Grinderman 9/10
Easily a top 3 gig of the year for me. Nick Cave has so much fucking stage presence.

And thats 3 in a row killer kigs. I FUCKING LOVE NEW YORK. DJ Shadow Holy shit what an impressive show. He was in this fucking sphere thing and there were visualizations all over the place. For those that have been, it was in Irving Plaza in NYC, which is by no means a huge place. The fucking place was smokier (weed smoke) than any show I have EVER been to including the 4 gigs Ive seen in Amsterdam, there was just no comparison. People were passing shit around and it was a total lovefest. This Japanese girl I was standing next to (soooooo cute) had arguably the biggest blunt Ive ever seen in a girls hand and she handed it to me with about 3/4 of it left, and when I went to pass it to her, she shook her head no and just started swaying and dancing to the music. I think I fell a little in love w/ her. I smoked about a part of it and then she looked at me and moved her head as if to say, pass it on, so I passed it to this black girl who was on the other side of me. I went with my buddy Rob who I lost about 2 songs into Shadow's set, only to find him outside the venue when the gig was over sitting against the wall Musically the mix was solid. A lot of stuff from Shadow's remix project was woven into his well known cuts and he spun some CRAZY new shit that is on-par with Endtroducing, shit you fucking not. An absolutely immense experience. 10 out of fucking 10. There was something otherwordly about this gig. heres the sphere Shadow was in.... I had tickets for tomorrow's nights show in Brooklyn, but I met this cat from Atlanta that had driven up for tonight and sold them to him for face value cash for 1 ticket and a 20 sack (I dont have a hookup yet) for the other I think one night of that is enough since theres no chance he's changing the set tomorrow.

LCD Soundsystem/Hot Chip at Manchester Apollo
Was a co headlining show and they've alternated headliner slots on this tour and this time Hot Chip were headlining.
LCD - fucking brilliant. Only played 12 songs but fuck me they were amazing. Started off with Get Innocuous which was so, so loud, in fact the sound all night was absolutely top notch. All My Friends was really special, Dance Yrself Clean was massive and Movement sounds so much better live than on record. Can't believe they're quitting touring. 9.5/10
Hot Chip - have to say although they're a pretty damn good live outfit they were a bit of a let down after LCD. They just don't have as strong songs as LCD, though One Life Stand and Over and Over were really good. 6.5/10

Coral @ royal albert hall. Was pretty fucking disappointing tbh. They did practically all the new record which got fuck all response from the crowd, their biggest TCOTU gig ever (of course was no where near sold out) but to give it all new songs in the first half pretty much was a huge mistake. Just felt flat and uninspiring, a shadow of the band I see with Bill Ryder Jones a few years back on the tour for the last LP. If you are gonna play to a big crowd you've got to get the fucking hits out. Won the tickets so can't complain, was meant to be up in the heavens but where it wasn't sold out they gave us our own box which was pretty sweet. Anyway Coral 5, Ian McCulloch 7

goign to see Black Mountain and The Black ANgels on Friday. Concert of the yr This is the gig Im most disappointed about missing. Had I gotten here the week I originally planned, I was going to go see them with Themis. Ah well, they'll be through again. I hope the Angels get their own headlining tour soon. It was. Holy shit. Im still remembering some of the breaks he laid down and am hoping he releases a live mix from this tour. He's so ridiculously talented. And Karl, that is so fucking disappointing. Few bands are held in the same regard as The Coral for me and I dont like hearing that about bands I like that much.

I'm really surprised everybody is raving about the new Black Angels record, heard it plenty of times now & it's no way better than decent at best. A million miles in terms of quality away from the debut. Also, Black Mountain are completely shit

I much prefer Passover. The thing about the new one is its very accessible for people who dont normally like that music. And I dont care for Black Mountain one bit. I would've left if the Angels went on first.

I think thats my problem with the new one, they are taking on a sound thats been done to death & IMO have not come up with the tunes to make it worthwhile for me. Whilst Passover is hardly original I felt they had their own sound & was doing their own thing compared to the obvious bands you'd compare them with.
One day I might get into DJ Shadow

I've seen a few different bands this past week and the conclusion I got from all of them is this: The audience/crowd is probably the most important thing in a show. It changes everything. Nov 11th. Paul McCartney. The gig was pretty good actually. Macca was in good form. Band was solid. Good setlist. But the crowd killed it. About 40k people who just couldn't be arsed. Most were probably there to be seen, or just to be able to say that they got to see McCartney. Songs like Band on the Run, Helter Skelter or A Day in The Life had virtually no response from the crowd. I had people chatting behind me during Blackbird...super annoying. 6.5/10-------------- Nov 20th. Massive Attack, Stereophonics (some Festival wannabe)
Stereophonics played for like 40 minutes. I was there for Massive Attack, but i was looking forward to hear a couple of old songs like Local Boy in the Photograph. Which they did...along with A Thounsand Trees and Bartender and the Thief. The rest were pretty shitty, but whatever. There weren't many people. There was things bullshit thing "Golden Circle" in front of the stage, which was double the price, and it was pretty much empty, so the real crowd was way back. I had a stupid girl who didn't even know most of the songs screaming like fucking crazy just behind me, to the point that my right ear really hurt. 5/10Massive Attack was short but solid. Sounded amazing. The crowd was really into it and chilled. The only good thing about the "festival". 8.5/10 Nov 21st and 22nd. Pavement. They played in this small venue for no more than 600 people each night. The first night was up there with the best gigs of my life. Lovely setlist. The band looked like they were really enjoying it, and the crowd was awesome throughout the entire set. Second night was excellent too, but not as good as the first. 10/10a clip from the first night. You can see the top of my head, although I won't even bother explaining which one

I seriously dig the vibe of that record, an album I can enjoy from start to end with no downs, a solid 8/10. I've never heard anything of their previous efforts though.

Arcade Fire. 8,5/10, it was pretty much perfect but they kinda ruined Tunnels which is one of my favs, so there. And Sarah Neufeld is sexy.

Almight Wire record release, yesterday,
its some sort of sampler of berlin based dark wave bands, about 5 of them played, all of them absolutely horrible, so bad that me and my mate stole lots of equipment afterwards (a really good mic and some guitar effect pedal most notably). for the sake of humanity!
2/10 cause the mic comes in handy in our rehearsal room.
The drums, last sunday,
i've to admit I quite like them, I had AAA so could drink for free all night long, they sounded a bit more dramatic and darker now than when I had seen them earlier the year.
7.5/10
