Don't know if there already is a topic for this, I vaguely remember there was, but i cannot find it..

A topic to discuss and masturbate over the most valuable things in life: vinyls.

Tell us (me?) about your latest finds, what stuff is on your wishlist. And other things.

Today I received through the mail an original copy, in mono, of the Small Faces' ''Ogdens' Nut Gone Flake'' (yes, a 1st pressing, in the round sleeve) As I had been after it for years, this is a big day. Actually, around 2 years ago I thought I got the round one (also a mail order) but when it arrived it turned out to be a Canadian pressing in a normal sleeve, with exactly the same label name and everything.. All in all it took me 5 years to find a decent copy.
Now, the sleeve on this one is worn, in all honesty it's in a bad shape, but I've just checked the vinyl and besides your average crackle that is quite decent. For 17,20 (including shipment) not a bad deal.

Some other favourites I've gotten the past year:

The Hiss - Panic Movement (around 4? on ebay)

The Kinks- Face to Face, first pressing in mono (20 euro, quite a setback but worth it. Record Palace, Amsterdam)

Arthur Lee - Vindicator (think it was 8 euro in my local record shop, hilarious)

Teenage Fanclub - Bandwagonesque (also in the local store, 10euro, in perfect condition :-/ )

The Stands - Horse Fabulous (5 quid on ebay)

Now, my wishlist is huge but at the top are any of the The Fall's 4 early nineties releases (Code:Selfish, Infotainment Scan, Extricate and Shift-Work.) Impossible to find in stores here, but I've seen them go on ebay for 10 quid on a good day.

Also, it's is my goal to get all Oasis singles on 12'' vinyl, so far I've only got Shakermaker, Hindu Times, a promo of Live Forever and Let There be Love ( :-X ). But there's no hurry in that.

Humble Pie - Town and Country (since it's the only HP LP I don't own yet)

James Booker - Blues and Ragtime from New Orleans

Ronnie Lane - One for the Road

Anything by Lee Hazlewood.

The Cost of Loving by The Style Council

I've had two spells where I wanted to collect vinyl. The problem is I've no room to store them & where I've got my record player it's a bit of a chore to put anything on.

I've got about 100 records and maybe 50'odd 7inches. Once I get my own place I may start collecting. I like picking things up for next to nothing, I'd never actually pay good money for anything these days. 1 or 2 quid 2nd hand will do me.

Got a copy of Nancy & Lee for 50p recently & it looked ok but plays like shit so gutted about that.

I think I'm destined to be a mp3 guy forever now. The convenience, easy access & lack of space needed dwars over the advantages of having a record collection for me. My CD's which I spent so much money on for me now are completely useless in a box up the loft. I really should sort out selling them now before they become obsolete but I know I'll never be bothered to do so.

Yeah, storage does become a problem after a while. Like you I think cd's (except for the odd rarity) are a bit useless. Since I lost my hard disk theyve regained some purpose and ive started collecting and listening through my record player more than I used to cos of that, so I kinda got used to this way now. But cd's mainly take up room. Can't believe all the money I've spunked on shit like ''Because of the Times'' and ''Phantom Power'' (good albums, but 20 quid a piece, and 2 quid in the bargain bin a year later.) Can't imagine ever paying more than 2 quid for a cd again. I don't mind spending a bit of cash on vinyl though. Only when I know it's worth more than I'm paying for. Usually I stick to the cheap things as well, think I've never paid more than 20 quid for anything. If anything it's the fun of finding rare stuff for cheap that makes it worthwhile.

About 4 years ago I did buy some new records, I decided I was going to buy my favourite 5 or so records of each year then I remembered how much new vinyl is and decided against it.

Do a video showing your vinyl of Ton, I bet you've some sexy records.

This is a great point. Though I have a program which works as a manual scrobbler so if you listen to a vinyl you can type the name of the album into it and it scrobbles the entire album for you.

I'm subscribed to many in the vinyl community. It's very, very funny.

If I collected vinyl I'd leave here for that level of stardom.

I've not bought any vinyl for ages. I'll probably start again when I eventually get around to setting up the monster hi-fi system that I recently inherited, which includes high-end speakers guarenteed to blast your wig off. Downside is I don't have a fucking clue where to start :D

There are two records that I'm particularly proud of:

Has never even been released on CD. Dunno how many copies are out there, but it can't be many.

Only 1000 of these bad boys ever made. Came out before they even signed a proper deal. I have one, and so does Ross Forgan. Unless he's sold his to buy a new lab coat.

yeah I started getting into vinyls around 2004 I think, mainly because I wanted to buy records for cheap at the fleamarket.

Then after a while I started getting LPs of the new releases I liked aswell -- I eventually stopped when I realized that for the price of 1 single new vinyl, I could get 3 or 4 CDs at play.com. Nowdays that the musical market has collapsed, second hand CDs (and brand new old releases) are cheaper than second hand vinyls (and come in better conditions)

Problem with vinyls has always been that if I have spend 1.000 euro for a good hi-fi plus 10 to 40 euro for each record plus live in constant worry that I can scratch the record just by looking at it too much...meh, give me CDs anyday.

And yes, I know vinyl sounds so much better than CDs and they are much more valuable from a fetishist point of view, but at this point in time that I can get so many CDs for 3 quid each, I just can't care less about vinyls.

I dont think theres really any point in CDs anymore though, they used to be the most convenient format but now everyones music is digital they are just silly things in shitty ugly cases.

I was going to buy myself a record player but then I realized I can't get any proper music on vinyl here. Unless you count second-hand Queen, Aerosmith and 60's latin bands as proper music. Ok I wouldn't mind the 60's latin music that much but I want other things, so I'm thinking it might not be worth the investment.

I think to sum up this thread.

Vinyl, a beautiful thing to look at with great sound but more trouble than it's worth. In an ideal world I'd have everything on those beautiful slabs but it's just not possible so fuck it. 320birate shall do me forever.

I was looking for my copy of the cost of loving (radio promo 45rpm in the horrible orange sleeve) the other day and found a copy of harvest I didnt know I owned.
vinyl is wonderful

I paid a quid for all the style council records in 94/95 there was a record shop in sheffield at the bottom of the road from me that had bought the entire stock of a radio station that went bust, so was flogging the records off for pennies. there were tens of thousands, in the shop, entirely unsorted. so if I was ever bored I'd just pop down the shop and spend an hour or so rifling through the racks. absolute heaven.
