I've relinquished a little and I have heard some bits of this, taken from a review were they completely destroy the album, bringing U2 to the table. The truth is there's a patent change of sound but I guess it could be necessary. The first track has specially surprised me, and on some other tracks the guitars seem more absent and less furious, which obviously reduces the impact, but will reserve further judgements until I hear the whole thing.

the circulating rip is particularly shite, so I'll hold off judgement until the proper cd comes out. That said, I gave it a spin the other day and while there's some smashing material in it, I didn't like the way they structured the tracklist. There's this triplet by Peter in the middle of the record, all three songs sound alike and they blend into each other. After these there's two slower and "spectral" pieces which sound similar again and they make little sense next to each other. Not saing the songs are bad per se, but it ruins the flow of the record I think.
Usually BRMC have huge bonus tracks to go with their records, so I'm sure there's still a few surprises left.

Iconic JamesDCody gave the poo rip a listen and said pretty much the same thing about the tracklisting being all wrong.
I've not heard it yet but minus Howl, which for me (& most of this board) is untouchable, all their fucking albums have had too many songs on them. The problem with BRMC is often their songs are too similar so the prospect of a 12-13 song album is too much. Take their last album Beat the Devil's Tattoo, it had some amazing moments but with 13 tracks, 4 being over 5 minutes and one 10+ it becomes tiresome. If they had released it as a 9 track album it would of been fantastic.
Their debut is another example, on a track by track basis I pretty much dig every single tune on there, as a complete piece I always lose interest near the end. It's not a case of the band learning to edit themselves, they just need to include less material on each record. The invention of the CD has led to so many albums having underwhelming or too much content just to fill up the space. 40-45 minutes for a record is more than enough in most cases, especially when you sound like BRMC.

If they had released it as a 9 track album it would of been fantastic. I spent the last 2 weeks listening to Devil's Tattoo because I wanted to rate it on RYM properly - it took one week to digest most of the songs, while the second week I spent trying to figure out the difference between Shadow's Keeper and Half-State. Two great songs in my opinion, but both are "natural closers" and they have no reason for being on the same album, almost one after the other. I don't understand why they do this either, filling the record with stuff doesn't necessary make it better - it's rather the opposite because if you cut the excess you make the spectacular stuff shine even more, and then just you can just release the excess through the website/iTunes as bonus tracks. Maybe it has to do with inner songwriting ethics, I mean, if Robert writes a strong closer by himself and Peter does the same, then the album has to have both closing songs because, you know, "I don't wanna pick one in favour of the other". I dunno.

I also used to confuse those songs! The truth is I actually love that album, although it's actually a fuckin' long one. Despite it probably being the most BRMC sounding as a whole which could seem tiresome with it being their 5th, I enjoyed it from the first listen to this day. But yeah, I guess I would hold it in a higher regard if it was a little shorter.
And is it just me or Peter is losing presence? I haven't made a count but it's a sensation I carry, Mr. Shaolin.

I think Peter's taken a backseat on this one and Rob's basically used the process of writing a record to help him come to terms with the death of his father. It doesn't help either that most of the Peter sung tunes are dogshit.

I've always been on team Robert since I had a chat with him about supporting oasis and his disdain for recent dylan before a show here in 2002. (as I recall, this was after the RAH shows and before Finsbury) They were just hanging around the soundboard and DJing the interval between the support band and their set (by putting CDs into a discman connected to the board). My GF and I were sat next to the board, and she wandered over to the board and started talking to someone and came back a few minutes later and said -
Her: That guy whose been standing beside you DJing the CDs is in the band! Me: (slow on the draw): what band? Her: BRMC, you idiot. Me: ....oh. (Maggie's farm playing on the PA) Me: (looks over...) So what do you think of Dylan's new one?
Cool guy. Talked with me for 15 minutes right before they went on.

They are wonder people, they've gone out of their way for the fans on plenty of occasions when they didn't need to.
Just went to finally get tickets for Brixton and standing is sold out FFS.

Yeah, they're both really nice. They had to stop playing early at a gig in Chicago once (due to some stupid rule in that area of the city) so they went and played in the alley next to the venue. The cops told them to move so they walked down the street and around the neighborhood with acoustic guitars and played a few more songs. It was incredible.
Another time I was at a bar next to where they were playing (I didn't have tickets) and they were unloading their gear and talking to fans outside. Went and had a chat and me and two friends got on the guest list. We didn't even ask and weren't expecting it. I'll always be grateful for that.
Those two experiences are pretty much why I will defend that band until the day I die.

I have the setlist from that show lying around my apartment somewhere. They were doing stop and six-barrel shotgun a good year before 'take them on...' came out. (Or it may have been 'shade of blue'...it's been 10 years after all.)

Aye they're great guys, me and my best mate have been going to their gigs for 11 years now (think i've seen them about 21 times so far) and they've always been great with us. Guestlist, backstage, on the tour bus, in for soundchecks the lot. Probably the nicest guys in rock, Jago was a weird one mind.

So yeah, a clip of them playing in the alley back in the day. One of my favorite concert moments ever.
Also, Let the Day Begin is my second favorite song of 2013 so far.. Even with a shitty quality leak, their new album is miles ahead of their last album.

Yeah, very nice people. Once I saw them in Milan and we had nothing to do after the show so we stayed on the concert hall just wasting time. Then Robert appeared just wandering around in a "hey, you can come to shake your hand" way, I had a photo with him. Peter was also chatting with some people after the concert, but I'm not one who initiates conversations with famous people, I would feel silly tbh. I have an important man crush for them though.

they're definitely one of the few bands that would do everything for their fans - they were like this in 2001 as unknowns and are still like this nowdays that they have fans everywhere in the world.
I really can't put a finger on none of the two songwriters, though I always thought they have started to go in two different directions lately. Rob is doing the part of the classic american songwriter, with these huge sophisticated rock tunes, while I guess Peter has to balance it out writing the aggressive dirty r'n'r stuff. Now that is not a problem, but some of the stuff Peter is coming up with recently is a bit errr, obvious, like the triplet he has on Specter, he sounds like bleedin' Vines at some point...

Loving Lose Yourself! One of my fav tracks of the year so far.
Agree on the album just having too many tracks! Seems to be the way with almost all BRMC albums (started with baby 81).

when i saw them open for spiritualized in 2002 they were pumped about playing Finsbury park later that year, I think this gig was in March, Jago though seem to be lost, total weirdo.
