all the good music this year has been everything but guitar bands, theres still decent guitar bands I like but theres a sense I think that guitars now are for squares, and literally everyone has a laptop anyway, its the natural way to make music now...
is this a fad or a sea change?

it's a sea change. The method for composing demos and recording has changed alot in the last decade. Years ago you'd write a song, record it on your dictaphone and pass the tape around so you could practice it full-band. Nowdays everybody records with the PC to begin with, and songs naturally shape up in a different way. Since the technology has changed, the way people approach composition has changed -- it's rare to hear songs composed with the guitar in mind, or starting from a riff or a chord progression. Composing with a computer gives you a different range of tools you can use; that's probably why, in comparison, guitar music is considered square of limited. I think this transition has shifted the focus from "how a song is written" to "how can I string these ideas together?".
Add to that that while our generation has been built on heavily guitar oriented music like Nevermind or Definitely Maybe or OK Computer to some extent, this generation has its foundation on stuff like Kid A and the likes.

Walls are of course a two piece band from TCOTU who release on the KOMPAKT label, whilst Ital is as I'm sure everyone knows the solo work of the singer from Mi Ami

Electronic music has been around for a while now forever, guitar/ladrock isn't going anywhere. I blame The Strokes for disappearing up their own arses. But it'll be back with a bang.

I do hate going to a party, playing some guitar rock and have everyone say I'm "still living in 2004". I blame MGMT for that.

I think it is, and that's not a bad thing. There has probably never been a worse time for popular music than the landfill indie stage of 2006-9.

I feel like guitar driven music has been hijacked by insipid assholes who go to bed at 21:00 .

I blame Chris Martin. Never has a band in the history of music had such a terrible affect on guitar music.
