weirdness. Take Depp, it was all affected. His fluctuating accents (hmm, lisp or brogue, lisp or brogue), his movements, his delivery and even his clothes - sure, a lot of effort went into his costume but it never sparkled or came alive. Which happened to be symptomatic of the film. No real verve, originality or imagination and considering the source material, that is fucking unforgivable. 4.8/10

Jp that film looks SEXY, I'm downloading it right now. Sounds up my street #007 The Beast Must Die! [1974] Fuck me this was shit. It was a 'who done it' type film but you had to guess who was the werewolf. Three quarters of the way through the film stops & a clock appears on the screen & a narrator says 'Now you must guess in the next 30 seconds who the werewolf is' which could of been really fun if I gave two shits who it was. Peter Cushing gave a typically good performance as some kind of wise Dr but apart from that the acting was atrocious. Dragged a bit as well which a 90 minute film should never do. 4

[008] Brothers: Solid performances (Natalie Portman is slowly winning my heart--she's the saving grace in Garden State and I'm starting to think she might be one of the best actresses of my generation), good premise, good pace. I wanted to kiss Tobey Maguire and tell him that he doesn't have to worry and it'll be allright. I was moved. 8.3/10

I'm starting to think she might be one of the best actresses of my generation Haven't seen Black Swan, but she's been dreadfully dire and one dimensional in everything she's been in since The Professional.

#008 Bonnie & Clyde [1967] First time I'd seen this start to finish, really enjoyed it. Faye Dunaway is fucking stunning in this, what a women. Warren Beatty must of been some kind of faggot to not wanna rip her knickers off at the start. No wonder Axl Rose stole his mrs. 8.5

008. Psycho First time in years that I've sat down to watch it. Absorbing and thrilling. Antony Perkins is excellent as the very creepy Norman Bates - the violins get me every time 9/10

001: Igby Goes Down (2002) - Burr SteersIt was ok, nothing special but no offensive, worth a watch at least, Jeff Goldblum was good in it, billed as 'Ferris Buellers year off', more like Holden Caulfied's mildly entertaining winter off 6.5/10 002: Gremlins (1984) - Joe Dante Its a classic isn't it, though probably haven't seen this since I was about 10, its Gremlins innit! 8/10 003: La Dolce Vita (1960) - Federico FelliniIts a beast of a watch, not such the length though its a long 3 hours, its stylistically odd and is kind of anti plot and structure, you really have to dig with it, but its one of those films where you really start to think about it after you have watched it, like a good novel, beautifully shot too, obviously. 9/10 004: Up In The Air (2009) - Jason ReitmanI wasn't so sure after about 20 minutes in but it really picked up after that, could easily have been too preachy but it had quite a balanced moral compass, thought it was heading to a big massive holywood ending but it veered away just in time, Clooney was great in it too, he is growing to be one of my favourite actors. 7/10

9/10
Have you seen many of Fellini's films kev? Been wondering where to start, that doesn't sound perhaps the best introduction. #009 Hell Comes To Frogtown [1987] In the radioactive wasteland of the future, Sam Hell is one of the last fertile men on the planet. A female organization intent on repopulating kidnaps Sam and sends him on a deadly mission to rescue -- and impregnate -- a group of beautiful women held captive by the violent bipedal amphibian leader of Frogtown. Will Sam and his "loaded weapon" survive the mission? Classic B-movie. The women can't resist Roddy Piper. Really good fun. 7 #010 Chinese Godfather [1974] Fucking awful, the box looked really cool, the film however was a shower of shit. It was shot so dark you couldn't see what was going on half the time, the dubbing was some of the worst I've ever heard & the martial arts were boring. Terrible. 2

Have you seen many of Fellini's films kev? Been wondering where to start, that doesn't sound perhaps the best introduction. No, thats the first, I decided to go with that one as it probably the most famous and also a lot of the reviews said it was a good mix of his earlier neo-realism stuff with his later artier stuff, maybe I was a tad harsh on it, its a great movie, for me, films that make me think about them after I've watched them and read up on them are great films and its definitely one of them. When I say anti plot and structure, I just mean it doesn't really follow a general movie structure, its set in 7 parts which represent 7 days of a week, none of the 7 parts are realistically linked other than the fact the protagonist Marcello is in them all, it kind of follows his sort of inner struggle and his attempts at risking temptation and trying to find himself

I know Kev, I could tell you loved the film I just meant that perhaps there would be a more accessible place for me to start rather than jumping in at the deep end but perhaps I'll just start here anyway.

[010] Easy AIt's starting to become really difficult for me to keep adoring Emma Stone. First it was that House Bunny atrocity, and now this? She plays the same character, or actually, she plays two different characters in the same exact way in both of these films. Why was this one trying so fucking hard? I finished watching it just to add it to the tally, no other reason. And now I feel insulted and 67% stupider. More stupid? See? It's starting already 4/10

A question on your rating, Ana. It sounds like this film completely pissed you off. Then why a rating of slightly below average? Why not lower? Did it have a redeeming quality?

A 4 for me is really low...a 5 is already below average. Average for me is 6... I don't know, I suppose it's a 4 for effort
