Liking the Hold Steady album.
The new Future Islands is annoying me, which is sad cos I really liked the last album.

Third and final Pixies EP is out. They are then releasing the 12 tracks as "the new Pixies record". Though Surely this will be considered as a compilation such as Bona Drag or Hatful Of Hollow rather than the follow up to Trompe le monde?
They've really fucked up the way they've gone about releasing these. Now there is zero anticipation for the album release. Had they dropped the 12 songs as a record out of nowhere there would have at least been some excitement and buzz about their comeback & more importantly, some good will towards the band. By slowly but surely dragging out these EPs they've destroyed any kind of anticipation. I guess you could also argue by reforming and touring with no new material for god knows how many years didn't help but jesus christ they've made a mess of this.
Having said all this, I thought there were some good moments on the first two EPs so I'm looking forward to the third even if I'm not very excited. I don't know why, but I was for some reason thought there was going to be four EPs? Did I dream this? As I was thinking that from 16 tracks I'd at least be able to hopefully make a worthwhile ten track record.
Oh well, I'm still glad that they came back. Seeing them at the Troxy with Kim about five years ago was one of my favourite gigs I've ever been to so for me it has been worthwhile. I just wish that they'd done a Bowie and dropped a new record out of nowhere, at least then I think people wouldn't have gone so overboard regarding what a disaster recording new material apparently was. I'm pretty sure had they done it this way people would have been more forgiving towards an uneven new Pixies record despite obvious flaws.

I suspect with Kim leaving, it may have forced their hand a little and they maybe needed to approach it in a different way. If you have a full line up you can just drop a new album if you're the Pixies, but if you take all her bass parts off and just drop a 'New Pixies Album (Minus Kim Deal)' it probably would have just bombed anyway, I reckon they tried to do something a little different to try and stir interest?
They'll always be dead to me without Kim anyway.

tbh I thought the EPs weren't a bad idea, a little bland but I always considered them minor works in small doses, enough for justifying them going along without Kim. Now, releasing an album with those is a quite bad decision.

Been hammering the new Lorelle Meets The Obsolete album this week. it's really good isn't it? they were one of the best things at the liverpool psych fest last year. The War On Drugs album is excellent too, despite it sounding like Springsteen in places

Embrace the boss David! Though I hear more Tom Petty rather than Springsteen in their new record, either way I fucking love it.
That Lorelle Meets The Obsolete record was too samey for me, I liked their sound but I found it kind of average. I bet they're great live though.

I even hear Mark Knopfler tbh... and I don't care!
To top it all with that Pixies thing, you can pre-order the digital version of the album on iTunes!! Nonsense.

The War on Drugs record is pretty weak- in places it sounds like a dodgy 80's teen movie soundtrack. Compared to Slave Ambient it.... well, it doesn't compare. It misses Kurt Vile's influence big time. Kurt Vile hasn't been with them since their first record. Happy to see Baz hasn't gotten his clutches on them yet, that fucking poseur.

His influence, whether in uncredited writing, production or what is all over the record.
The feel of the latest record is quite different.

I love that album, went right off after I saw him live, he turned up late then they all fucked off immediately to get food, came on stage stoned and spent 40 minutes tuning up before the set itself started at 1am. dull.
