[041] Dog Day AfternoonHow cool is this film? Man, I wished I lived in NY in the 70's, my parents were lucky as hell. Anyway this film is great; I found it quite peculiar that there was no incidental music (bar that great Elton John song at the opening credits). I read a bit about the real life story and it seems like the film stayed pretty close to reality, which is rare and it's nice to see. I thought that throwing you out there with no back story at all on the main characters was pretty clever, as you get to learn a lot about them (or Sonny, at least) throughout the day. Pacino really is a fucking legend. 8.5/10 [042] Butch Cassidy and the Sundance KidFor fuck's sake, best looking leading cast ever?! It's almost unbelievable how these two men walked around for so many years without getting trampled by horny ladies to death. What a funny film too, wasn't expecting that at all. I thought they had a weird kinda chemistry but worked pretty well. I didn't think I was going to enjoy this as much as I did, to be honest. Aren't George Clooney and Brad Pitt supposed to be the new Newman and Redford? I think those two are great but not even close to the originals. I liked that scene with the bike (I'm team Newman in case you all were wondering) 9/10 [043] The FighterArgh I don't know, it was alright I guess, but Christian Bale scared the fuck out of me whenever he was on screen. I suppose that means he did a good job, but I guess I find it odd when a supporting actor completely steals the supposed protagonist's thunder and spotlight, just doesn't feel right, does it? Especially when you know it's going to be like that. Anyhow I was bored. 6/10

When I saw that you'd watched Butch Cassidy Ana, my first thought before I read the review was, if she doesn't love this (that's right, not even a "like" would've cut it) then her and I are through. It being one of my all time favs I'm a bit sensitive abouts it 'n all. They're magical together tbh. Now watch The Sting

American Pickers - Season 1 (2010) This show is great. It is a reality series of a couple of dudes from Iowa who work to go through peoples old sheds, barns, basements, etc. They look for antiques they can purchase and resell for a profit. Doesn't sound entertaining but it is tremendous. 8/10

Pawn Stars - Season 1 (2009) I love this type of shit. It really is a bit of a history lesson, but more so a lesson in bargaining. This reality series entails documenting what strangers bring into the largest pawn shop in Las Vegas. Might sound dull but a lot of the items are amazing. 8/10

Watch The Sting, Ana. Definitely one of my favourite films ever, and Paul wears a nice moustache.

#37 Red Heat (1988) I finally saw it Murphs!! Was enjoyable throwaway action. Wouldn't rank near my top Arnie flicks though it has the disadvantage of me not being able to view it with nostalgic eyes like I do most his other films. 7 #38 Murphy's Law (1986) Typical 80's Bronson with a gun type deal. Pretty good though it could of done without the accidental side-kick he ends up with, she uses insults as bad as 'Suck a doorknob, you homo!', 'You're welcome, dildo-nose.', 'Kiss my panty hose, sperm bank' & my favourite 'Hey, pubic hair, I'm talking to you!. I'm not comfortable having somebody talk to BRONSON in that way. Apart from that, solid stuff 7.25 #39 The Expendables (2010) Had just as much fun with it second time around, looked great on blu-ray as well. 8 #40 Red (2010) Completely shit. You'd think with a good cast like that it would deliver but it was horrible. Felt so lighthearted throughout every action scene yet they expected you to give a damn about the characters when none of the relationships were even worth bothering about. 3 #41 The American (2010) I really enjoyed this. I noticed on IMDB & RYM the average rating is very low. I can imagine many people put off by the pace expecting some kind of fast paced thrills but the American is a real slow burner & so much better for it. My only complaint was the plot was a little paper thin towards the end, when you find out whats really going on you are left thinking why would you bother going through all that. Minus that really good though Clooney does commit the cardinal sin of going down on a prostitute. Anton Corbijn has only done this & Control but I loved both, will definitely watch whatever he does in the future I just hope the general opinion of this film doesn't hurt his reputation. 8 #42 Death Hunt (1981) Pretty good this. Top cast with Lee Marvin, BRONSON, Angie Dickinson & APOLLO CREED. Was like a mixture of The Fugitive & Rambo. Felt the final 20 minutes could of packed a slightly bigger punch but either way very good. 7.75 #43 Iron Maiden: Flight 666 (2009) Watched this on the Iplayer. Rockumentary about their world tour a few years back. Was a big fan when I was little though I wasn't fussed about the live stuff moreso watching them travel the globe whilst being flown on their own jet by their lead singer. Had a decent time watching it. 6.5 #44 The Indian Runner (1991) This was a complete unexpected gem. Sea Penn's directorial debut loosely based on a Bruce Springsteen song. Really strong cast with David Morse, Viggo Mortensen (playing a real badass) & Patricia Arquette playing his mrs. Also smaller parts by Benicio Del Toro, Dennis Hopper & BRONSON. A real touching film, from what I read after it seemed it flopped at the time & has kind of been forgotten about which is a shame as I loved it. Definitely recommend it. 8.75

