Denim - Back In Denim
I started out not really liking this much at all. Initially found the production just horrible and off-putting. I stuck with it and am glad that I did because it's a really good record.
Its such a fun album with hooks and infectious melodies all over the place. I love the glam-rock feel they have going and all little touches of electronic stuff going on in the background with the synths and stuff add some real depth to some of the tunes for me.
The opening track is like We Will Rock You meets T-Rex & Status Quo with a little menace thrown at the verses. Speaking of the verses on this track, the singer reminded me a a tiny bit of the guy from Franz Ferdinand in his delivery.
Fish & Chips is excellent. I don't know enough about Kim Wilde to agree or disagree with Karl on this one, but I got a real punky vibe from it; it reminded me a little of The Exploding Hearts in the energy it has. The spacey synth stuff going on here is really good, too.
I like Bubblehead but it's not as good as the opening two tracks and doesn't really get going like I want it to. It seems like it's gonna take off a little leading into the half way point then just goes back and does everything it did upto that point. Still decent, though.
With Middle of The Road I get real punky vibe from it again. I got a bit of a Replacements vibe from it tbh, and again, The Exploding Hearts. I'm not a big fan of the lyrics, they seem total cliche but part of me thinks it was their intention. Is there a woman on this one who starts doing some weird singing when the keys come in? Whoever it is (woman or not) I like that part.
Now, onto my absolute highlight from this; The Osmonds. What can I say? The verses sound like fucking Stevie Wonder or something. I can see him now bobbing around, mashing the keys and smiling away like a mad man. I really love the lyrics, too. I love way it slowly builds up to the strings then winds it all back down for final verse. Then you get the chorus again with someone just riffing out like a funky motherfucker on the final chorus. And the we got that outro with handclaps and everything. I just fucking love this tune.
I like everything else that comes after this but it's American Rock that stands out the most on the 2nd part of the album. There's a Dylan-esque delivery of the lyrics here which is odd because I don't here it anywhere else on the record. I love the driving guitar on this which serves as a great backdrop for the story being told.
Overall, I'm giving this record a solid 8/10. It's a record I've gave a lot of time to these last few weeks and have definitely reaped the rewards. I'll now be taking a look and their other records but regardless of what I think of those, I'll always come back to this.
