it's a relentlessly ok album which i probably would've loved 10 years ago. he's still got a great ear for melody but, basically, he just can't get away with writing songs about nothing anymore. he needed the exuberance of youth and liam's vocals to make that work. now it's just boring.
highlights:
riverman - bit contrived but i do quite like the groove. lock all the doors - obvs it's basically a 20 year old demo, but it's still a cracker of a chorus tbh. right stuff - pretty cool but it'd take a whole album in that style to demonstrate an actual move forwards. ballad of mighty i - this is a terrific song and easily noel's best as a solo act.

Now I just enjoy the tunes because they are mostly pretty freaking good. But if the lyrics are too bland I just lose the interest and makes me even alienated from his solo stuff. I dont know if this album will stand the test of the time if it has just some tunes and grooves and no additional creative depths or whatever new'intetesting going on. He should by this point try and give the songs a more lyrical twist just to keep himself interesting, musically it is good but for how long can we be arsed?

At least he's now ripping off his own tunes in a good enough manner, which is certainly more than I expected.

does the beginning of dying of the light remind anyone else of midnight in a perfect world? obviously that's where the similarities end, though.

Anyone else hearing the similarity between the verses of If I Had A Gun and Lock All The Doors?

Don't you think Revolution Song sounds quite a bit like Solve My Mystery?

Surprisingly great tonight apart from the shit drummer overdoing it as usual and destroying a few songs. Champagne Supernova was unreal, as was the full band version of The Masterplan

I get the point about Noel writing songs about nothing and not being able to relate to the lyrics, I would counter this somewhat, and say that it is only slightly, partially true.
I'm the man with the largest facts in the world.
1) Noel has always written songs about nothing. Its now slightly less exciting without Liam and the rest of the band. Noel's vocals cannot bring a song to the forefront of world championship wrestling, Liam's can.
2) Noel has improved as a music writer, the sound, direction, and depth of his music is light years ahead of anything since be here now
3) lyrically, he has improved greatly at writing love songs. All his best album moments where the lyrics and music come together to deliver the ultimate scorpion death drop can be experienced when he's writing simple songs about love. He should stick to this formula. It works brilliantly for him, and in any capacity.

What A Life! The Masterplan Aren't those essentially the same Oasis numbers he's been doing since that acoustic tour with Gem about a decade ago, with the addition of a version of Champagne Supernova which was most likely the most turgid in history? I think we know who was to blame for the monotony of sets from 2005 onwards.

Well, aside from the masterplan, digsy's, shout it out loud and champagne supernova, you're exactly right. 2 out of 6 ain't bad.

Riverman - 8.5/10. Love it. In the heat of the moment - 7/10. It grew on me, I have to admit The girl with the x-ray eyes. 6/10. I have a hard time remembering this one. Lock all the doors - 7.5/10. I expected more from it, given the rave reviews...get the feeling it will grow on me. The dying of the light - 8/10. I like the demo better. And yet, of the 10 songs, this is the one that's burrowed into my brain fastest. The right stuff - 8/10. And now for something completely different. Nice. While the song remains the same - 7/10 Solid. The mexican - 6.5/10 I liked this better when it was a bonus track on exile on main street You know we can't go back. 8.5/10 Love it. Ballad of the mighty I. Best thing on the album.
Solid 7.5-8/10 so far...the sound is fantastic on headphones. Did a great production job.

Yeah, production is nice for this set of songs. Producing Oasis would be a different thing.
Didn't like them initially, but Heat and Ballad are both good singles, I can't completely feel them but you won't find bigger choruses out there.

gave it a go, heard the first track ripping wonderwall, ripping the title from a nick drake song, ripping the opening line from the beatles and d pretty much gave up. what i heard was pedestrian dirge with some nice instrumentation, but will give it another go

Noel should sing all songs with his hands behind his back, and get slash to do a 10 hour version of freaky teeth, with a Vegas desert back drop. Fuck yeaaaaaaaa !