Ok guys, I'll download The Sting tomorrow. Thanks for the suggestion. Lynds, which team are you though? If you don't say Newman, we are through. [044] Drama/MexI figure I'd give this a watch after Jaime's review, cause I'm quite fond of Mexican cinema. Anyway why do they insist on having three separate stories intertwining with each other at different parts of the film? They did this with Amores Perros and that was enough, cause it was perfectly done. In this one...well, if your film's only 'hook' is that kind of narrative, with loops and overlapping scenes and characters, make sure there are no loose ends. The dialogues seemed a bit amateurish at first and the acting (especially that girl who plays a spoiled bitch) was a bit off. The highlights of the film were definitely the masseuse with the suicidal old man and Gonzalo wearing that 70's Dutch long-sleeved football jersey 5/10

Withnail & II've written at greater length about this in the past so I'll keep it short. It's the purest poetry and frankly mind-bending how 95% of the lines are memorable works of art. The most wonderful, beautiful, hilarious and gorgeous of films. In my eyes, only Pulp Fiction has sailed closer to true perfection. 9.8/10

Ana, while I love Mr Redford to death, there are few people on earth who come close to the brilliance of Paul Newman. Team Newman all the way, which will only be more solidified for you after watching The Sting.

Black SwanI liked it but it suffers from the same problems as almost all Darren Aronofsky films for me. It doesn't have the lightness to touch in it's direction to escape the weight of its pretensions. The concept is interesting but the execution doesn't do it enough justice and it's complicated rather than being complex, a fact it hits you over the head with at every turn. Still, it's fucking light years better than shite like Requiem For A Dream and I did enjoy it. Well overhyped though. 7.1/10

Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid 9/10 -> one of my fav scenes of all time is when he's riding the bicycle around and just doing 'tricks' on it.
3:10 to Yuma - 9/10 -> I've actually never seen the original version and it's at the top of my list to see (I noticed that it's on netflix for xbox so I'll be watching it soon). Without a doubt Ben Foster steals the show from Bale and Crowe for me.. he's just the perfect person to play the role of crazy sidekick.

The Fighter (thanks Ana)
I honestly really enjoyed this movie, and I don't like boxing at all really. It's funny how Christian Bale just completely steals the show. Wahlberg is just so fucking average as an actor, and if he didn't have Bale to prop him up in this movie, it probably would have completely failed. I know Bale gets a lot of shit these days cause he's kinda fucking crazy, but seriously, is there a better actor around these days? Like Johnny Depp he just becomes whatever role he plays. Always a joy to watch. Watching Bale's character watching the film of him as a crack addict was probably the most powerful scene of the film.
7.5/10

Johnny Depp plays the same part in every film nowadays (thanks Tim Burton, you boring prick) and Christian Bale's pure unadulterated cuntiness shines through so much so in every role, for me personally, that I can't stand to watch much of what he's in. I do however, have a huge soft spot for Mark Wahlberg. Think he's a likeable actor and does well in most of the films he's in. He stole the show in The Departed, for example.

Definitely agree with Andy about Wahlberg. He has suprised me during the last couple of years with some great roles. And of course he's gonna look a bit bland and dull in comparison with Bale in the Fighter. But I loved how he, intentionally, downplayed his role for the sake of the story. Massively underrated actor.
As long has he steers away from complete rubbish like that M. Shamalayaxxxxx movie.

#45 Black Swan [2011] Been interesting to see the different reactions round here to this one. I put it on thinking that perhaps it wouldn't be for me but really enjoyed it. Like something like Rourke in the Wrestler the whole film hinges on Portman's performance for the film to be a success & I thought she was great. By no means a masterpiece but a very good film for me. 8
